Football

Plenty of action last week-end for adult football. Our Seniors had a tense encounter in O’Toole Park against Whitehall Colmcille to avoid relegation from Senior 1 Championship. The match ebbed and flowed for much of the game even when Lucan broke away to the end only to be pulled back in the dying moments to a 2 point victory. Final Score Lucan 1-12 Whitehall Colmcille 1-10. Our Inters didn’t have the same success though as they travelled to Judes for a relegation battle and were well beaten 2-8 to 2-19. The junior A’s hosted Peregrines in AGP to secure their place in the championship for next year match finished 2-13 to 0-10.

We have 2 exciting games to look forward to as our Junior Bs and Junior Cs have made it to the Semis of their championships.

Dublin Ladies Gaelic Football Association - GO-AHEAD INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP A, 7:45pm.

Wednesday 20 September 2023 Rush, Referee, Jason Buckley

St Maurs v Lucan Sarsfields

Before we start, Congratulations to Abby Shiels, winner of the 2023 ZuCar Golden Gloves award while playing in goals for the county.

Before the final round robin game of the group stages, there was a chance of a three way tie at the top, where points differences between the tied teams would be used to decide the group. Ballinteer were hosting O’Dwyers, and a home win would do Lucan a favour, however, as they had failed to win so far in this seasons campaign, this was unlikely.

Our fate had to be decided on the G3 Astro pitch in Rush against St Maurs leading League Division 2, and who had a 100% record in the championship so far, the game due to get underway at 7:45 was delayed by around 5 minutes, due to the late arrival of the referee. Playing with the wind, the home team opened the scoring with a point from play. Sinead Daly pointed from a free shortly after, then a point for Maurs, and from our kickout, Laura Quinn kicked long to Siobhan Birnie, who handpassed to Sophie McIntyre, McIntyre then kicked across the large rectangle for Zara Lawless to bury in the net. The next score came from the home team from a free in the 15thminute, and again from play when our kickout was overturned, and then in a bizarre decision, the referee deemed that Abby Shiels kickout did not travel the requisite distance (subsequent video evidence clearly proves that it did) and awarded a throw up between the two sides on the 20m – quickly followed up by the award of a free to Maurs on the 13m line which they converted, all because Shiels correctly protested her innocence, however, the penalty for questioning the authority of an official is a free against you!! This levelled the sides again, 1-1 to 0-4. Maurs scored twice again from play shortly afterwards, before Birnie pointed from play, but the referee had already blown for a free in to Lucan, so it didn’t count, but Birnie got her score when Lawless sent the ball in from the free! Maurs kept the pressure on, keeping Shiels busy, but with two minutes to the break, Daly found the net again for Lucan. Mairi Moynihan pointed the last score of the half from a free in the third minute of injury time, with the halftime whistle sounding after the fifth and the score showing St Maurs 0-6, Lucan Sarsfields 2-3.

A cold sleety rain fell at halftime making both pitch and ball greasy.

Cliodhna Ni Buachailli replaced Ellen Lyons in midfield at the start of the second half, but one again it was Maurs who opened the scoring with a point from play. From the resulting kickout the ball was delivered to Lawless who was pushed over in the small rectangle and a penalty awarded, which was duly converted by Zara. Then in another bizarre incident, the referee stopped the match for three minutes in order to get the gaps in the goal net repaired. While it is in his remit to ensure the pitch is suitable for play, it would make sense to do this prior to the game taking place, or at half time, if there was a concern. From the restart Quinn popped over a point. Maurs were awarded a penalty when Shiels had no choice but to bring down the Maurs forward, and while she did manage to stop the ball, she could do nothing to stop the follow up. Maurs pointed from play a minute later. Orlaith McKelvey replaced the hard working Aoife Seery, Ada Bowler came on for Siobhan Birnie, and Lucan advanced again, Mairi Moynihan from play made it 1-08 to 3-5 with what turned out to be Lucans last score of the game with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Maurs clawed their way back, to level it 1-11 to 3-5 at the final whistle.

Lucan Team: Abby Shiels, Rebecca Flanagan, Avril Quinn, Emma Fallon, Lily Rooney, Emma O’Brien, Aoife Seery, Laura Quinn, Ellen Lyons, Siobhan Birnie, Emma Flanagan, Sophie McIntyre, Mari Moynihan, Sinead Daly, Zara Lawless.
