Minor Camogie Championship

Lucan B 4-12 v Na Fianna 1-3

Each year the commencement of the minor camogie championships signals the approach of the festive season.  After the autumn adult and juvenile camogie championships the Lucan Camogie Christmas tree is short on silverware this year. However, both Minor A and Minor B teams took full points from their first round robin games and there is still hope that the 2014 Camogie Christmas Tree will sparkle!

The Minor B is a new panel and comprises of players from the U15’s, U16’s and eligible minor players. There is little time to get the girls gelling together so the common bond of the green and white jersey plays a bit part in binding the team.  The wet weather is playing havoc with the fixture list and the competition is already behind schedule.  The Lucan Minor B team were forced to play on the all-weather on Sunday and recorded a good win against Na Fianna B.  Aoife McKearney had 4 points on the board for Lucan before Na Fianna hit the target.  Two points from Eimear Hayes and one from Dearbhla Hopper pushed Lucan further ahead before Na Fianna found the net. Aoife Greene and Julie Kelly continued to threaten the Na Fianna net as the first half continued to be a tight affair.  Na Fianna battled hard but were frustrated many times by keeper Nicole Fitzgibbon. Jenny Kavanagh, Aine Keher and Alanna Porter battled hard to defend wave after wave of attack from a spirited and skilful Na Fianna side.  Top scorer Aoife McKearny struck with a goal and a point to stretch Lucan into a 1-8 to 1-2 at the break.

Lucan took control in the second half and pressure from Laura Morgan and Dayna Barry eventually led to goals from Fiona Dowler, Kate Britton and Hollie Garrigan and points from Grainne Eley and Katie Feeney. Avril Quinn and Niamh O’Connor both impressed in the half- back line as Lucan pushed clear to capture a precious two points.

A further positive for the Minor B squad was the return to training of Claire Leonard who had been out injured since mid-July.
