U.12 Football Lucan Sarsfields 3 GAA

Date & Time: 02.03.2019 @  11.00 am

Venue: St. Catherine's Park

Opposition: Templeogue Synge Street GAA.

Competition: U.12 Football E Blitz, Group 1 ( Round 3).

Final Score: Lucan Sarsfields: 5-06 (2-04), Templeogue Synge Street: 4-06 (1-04).

Templeogue Synge Street (TSS) were the opponents for this third round of matches. There was a great turnout of Lucan footballers at St. Catherines Park on a blustery morning.  So good was the attendance that all 21 team jerseys are destined for the laundry.  It is good to see such eagerness. From the throw-in the Lucan boys were on the attack, pinning their opponents back. Currently in training the u12s are concentrating on the tackle and a fine example of this occurred when Lucas Enright blocked down his opponents attempted clearance. As quick as a flash Adam Norman was on to the breaking ball slotting it into the back of the net. The Lucan forwards continued to exert pressure on the clearing defenders and in the process won back the ball in dangerous positions. One of the standout scores was when Adam McMahon striped the ball from his midfield opponent and drove straight at the TSS defence. At the right moment Charlie McGinn arrived on McMahon's shoulder and they worked the  ball with fast hands into Lucas Enright's path who dispatched the ball to the back of the net. TSS came more into the match at the latter part of the half keeping our backs busy and they only trailed by single score at the interval. The second half started off in a similar manner Lucan scored a couple of scores but then TSS clawed their way back. With difficulty Lucan kept the TSS lads at arms length on the scoreboard. Both teams kept fighting to the end and at the end Lucan prevailed by one score. In those last few minutes the backs kept their discipline and kept the frees down while the forwards kept chipping away. In goals Evan Whelan was very steady and he was ably swapped with Callum Mitchell who was well able to clear his lines. The backs were tenacious and disciplined  with Luke Martin, Eoghan Clarke, Eric Delaney, Luis Healy, Ciaran Moloney, Kevin Doherty, Peter Devlin, Alexander Bollard, Luke Kehoe (1st half) and Ronan O'Flaherty all very strong.  Ronan O' Flaherty was solid in the backs scoring a good point on one of his foreys up the field. In midfield Robert Melvin was very busy, chipping in with a nice point in the first half, along with Adam McMahon. The forward line of Adam Norman, Lucas Enright, Liam Mitchel, Riain Keegan, Charlie McGinn, Darragh Walsh, with Luke Kehoe who scored a nice goal on his rare time in the forwards, was effective with the scores spread out among them . Well done to the players from both sides for playing a fair and exciting game of football and congratulations to the Lucan lads for their first win of this campaign. Thank you to all the parents for their support.

In the U-12 Football C Blitz Gp.2, Lucan lost out to a strong Croabh Chiarain on a score line of 5-10 to 4-03. It was a good battling performance by these boys though as they continue to improve each week.

In the U12 Football A Blitz Gp.1 game played in blustery conditions in St. Annes Park, Lucan won out against Raheny on a score line of 5-12 to 4-01.

Some of the boys who arrived early in St. Annes Park got some words of inspiration from Dublin senior Jack McCaffrey which was great to see. This seemed to have the desired effect as Lucan started strongly against a strong wind winning a lot of primary possession around the middle through Killian Costello and Daniel Taffe. Scores were hard to come by though as the ball had to be worked very close to the goal for a score to be attempted. That being said, Lucan scored some nice points and a couple of great goals through Oscar Brennan, Jack Mills and Cian Gavin. There was also some nice points from Patrick O’Connor and Daniel Taffe. A couple of break away goals for Raheny kept the scoreline close at the end of the first half. There was also some good defending by Mark Byrne, James Dunne and the rest of the Lucan defence. Evan Flynn in the Lucan goal also made a great save in this half. Lucan then had the wind in the second half and pushed forward. Further scores from James Dunne, Michael O’Brien, Conor Healy and a penalty goal from Jack Mills made the game safe but Raheny kept fighting to the end. A good performance from the Lucan boys who now look forward to their next game in two weeks time. A big thanks to all the parents who helped out at the match.

Lucan Squad: Evan Flynn, Dylan Horan, Alex Leonard, Cian Gavin, Daniel Taffe, Patrick O’Connor, Conor Healy, Karl Quinn, Mark Byrne, Jack Mills, Calum Reilly, James Dunne, Gavin Lynch, Cian McCormick, Oscar Brennan, Killian Costello, Michael O’Brien

Lucan Scorers: Daniel Taffe 0-04, Patrick O’Connor 0-02, Oscar Brennan 2-01, Killian Costello 0-01, Jack Mills 2-00, Cian Gavin 1-00, James Dunne 0-01, Conor Healy 0-02, Michael O’Brien 0-01.

Well done to all the teams competing at the weekend.

Horrendous conditions today. Rain and sleet. Girls were level at half time against Brigids but lost after working hard. Hard day at the office for first league game.

U14B Challenge, Sunday 3rd March
Lucan Sarsfields v Ballyboden St Endas, AWP

U14B played a friendly against BBSE in Arctic conditions. Well earned win for Lucan Sarsfields.

SATURDAY MARCH 2

Ladies U18/Minor Division 5, Saturday 2nd March, 2019
Templeogue Synge St 6:05 v 4:07 Lucan Sarsfields, Bushy Park

A historic day for Lucan Sarsfields, as it is the first time in the clubs history to have two competitive Minor Ladies Football teams in the same season.

The weather didn’t bode well for football today, as a strong wind and a rain sodden pitch made conditions difficult, but the Lucan girls were in fine spirits as they faced their first match of the season. Templeogue were only able to field 12 players at the start of play so our team selection had to be amended at short notice, leaving five Lucan subs standing on the sideline in the rain. Sarsfields played with the wind but to no real advantage as our hosts played some good football against facing the breeze. Scores cancelled each other out in the first half and it was a very close game in horrible conditions, injuries to two in Lucan players in the first half didn’t help matters and allowed our hosts to lead at the break. With an extra player arriving for Templeogue the second half started with 13 players each making for a more even game on a pitch more suitable for 15 a side, Templeogue were spirited with the wind at their backs and were helped with the aid of a penalty. The Lucan girls never dropped their heads even though they were chasing the game and improved on the 1st half clawing back the difference in points. Unfortunately the whistle blew for full time with the final score 6:5 to 4:7 in favour of the hosts. Even though the result wasn’t in our favour today, the commitment and attitude of all the girls will pay dividends in June.

U13 League Division 2, Saturday 2nd March
Lucan Sarsfields 7-07 v 0-09 St Vincents,

The final score masks the true nature of the match. If you compare the 14 scores we got to their 9 if gives a truer indication of how evenly matched both teams were. When Lucan passed accurately up the pitch, worked together and supported each other on the way, we clocked up our scores. When we randomly passed, Vincent’s didn’t fail to take their opportunities. We were delighted with the individual performances of the girls and with their overall work rate as a team. We appointed our first rolling Captain and she gave inspiring feedback. Each girl will get a chance to be Captain on a day to develop her leadership skills. Overall, a very good start to our season.

U12 LF Grading Games, Saturday 2nd March
Lucan Sarsfields v Clontarf, AGP1 and AGP0

The U12 LF squad was out today for their 1st grading games. We fielded 3 teams against Clontarf. The girls not only had to battle good oppposition but had rain and gale force winds thrown into the mix. As always they rose admirably to the challenge and won 2 out of 3 games. Brilliant start to an exciting year ahead.

U10 Go Games, Saturday 2nd March
Cuala v Lucan Sarsfields, Meadowvale

In a wet and windy Cuala our girls performed really well. Tacking was good and a lot of great team play. The girls showed some great team spirit which we are actively encouraging and it showed in the great performances shown in the matches.

Thanks.
Shane and Tom.

Adult Hurling Report

Both minor teams were in action in the second round of the league. Minor A's had a good win away to Oliver Plunketts, while the Minor B's drew at home to Ballyboden. Match reports below.

Next Sunday, our three adult teams have home league games. Times and venues to be confirmed during the week. Details will be on website or on Twitter @lucanadulthurlin

MHL 1: Oliver Plunketts 0-10. Lucan Sarsfields 2-14.
Lucan's second league game was away to an unknown Plunketts side in Sunday morning conditions that would not be suited to hurling!
Plunketts were off the mark first to go a point up before lucan began settling into the game and conditions. While their shooting was wayward at times, the work rate of the Lucan forwards was very effective in not letting the Plunketts backs get time to deliver good ball up front. Lucan were doing just enough to keep the opposition at arms length and went in at half time 5 points up, 0-11 to 0-6.

Second half started well for Lucan, scoring 1-1 before Plunketts got on the scoreboard. While the rain got heavier, conditions got worse and the hurling got tougher! The Lucan backs stood tall and some old school hurling from the full back line was a joy to watch as the opposition tried unsuccessfully to raise the green flag. 20 players got game time for Lucan and at no stage was the team weakened, which shows This is the strength of this panel.

Lucan Panel: Luke Finnerty, Fintan Ward, Cian Duffy, Philip Kane, Dylan Kelly, Mark Lavin (0-1), Daragh Reid, Colm Walsh (0-1), Alex Hanley, Charlie Keher (0-2), Colm Behan (0-1), Evan Dowling (0-1), Alan Lynch (1-0), Matt Dunne (0-8), Oisin Ryan, Cian Canavan, Daire Murphy,Mark Gormley, Jack McCarthy, Ben O Toole, Fionnan Breen (1-0).

MHL 4: Lucan Sarsfields 2-9 Ballyboden 3-6.

Lucan Minor Bs kept their unbeaten start to Div 4 South intact at home to Ballyboden. This was a wet but calm morning and Boden opened the scoring with an early point. Lucan soon settled into a good rhythm and scored five unanswered points with Liam O'Connor converting two frees and Cathal Shanahan, Matthew Coogan and Charlie Casely all finding the mark. There were also a number of shots on target but the Boden keeper dealt confidently with these. Boden got back into the game with a free and then two goals in quick succession changed the complexion of the game. Shanahan got a point back to steady the ship on 20 minutes before Boden put another point over. Lucan got a fortuitous goal before the break when a 65' from O'Connor went straight to the net to leave the game tied.

Lucan dominated the third quarter with two more points from O'Connor coming either side of a Shanahan goal. Boden started to find their range and despite hitting a few wides they got the scoreboard moving with ten minutes to go. They added 1-3 with Lucan struggling to keep the ball up the field and moved into the lead. The last scoring act was an impressive 65 in the wet from O'Connor to tie up the game.

Lucan Team: J Mooney; N Murray, C O'Brien, S Egan; L Power, Rob Moloney, P Farrell; C Shanahan (1-2), C Casely (0-1); O Twamley, L O'Connor (1-5: 1-1 65, 0-3f), M Coogan (0-1); S O'Leary, D Coogan, M Daly; C Sharkey, A Smith, M Connolly, P O'Leary.
