Lucan Sarsfield’s Club Notes

Social

We have recently started a welcome garden at the entrance to the club and want to make this a community garden.  We need to keep it tidy so we ask anybody passing to please pick any weeds. If you have flowers or plants that you would like to add please do. And if you are coming up on a hot summer day, bring a watering can or big bottle and fill from the tap outside the dressing room.  It only takes 5 minutes but could save a withering plant. Thank you to Mikey Hanley and everyone else involved with his great initiative.

Our Annual Golf Classic will take place on the 21st of June 2024 in Lucan Golf Club. The cost of a four-person team is €450. This event books up quickly and we had an unprecedented demand for tee times last year so make sure to register early. Invitations are also open for sponsorship opportunities for both companies and personal support. Please contact any member of our committee for registration, sponsorship enquiries and any other information. Maggie Mulqueen 087 2866581, Sara Hickey 086 8187070, Ruth Langton 086 8231139. A huge thank you to Colm Corrigan Builders for sponsoring this event. Hurling

A good weekend for our adult hurlers with league wins for seniors (v Na Fianna), Intermediates (v Oliver Plunkett's) and Junior As (v Fingallians), and all three remain in contention in their respective divisions. Our Junior Bs and Cs are in action on Monday evening.

This is a big week for Dublin hurling with U20s and Minors playing Leinster finals on Wednesday evening and Saturday respectively, and Seniors playing key final group stage match in Galway next Sunday.  Best of luck to the three teams and particularly to all the Lucan lads involved.

AHL4:   Lucan Sarsfields 2-19 vs OPER 1-11

Saturday 18/5/24, 12th Lock.

This was not a thrilling encounter under the blazing sun at The Lock, although Lucan showcased their dominance early, it slipped away allowing OPER conclude the first half with a flurry of scores to finish only 3 behind at half time.  The match had an air of mythological struggle, it was reminiscent of Prometheus’s eternal torment, we had the fire but also the torment. Again, we are lucky to have a strong panel allowing changes that can impact a game and with the introduction of Darragh Meehan delivering 3 points from play and Brendan Kavanagh returning 1 also, as Lucan gathered and finished the stronger.

Lucan Team and Scorers:  Cathal Doody, Alex Hickey, Michael Cunningham, Eoin Seery, Gavin Milea, Luke Murphy, Anthony McNulty, Mark Gormley, Paddy Ryan (1-2), David Kavanagh (0-1), Ruairi Gleeson (1-3), Colm Keenan (0-1), Joey Dunne (0-3, 3f), Kaygan Cooney (0-1), Evin Dowling (0-4). Subs; Paul Claffey, Darragh Meehan (0-3), Brendan Kavanagh (0-1), Mathew Dunne, Jack McCarthy, Rory Stapleton, Philip Smith, Craig Moore.

AHL6: Lucan Sarsfields 1-21  Fingallians 1-10.

Sunday 19/5/24. 12th Lock.

A sun-drenched Sunday morning at the 12th Lock saw a comfortable win in the end for our Junior A team.  Lucan had only a point to spare at half time when they led 0-11 to 1-7. They had been the better team but the concession of a soft goal and a failure to convert chances left the game closer than it should have been. However, Lucan put that right in the second half with a dominant display to win by 11 points in the end. Peter Kelly marked his return to action with a cracking second half goal while Ciarán Keane scored 10 points including 7 from play in and outstanding display of finishing.

Lucan team/scorers: K Roche, J Doyle, J Byrne, D Walsh, M May (0-1), A Byrne, C Duffy, C Ó Maolmhána , P Fagan, A Roche (0-1), E Lombard (0-2), C Keane (0-10, 0-3f), J Mooney (0-1), P Brennan (0-3), M Young (0-1). Subs introduced: C Canavan, P Kelly (1-0), E Conheady (0-1), A O’Neill (0-1), K Boylan.

The Lucan Junior B hurlers maintained their recent good form with two further wins in their most recent league fixtures.

AHL9: Na Fianna 0-13, Lucan 1-17.

Last Thursday they travelled to play Na Fianna and came away with a hard fought 7-point victory. A goal mid-way through the first half scored by Neil O'Leary was crucial with points from Adam Duffy, Adam Whyte and Kevin Gormley giving us a 5-point cushion at half time. We were under pressure from the home team in the second half but poor shooting by them allowed us to add to our lead which was seven by the end. A great display in goals by young Freddy Hearn and resolute defending by Tiernan Swords Alan Flanagan kept the home side at bay. Others to impress were Cian Ryan, Conor Mulqueen and Ross Campion. Unfortunately, Pierce Farrell suffered a serious arm injury in the closing stages of the match which will keep him out of action for a while and we wish Pierce well in his recovery.

AHL 9: Lucan 3-12, St. Annes 1-11.

We were back home for our second match of the weekend where we enjoyed a comfortable win over St. Annes. Aided by the fresh breeze, we took control of this game from the start when we opened an early lead thanks to goals from Cian Ryan and Neil O'Leary and the accurate free taking of Adam Duffy. Adam Whyte and Kevin Gormley were also on the scoreboard. We enjoyed a 2-8 to 0-3 lead at the break. The visitors upped the intensity after the break and added a few minor scores but a further goal from Neil and points from Kevin Gormley, Adam Duffy and Conor Sheary sealed a good win. There were outstanding displays at the back from Freddy Henan in goals, Conor Mulqueen on the Joe McSweeney and Kian Quinn on the half back line. Cian Ryan and Liam Farrell put in a good hour's work in midfield.

With just one defeat so far and four league games left we are pushing hard for one of two promotion spots.

Lucan squad: F.Heran, P. Farrell, T.Swords, A. Flanagan, D. Ryan, J.McSweeneyK, Quinn. K. Gormley, D. Quinn, C. Mulqueen, C. Ryan, L.Farrell, A. Duffy, A. Whyte, R. Campion, N. Higgins, DB. Murphy, E. Kilduff, C. Sheery, N.O'Leary,  S.Teehan.
