Hurling

It was a busy week for our adult hurlers with a double round of fixtures for all our six teams. Playing resources were stretched to the limit but we managed to field for all games thanks to good cooperation between mentors. Of the 12 games played we had 7 wins and 5 losses. There was a notable double success for the Junior C South team.  Our seniors, Inters, Junior As and Junior Bs all recorded their first loss of the year, though each had a win as well this week. Our Junior C North team recorded their first win of the league with a great performance away to Wild Geese.  See selection of match reports below- thanks to Andy Hickey for his comprehensive accounts of the Intermediate games.

AHL 1 Oliver Plunkett's ER 2-17 Lucan Sarsfields 0-20.

Martin Savage Park, 1/5/24.

Out seniors suffered their first loss of the season going down by 3 points to the hosts at Martin Savage Park. Lucan started well and got the first 6 scores of the game and looked to be in early control. However, the concession of 2 goals left Plunkett's back into it and Lucan led by just 3 at halftime, 0-14 to 2-5, having dominated for most of the half. Lucan got the first 3 points of the second half to open a 6-point lead for the second time, but thereafter it was all Plunkett's as Lucan seemed to run out of steam very quickly and had very little in response to the home team's resurgence. Plunkett's win by a comfortable 3 points in the end.

Lucan Team/scorers:  S McClelland, E O’Connor, P Rigney, S Langton (0-1), M McCaffrey (0-1), C Stritch, L Walsh, K Fitzgerald, R Ward, D Lyons, B Coffey (0-1), M Coogan (0-2), C Dowling (0-4), S Harkness (0-8, 0-7f), C Keher (0-2). Subs C McHugh, R Clancy (0-1), H Cuffe.

AHL4. Lucan Sarsfields 3-19  Clanna Gael Fontenoy 1-10.

12th Lock. 1/5/24.

It was mid-week madness once again for these two teams this year, with Lucan anticipating an evenly contested match for the spoils at 12th Lock. The Lucan panel, though strong, was untested, prompting a host of changes introduced by the management, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown. Despite initial struggles with accuracy (unlike this seasons match reports), Lucan found their rhythm with points from Joey Dunne and Conor Hylands (Haggis). Bren Cavanagh’s goal attempt was saved, but he quickly redeemed himself with a point. Colm Keenan (Colsey) and Joey continued to lead the charge, giving Lucan a comfortable lead of 1-9 to Gaels' 0-4 at halftime.

In the second half, Lucan maintained their momentum, with standout performances from Daire Meehan and Evan Dowling, who showcased their talent with a goal each. Despite the Gaels' efforts, Lucan's defence held strong, allowing only sporadic scores. Rory Gleeson and Colsey kept the pressure on, ensuring Lucan's dominance throughout the match. Despite a late surge from the Gaels, Lucan emerged victorious with a final score of 3-19 to 1-10, securing a well-deserved win, great to have Matt Dunne back after a long spell from injury. The writer of this report takes no responsibility for its accuracy, congrats to those who got scores in the lucky dip.

Team and scorers: Cathal Doody, Alex Hickey, Michael Cunningham, Eoin Seery, James Finn, Luke Murphy, Anthony McNulty, Mark Gormley, Paddy Ryan, Conor Hylands (0-1), Ruairi Gleeson (0-2), Colm Keenan (0-6, 1f), Daire Meehan (1-1), Joey Dunne (1-5, 2f), Brendan Kavanagh (0-2). Subs Kaygan Cooney, David Kavanagh, Evan Dowling (1-1), Mathew Dunne, Jack McCarthy.

AHL4: Good Counsel 2-20. Lucan Sarsfields 1-20.

Galtymore Road, 4/5/24.

The clash between AHL4 rivals, Good Counsel and Lucan, showcased an intense battle from start to finish. Good Counsel asserted their dominance early on, capitalizing on Lucan's errors and securing a series of points and goals. Lucan, however, fought back with determination, led by the sharpshooting of Joey Dunne.

In the first half, Good Counsel’s precision in front of goal earned them a slight advantage, with Lucan's Dunne keeping his side in contention with accurate free-taking and crucial points from play. Both teams displayed moments of brilliance, but it was Good Counsel who held the upper hand at halftime, leading 2-6(12) to Lucan's 0-9(9).

The second half saw Lucan mounting a fierce comeback, with Dunne once again leading the charge with his impeccable accuracy. However, Good Counsel remained resilient, responding with crucial scores of their own to maintain their lead. The game reached its climax as both teams traded blows until the final whistle.

In the end, it was Good Counsel who emerged victorious, edging out Lucan with a final scoreline of Lucan 1-20(23) to Good Counsel 2-20(26). A thrilling encounter that showcased the competitive spirit and skill of both teams.

Lucan Team and scorers: Cathal Doody, Alex Hickey, Anthony McNulty, Eoin Seery, David Kavanagh, James Finn, Gavin Millea, Mark Gormley, Paddy Ryan, Darragh Meehan (0-2), Ruairi Gleeson (1-3), Colm Keenan (0-1), Joey Dunne (0-11, 10f/pen), Kaygan Cooney (0-2), Brendan Kavanagh. Subs Evan Dowling (0-1), Mathew Dunne, Jack McCarthy, Alan Murphy.

The Junior B hurlers enjoyed mixed fortunes with their two most recent league fixtures.

Cuala 2-8, Lucan 2-14,

We travelled to play Cuala away last Thursday and came away with a 6-point win. Both teams were unbeaten going into this game and the early exchanges suggested that Cuala had a bit more to offer. However, after a few early setbacks when goals were conceded Lucan stuck to their task and fought their way back into the game. A smashing finish from Niall Higgins and a somewhat fortuitous goal from a free from Adam Duffy had Lucan leading by two points at the break. Others to contribute to the scoring were Dan Barry Murphy, Adam Whyte and Kevin Gormley.  Resolute defending from Kian Quinn, Joey McSweeney and Tiernan Swords played a big part. Lucan took a firm hold of the match after the resumption, but it took some brave interventions from young goalie Freddy Heran to keep our goal intake. We continued to tack on our points and in the end ran out comfortable winners on an 8-point margin.

Lucan 1-9, Parnell's 3-10.

We lost our unbeaten run at the 12th Lock on Sunday afternoon. A below par display against the only other unbeaten team in the league made for a frustrating afternoon. We were always chasing this game. Having conceded an early goal, we could not get to grips with the match, poor shooting, poor decision making and bad luck in front of goal had us trailing by 5 points at the break.  An early score on the resumption was quickly followed by another setback when an over fussy referee awarded the visitor a penalty which was duly converted.  Lucan was offered a lifeline with a penalty of our own, but we failed to convert the chance.  An improved second half performance was rewarded with a goal to leave just four points between the sides, but we could not get the vital breakthrough and the visitors rounded off the scoring for a seven-point win. Alan Flanagan was solid at full back and Conor Mulqueen impressed in the half back line. Liam Farrell and Kevin Gormley worked hard against a skilful visitor's midfield. It was a tough afternoon for the forwards where Adam Duffy and Adam Whyte did their best to keep Lucan in the game.

Lucan squad: F.Heran, P. Farrell, T.Swords, A. Flanagan, D. Ryan, J.McSweeney, K. Quinn. K. Gormley, D. Quinn, C. Mulqueen, C. Ryan, L.Farrell, A. Duffy, A. Whyte, R. Campion, N. Higgins, DB. Murphy, E. Kilduff, C. Sheery, N.O'Leary, S.Teehan.
