Hurling

This was championship semi-final weekend for the higher level adult championships and Lucan were involved on two fronts. Our Junior As had a narrow win over Whitehall to secure a place in the Junior B Championship final, and promotion to the Junior A championship for next year. However, it was a disappointing day for our seniors as they lost out to Na Fianna by 4 points in the senior semi-final in Parnell Park. See match reports below. Meanwhile our Junior Bs and Junior Cs both effectively secured their passage to the knock out stages with wins over Na Fianna and Garda respectively.

Junior B Hurling Championship Semi-final Lucan Sarsfields 1-17 Whitehall Colmcille 2-13. 12th Lock, 15/10/2023.

Lucan Junior As advanced to the championship final with a one point win over Whitehall. Lucan looked comfortable for most of the game but never put the opposition away and a late Whitehall goal made for a more tense finish than it should have been. Lucan had started well and led 1-4 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. The goal came from Mark Gormley who made a great run through the middle and fed Paddy Brennan who’s shot was blocked but Gormley followed through to finish it to the net. However, Lucan hit a flat patch in the second quarter and went almost 15 minutes without scoring. The still had the edge on the scoreboard though leading 1-5 to 0-6 at half time. The game opened up a bit in the third quarter and Lucan added some nice points from Ciaran Keane and Paddy Brennan. However, Whitehall got back into the game when a long range effort found its way to the Lucan net and there was just three points in it after 45 minutes, 1-12 to 1-9. Lucan reasserted again with scores from Aidan Roche and Gareth Kennedy and looked to be comfortable until an injury time goal from Whitehall made for a nervous finish.

Lucan Team/scorers: L Finnerty, J Doyle, K Roche, E Connolly, J Byrne, P Kelly, M Young, C O’Maolmhána, M Gormley (1-1), A Roche (0-2), M May, C Keane (0-10, 0-8f), D Kelly, P Brennan (0-3), G Kennedy (0-1). Subs introduced: S Donohue, E Lombard, T Clandillon, K Boylan.

Senior Hurling Championship Semi-final Na Fianna 0-18 Lucan Sarsfields 0-14. Parnell Park, 15/10/2023.

It was semi-final disappointment once again for our senior hurlers as they came up short against Na Fianna in a sunny Parnell Park. A combination of a slow start and inaccurate shooting was Lucan’s downfall. The lack of a competitive game for 6 weeks was evident as Lucan were slow out of the blocks, and Na Fianna raced into an early lead. Lucan found themselves eight points behind, 0-9 to 0-1 after 15 minutes and had a mountain to climb. However, the gradually got a foothold in the game and had narrowed the gap to 4 by half time, 0-10 to 0-6. The first half scores came from three Sean Harkness frees and scores from play by Colm Walsh, Kevin Fitzgerald and Chris O’Leary. Lucan started the second half well and narrowed the gap to two points but Na Fianna managed to stretch the margin again and it was 0-15 to 0-10 after 45 minutes. A succession of wides (15 in total over the game) proved costly for Lucan who were competitive throughout the field but couldn’t find the finish when needed. Lucan had reduced the gap to three as the game entered injury time but couldn’t manufacture the goal opportunity needed and Na Fianna got the crucial final score to win by 4 in the endThe Lucan defence was very solid throughout and restricted Na Fianna’s goal threat aided by goalkeeper Cillian Murray who made a couple of excellent saves. Luke and Colm Walsh were both prominent in midfield but it was the forward line where Lucan struggled most. So a disappointing end to what was a promising championship campaign for Lucan. Nevertheless, there were a lot of positives in the campaign under a new management team and much to build on for next year.

Lucan team/scorers: C Murray, J Bellew, P Rigney, R Smith, M McCaffrey, J McCaffrey, C Crummey (0-1), L Walsh (0-1), C Walsh (0-1), C O’Leary (0-2, 0-1 sideline), K Fitzgerald (0-1), C Dowling (0-2f), C Keher, P Crummey, S Harkness (0-6, 0-5f). Subs introduced: B Coffey, J Behan, L Garrigan.

Camogie

Senior Camogie capture Division 1 Shield

A busy weekend for adult camogie with the senior team contesting a shield final against Ballinteer. There was very little between these sides when they met earlier in the year in the Leinster league quarter final. The Lucan girls set out their stall early with some well-taken scores and strong tackling. With an impressive display of passing and precise inter-play, the half-time score stood at 4-9 to 0-4. The scoring dominance continued in the second half, with a full-time score of 6-23 to 0-8. Claiming the shield was a good way to round off the season.

Lucan team: Amy Gorman, Lily Rooney, Laura Sharkey, Avril Quinn, Emma Flanagan (Capt), Mairi Moynihan, Anna Breen, Niamh Roche, Milly Hughes (0-1), Aoife Mahon (0-4), Aoife McKearney (0-9), Ellen Dunphy (0-1), Chloe O’Connor (1-2), Laura Quinn (3-3), Sophie McIntyre (1-1), Emma O’Brien, Rebecca Flanagan, Sinead Daly (0-1), Cara Ware (1-0), Millie Reid (0-1), Phoebe Shannon, Michelle Kelly, Mia Farrell

Intermediate Camogie claim Intermediate 2 Championship trophy

The Intermediate team, having gone unbeaten in the group games, came up against a strong N Maur team who also had the same track record. Playing on the perfect surface in NGDC Abbotstown, it was an ideal day for camogie. Both teams got to the pace of the game quickly, Lucan pulling ahead with 2 quick scores, with N Maur responding with 3 points on the trot. The teams traded scores for the first 30 minutes, with N Maur ahead on the slimmest of margins at the short whistle, Lucan 0-5, N Maur 0-6. The second half continued in the same vein, with the teams drawing level on 0-8 apiece, until Hannah Gibbs took her opportunity to run at goal and bury the ball in the back of the net. Two more points for Lucan followed, before N Maur responded with 3 points of their own. The game was settled when Aisling Morrissey won a fast ball, rounded her player and dispatched the ball with a well struck shot to raise another green flag. As the clock ticked down, N Maur surged at the Lucan defence but they held fast to prevent any further scores. The strong Lucan support erupted when the full time whistle sounded, final score Lucan 2-10, N Maur 0-11. The presentation of the cup was made to team captain Sinead O’Toole by Brendan Cooper, Leinster Secretary. To add to the Lucan joy, Sinead was also selected as player of the match.

Lucan team Mia Farrell, Aisling O’Toole, Sinead O’Toole (Capt), Ellie Gaire, Anna Cuffe, Hannah Brady, Leah Dunne, Lucy Fox (0-1), Hannah Gibbs (1-1), Faye Murphy, Clara Finn (0-1), Rachel Boyhan, Rosin Egan, Aoibheann Stokes (0-5), Aisling Morrissey (1-1), Aisling Ni Ruairc, Aisling Behan, Aoibheann Scott, Emma McGivney, Sinead O’Brien (0-1), Shauna Rooney, Chloe Beirne, Sinead Farrell, Cliodhna Ni Bhuachalla, Lorna Sexton

Healthy Club

On Saturday morning at the nursery and at the U9LF training, Colette and Ciara from the Healthy Club committee distributed donor cards for the Irish Kidney Association. Donor cards have been left in the cafe for anyone who would like to pick one up.

Why are more more donors needed?

Because transplantation is now so successful, an increasing number of patients are able to benefit from the procedure. Because of the limited opportunities for organ donation there is a need to ensure that every opportunity is taken so ensuring your family know your wishes is important.

Healthy Club are hosting a Senior Citizens Sunday Lunch on Sunday, 19th November. All enquires for tickets or from anyone who would like to help out or provide entertainment can contact the Healthy Club Committee or Colette @ 086 3799270.
