 5 Former Chairpersons where seen reminiscing following the club mass!

Hurling 

A busy weekend for our young adult hurlers with our two U21 teams and three Minor teams all in action at the business end of championships. There were semi-final wins for our U21As (v Naomh Barrog) and our Minor As (v Vincents) and both advance to play Kilmacud Croes in their respective 'A' Championship finals. Our Minor C hurlers had a good quarter-final win away to Kevins. However, there was disappointment for our U21Bs and Minor Bs who both lost out at the semi-final stage to Ballyboen and Fingallians respectively. Great credit to the Club pitch committee who worked hard to have the 12th Lock pitch playable for the two 'A' semi-finals, despite weeks of bad weather. Match reports below.

U21 A Championship Semi-final: Lucan Sarsfields 3-17 Naomh Barróg 0-15. 18/11/2023, 12th Lock

Lucan Under 21 As advance to the championship final after this comprehensive win over Naomh Barróg. Lucan were the better team from the beginning but some errant shooting in the first half kept it tight on the scoreboard and there was only a point between them at half time, Lucan leading 1-6 to 0-8. That first half goal was expertly finished by Charlie Keher who also added a point in that period. Lucan's other scores came from Sean Harkness (0-4, 0-3f) and Evan Dowling. Lucan played into "the scoring goal" in the second half and were much more efficient in their shooting. A goal from Sean Harkness early in the half established a platform on which they built with a series of points and they were well ahead when Harkess added Lucan's third goal late on. All the starting forwards and both midfielders got on the scoreboard in that half. But it was Lucan's halfback line that provided the basis for their superiority throughout and the full back line ably dealt with whatever threat came their way. Barróg proved dogged and were certainly competitive for most of the game, and it was only in the last 10 minutes that Lucan pulled clear.

U21 D Championship Semi-final: Lucan Sarsfields 0-16 Ballyboden St Endas 3-14 18/11/2023, AGP3 

Lucan played against the breeze in the first half and this was significant. Ballyboden got a fast start and scored 1-1 inside two minutes. Lucan settled reasonably well but were not able to find their range and were 2-3 behind after ten minutes when they finally got on the scoreboard. Ballyboden were the slicker team throughout the first half and added a further eight points before the interval to lead 2-11 to 0-5. Lucan started well on the resumption and inched closer with three converted frees. The wind was probably not as strong as the first half and Ballyboden picked off a few nice scores to maintain the gap on the scoreboard. With ten minutes to go, the visitors got their third goal and although Lucan continued to convert frees, they were unable to create the goal chances required. Most of Lucan’s scores came from Adam Duffy frees with little coming from open play. Lucan had eleven wides to the visitors five and, with a number of balls dropped in on the keeper, did not have the required accuracy in what was a competitive and relatively even contest.

Minor A Championship Semi-final: Lucan Sarsfields 1-13 St Vincents 0-15. 19/11/2023, 12th Lock. 

Lucan Minor As advance to the championship final after a dramatic one point win over St Vincents. Vincents had a penalty chance to win the match with the last puck of the game but Lucan keeper Sean O'Neill brought off a great save and the final whistle blew to the delight of the home supporters. The match was played in difficult conditions with wind and rain adding to the challenge of the already heavy sod. Vincents played with the benefit of the wind in the first half and got the first 3 scores to lead 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Liam Fitzgerald got Lucan's first score and a free from Darragh Lyons made it 0-4 to 0-2 at the mid-point of the half. Vincents added a couple of more and a David Mulqueen point in response left it 0-6 to 0-3 after 20 minutes. Charlie Mulqueen then chipped in with a point before David got a vital goal in the 26th minute to put Lucan ahead for the first time, 1-4 to 0-6. A further pointed free from Darragh Lyons and two responses from Vincents left it level at half time, 1-5 to 0-8. Lucan got the first two points of the second half, and now playing with the benefit of the breeze, it looked like they might pull clear. However, Vincents were very competitive and responded quickly again. It was tit for tat through the half with never more than a point or two between them. Vincents had established a 2 point lead inside the final 10 minutes but a couple of points from Charlie Mulqueen and one from Fitzgerald had it level again as the clock reached 60 minutes. Then followed a dramatic period of added time. A long passage of play saw momentum swing one way and then the other but neither defence was breached. Finally a long ball was blocked out to give Lucan a 65 in the fifth minute of injury time. This looked to be the match winning chance but the referee didn't like Lucan's attempt to introduce a dry ball and decided to throw it in. Lucan managed to get possession again and launched an attack from which sub Senan Bolger managed to score from a tight angle. There was still time for more drama though as Vincents were awarded a penalty but O'Neill's save secured the win for Lucan.

Minor D Championship Quarter Final: Kevins 1-5 Lucan Sarsfields 3-8, 19/11/2023, Dolphins Barn. 

Lucan’s third minor team had to travel for their knockout match against Kevins. The hosts converted an early free against the wind but followed up with two wides before Ryan Donnelly got Lucan off the mark. Shortly afterwards, James Scott took advantage of some open space and fired to the net. Kevins had a few more wides before Scott repeated the trick following another converted Kevins free. The game remained tense with both sides giving their all. At the halfway point, Lucan led 2-2 to 0-2 with seven Kevins wides proving costly. Lucan added three from play courtesy of Shane Dolan and Daragh Kenna in the next ten minutes with further Kevins wides stalling their progress. Kevins converted three frees and their keeper made a pair of saves either side of another Kenna score to keep their side in the contest. Kevins goaled from a penalty rebound after Josh Murphy saved the initial effort with six minutes remaining to leave four between the sides. That was as close as they came though, with Aidan Barry and Dolan adding two from play complimented by a brave Murphy stop from close range. Scott completed his hat-trick at the end to settle the matter. Lucan deserved the victory as their greater accuracy and Scott’s goal scoring made the difference. This was an all-round good performance with Sean McGowan and Ben O’Keeffe dominant in defence and Sean Teehan prominent in winning a lot of ball in the forwards. There was even time to get a photograph with Liam McCarthy after the game!

What an intense encounter this game turned out to be, talk about a game of two half’s, this game epitomised that saying. Lucan started off the first half playing down the hill with a strong cross wind on a pitch that was heavy on the legs and worsened as the game progressed. Most of the play was in the Na Fianna half, with plenty of half chances missed and plenty of play the in the box, being ferociously defended. Finally, the breakthrough came when Kiera Rowan who had to battle hard to win ball on the right wing scored the 1st point. A few minutes later and from almost the same position Kiera scored the game’s 1st goal. Ava O’Brien and Róisín O’Connor followed up with a point each and Lucan went in at half time 1.3. to 0.0. 

When the 2nd half started Na Fianna came out with an all-out attack and forced Lucan to defend for the first 20 minutes despite the efforts of the Lucan midfield Róisín O’Connor and Ruby Walsh and the half back line of Ruby Gregg, Molly Fitzgerald, Rebecca Dunne, and the magnificent Ava O’Brien. The breakthrough for Na Fianna came early in the 2nd half when they scored 2 goals in succession, and now we have an even scoreline and a worried side line. However, the Lucan girls dug in and with a steely determination managed to get a few patterns of play together and moved the ball into the opposition half getting off a few shots resulting in a few wides. In the last five minutes we managed to win a free and Ruby Walsh stepped up and struck it over the bar, 1 up and both side lines are nervously noisy. The last few minutes were played too close to the Lucan full back line, for comfort. Thankfully Eve Harkin, Niamh Breen, Myla Deegan, and goalkeeper Niamh Molloy managed to keep them out and prevented them scoringAs the final whistle blew a huge roar went up from an exhausted team and an equally exhausted sideline. 

In an unexpected surprise Santa visited the club to celebrate with the cup, while Rudolf was left outside trimming the pitch to help PJ who hurt himself playing football.

The Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club 25 Card Drive resumes on Friday 13^th October 2023 and will continue to 10^th May 2024 in the Clubhouse Bar.

Healthy Club 

^{Thank you to everyone who attended our Seniors Sunday Lunch. We had a great fun crowd and they really helped make a good atmosphere and added to the craic! Thanks to Paddy Ryan and the Deadmans Inn for the catering. We were asked to pass on many compliments to the chef! Also to Paul for the lovely singing and great song choices. He had everyone singing along or up dancing. Shane Moynihan has also been a great supporter of healthy clubs and came up to sample the good cheer and donated a hamper for our raffle. Desserts were all homemade by a great bunch of ladies from the club and as usual we had help from the minor girls teams. Thanks especially to Pat and Rebecca who helped set up, serve up and clean up! It was a great way to start off the Christmas season and to get to connect with the community. Lucan Healthy Club is all about promoting wellbeing for everyone.
