U12 Division 2 Champions

Sat 31st of October was far from a fright night for the U12 A Hurlers , as they entered the last round of league matches with their destiny in their own hands. A win over Nh Barrog, would secure the Division 2 title and promotion for the 2016 season. On what was close to a summers morning in terms of the temperatures , a red hot start by the Lucan from the throw-in , where Sean Harkness and Brendan Kavanagh took early control, led to us taking an early lead through a great goal from Matthew Coogan , this goal was coupled with points from the Adams ( Whyte and Gilmore) and Hugh Cuffe chipping in with his usual tally of frees and points from play. The tireless Cathal Britton broke the hearts of the Barrog defense with his ceaseless running and harrying.  At half time , Lucan had score 1-10 coupled with some dogged and determined defensive play , with Michael Young and man of the match Aidan Sheary to the fore , ably assisted by Cian Canavan , Cillian Morrisey, Neil O’Leary and James Finn– had restricted Nh Barrog to 0-2 even with the wind!

Half time saw the introduction of Louis Butler on his return from injury for Britton , with Canavan moving to Full Forward , with Gilmore taking over in goal… a versatile group of players.  With the finish line in sight , Lucan started nervously in the second half and gave away some needless scores to the every improving Barrog side. Lucan eventually settled through a long range point from Neil O’Leary after being well found by Sean Harkness. This score settled Lucan , who eventually added to this score through a point from Louis Butler , a well taken goal from Hugh Cuffe after a lovely knock down by Cian Canavan , with the scoring rounded off by a pointed free by Cuffe. The concession of a late consolation goal for Nh Barrog , didn’t dampen the spirits as the team closed out the game through excellent midfield and defensive play – winning on a score line of 2-13 to 1-6.

The final whistle was met with respectful handshakes with the opposition , followed by a more boisterous rendition of “Champione” plus obligatory water fight . The team then returned to the club house with the other two Lucan U12 teams for celebrations , where the previous feats were matched in kind with the prodigious eating of pizza etc. Well done lads on your win and promotion …roll on 2016 and Division 1.
