Hurling

Mixed fortunes for our teams in championship quarter finals this weekend. Our Intermediates lost out to Kilmacud Crokes on Saturday but the Junior As had a good win over Craobh Chiarán on Sunday to progress to the semi-final. Meanwhile the Junior Bs lost to Craobh Chiarán in a group stage encounter, but remain in the hunt to make the quarter-finals.

Intermediate Hurling Championship Q’Final, Kilmacud Crokes 1-20 Lucan Sarsfields 1-14. Silver Park, 30/9/2023.

Lucan bowed out of the Intermediate championship against a more experienced Crokes side. A poor first half performance left Lucan trailing by 8 at half time. An early point from Emmet Allen was Lucan’s only score from play in that half and they relied on Colm Keenan’s accurate free taking for further scores. A scrappy goal conceded at the other end helped Crokes to a 1-10 to 0-5 lead at half time. Lucan started the second half with greater intensity and gradually fought their way back into it. Two well taken points from Rory Stapleton and further frees from Colm Keenan reduced the deficit. A long ball played into the Crokes goalmouth by Colm Keenan found its way to the net with the help of a Crokes defender and Lucan were right back in it. They eventually drew level with about 10 minutes to play. But momentum shifted again as Crokes got the next couple of scores. As the clocked move towards 60 minutes Lucan were chasing a goal while Crokes ticked over points to run out comfortable winners in the end.

Junior B Hurling Championship Q’Final, Lucan Sarsfields 3-17 Craobh Chiarán 0-6. 12th Lock 1/10/2023.

Lucan Junior A’s advanced to the championship semi-final with the comprehensive win over Craobh Chiarán. Craobh got the first two scores but Lucan gradually took control and never relinquished it. Two goals from Paddy Brennan and placed balls from Ciaran Keane helped Lucan to a 2-9 to 0-4 lead at half time. The pattern continued in the second half as Lucan continued to be dominant. Ciaran Keane fired home a third goal as the game lost its intensity and Lucan added a few more points to close out the game.

Lucan team/scorers: L Finnerty, J Byrne, K Roche, E Connolly, M Young (0-1), P Kelly, B McGarry, M Gormley, P Fagan, M May, A Roche (0-3), C Keane (1-10, 0-6f), E Lombard (0-1), P Brennan (2-1), G Kennedy (0-1). Subs introduced D Kelly, J Doyle, C Duffy, A O’Neill, S Donohue.

Junior G Hurling Championship Group 1 Clonshaugh Craobh Chiaran 3-11 Lucan 0-13.

Lucans Junior B hurlers fell to their second defeat away to Craobh in the Junior hurling championship on Sunday but are still on course to reach the knockout stages. Lucan found the swirling breeze had to come to terms with and shot a number of poor wides in the opening exchanges which saw the home side race into a 1-3 lead . Lucan did eventually find their range with points from Ross Campion (2), Cian Ryan, Paddy Kennedy and Eoin Higgins giving us a fighting chance in the second half. Another Craobh goal just before the break gave them a commanding 8 point half-time lead. Tiernan Swords was playing a captain's part at the back ably assisted by Cillian Morrissey, Pierce Farrell and Joey McSweeney. Playing with the aid of the stiff breeze , Lucan started on the front foot with early points from Liam Farrell and Cian Ryan reduced the deficit. However any momentum was quickly killed off when Craobh got in for their third goal. We were out scoring the hosts who had former all star Alan McCrabbe between the posts but we could not find the net. McCrabbe’s skill was a key factor in the game with his long accurate striking and ability to find teammates with his puck outs being key. A harsh second yellow meant we played the last 15 minutes with 14 but we fought valiantly to the end with Ross ending up with a final tally of 0-5. Conor Sheary showed a lot of promise at corner forward in his first outing of the season. A disappointing result but a very spirited performance against one of the teams who are considered favourites for the championship. Last match in group stages in two weeks v Na Fianna where a good result will be crucial to avoid playing the table toppers from the other group in the Q /F.

Team: J.Myler, P.Farrell, T.Swords, J.McSweeney, R.Moloney, J.McCarthy, C.Morrissey, C.Ryan, L. Farrell, R.Campion, P.Kenndey, F.Breen, E.Power, E.Higgins, C.Seery, D.Sheils, D.Coogan.
