Minor Football Division 1 League Winners 2023

The Minor Football team claimed the Division 1 League title on Sunday morning away to Thomas Davis winning on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-15. The match was played in very blustery conditions and Lucan played with wind advantage in the first half. Three goals from Adam Rock, Davy Mulqueen and Paddy Ryan along with some fine long-range points from Cormac Coffey and Daragh Lyons put Lucan in a commanding position at halftime on a scoreline of 3-08 to 0-03. Thomas Davis came strongly into the game in the second-half and with the breeze on their backs picked off a succession of points to close the gap. Pointed frees by Adam Burns combined with periods of good possession steadied things and Lucan eventually ran out winners by six points. Captain Jamie Smith accepted the cup on behalf of the team.

Scorers: Davy Mulqueen 1-03; Paddy Ryan 1-01; Adam Rock 1-01; Adam Burns 0-04; Cormac Coffey 0-02; Daragh Lyons 0-01.

DLGFA Go-Ahead Intermediate Championship Group A

7:30pm. Wednesday 23 August 2023, Bremore Park, Balbriggan - Referee, Finbarr Shanahan O’Dwyers v Lucan Sarsfields

The first round of the 2023 championship was an away game in Balbriggan, O’Dwyers, 2nd in league division 2, their only defeat was to division 2 leaders St Maurs back in April, and who had conceded the league game to Lucan earlier in the month, were the on form team, and probably expected to dominate this fixture. Lucan Sarsfields, on the other hand, have been going through a rough patch in the league, finding themselves one above bottom placed Skerries in the division. This evening, still short of the full squad due to injury and summer hols, we welcomed the return of our two All-Ireland winners, Abby Shiels and Sinead Daly.

O’Dwyers opened the scoring in the first minute with a point and added another two in the following five minutes, before Ellen Lyons kicked long to Lily Rooney who found Mairi Moynihan, settling Lucan nerves with a fine score. The Balbriggan ladies responded with another point, and looked to be well in control until Sophie MacIntyre ripped through a huge gap between the 45 and the 20 and spotted Sinead Daly on her left, who received the ball and buried it in the goal. Two minutes later Daly added a point to put the girls in green up by one. O’Dwyers found the net themselves, but again Lucan brought themselves back level with scores from McIntyre and Daly (free). It was tit-for-tat, score-wise, until the break, with points from Siobhan Birnie and Daly twice from frees; an intriguing contest, in part helped by the referee allowing some physicality and both teams responding in a fair and positive manner. HT Score O’Dwyers 1-8, 1-7 Lucan Sarsfields

As the sun began to fade behind the trees, O’Dwyers started the second half with a brace of points, before Moynihan pointed for Sars. O’Dwyers kept possession from the kickout and worked the ball past Shiels for another goal followed up by a point in the fourth minute. Things looked bleak but our girls kept going. Phoebe Shannon made way for Orlaith McKelvey and with a few positional changes made on-field, Lucan got on the ball again and Birnie pulled on the ground straight past the home goalie. Daly followed up with another a minute later to level it again. Then O’Dwyers pointed from a free and Moynihan levelled it again, 2-12 to 3-9. Whether it was because of the darkening sky from the oncoming evening or not, the ref was missing some fouls made on both sides, put particularly by the O’Dwyers ladies, or perhaps was choosing to ignore them, it seemed all decisions were now going to the home team. Ada Bowler came on for Zara Lawless, Birnie tacked on another point to level again. Lucan went ahead for only the second time with two minutes of normal time remaining, The home team attacked again and Shiels stood tall in goal and while the home supporters were baying for a penalty, the ref awarded a hop ball on the 20m line as neither umpire could agree on what happened. At this stage we expected about 3 minutes of added time as there were only two short stoppages for injuries, O’Dwyers were awarded a free which they duly pointed, so we went into added time all square, and had it finished then, a draw would have been an accurate reflection of the game. It was not to be, though as the referee insisted on playing on in the deepening dusk, and in the sixth minute of overtime a dubious free was awarded to the home team, who went in front by the narrowest of margins. From the restart, Lucan worked the ball quickly forward and Daly went through on goal only to be penalised for overcarrying, despite clearly hopping the ball. In the seventh added minute, the final whistle was sounded, and while a first round defeat is disappointing, it has to be said that this was Sars best performance this season by a mile. Final Score: O’Dwyers 2-16 : 3-12 Lucan Sarsfields

All across the pitch every player worked hard individually and collectively, and we look forward to seeing them in action at home next Wednesday to Ballinteer St Johns. It was a thoroughly entertaining game and was difficult to single out any one player of the match, with strong performances all over, however Mairi Moynihan had an outstanding game and fully deserves the honour. Lucan Sarsfields: Abby Shiels, Rebecca Flanagan, Patricia Gordon, Emma Fallon, Lily Rooney, Avril Quinn, Aoife Seery, Zara Lawless, Ellen Lyons, Sophie McIntyre (0-1), Emma Flanagan, Siobhan Bernie(1-2), Mairi Moynihan (0-2), Sinead Daly (2-7), Phoebe Shannon, Leah O’Byrne, Ada Bowler, Orlaith McKelvey, Caitlin Maguire, Rebecca O’Reilly, Emma O’Brien, Michelle Kelly

Junior All County 2 Championship, Lucan 0-10 v 5-13 N Olaf 13/08/23. 11am 12th Lock.

Ouch…. This has been a slow piece to compose. 2 weeks in the making. It’s only seeing the light of day, because someone suggested that we played badly.

That was not my take on this game. Olaf’s are strong, and we leaked goals. They started like a storm had come to town, and we had brought an umbrella to do our defending. We were turned inside out and needed shelter. Not an umbrella. Down 0-0 v 2-4 after 15 mins.

We finally found our feet and made a match out of the next 2 quarters. Wheels came off at the death with 2 further late goals.

Yes it was a bit of a tonking, but maybe some lessons to be learnt? 1. Defence begins with the guy wearing 15. 2. When your half back line is getting steam rollered, the problems may be originating with their half backs, rather than their half forwards. 3. Sometimes you just have to hold onto the ball a bit tighter. 4. Sometimes it just ain’t your day!

I’m not sure I’d have anyone down for having a bad game. Just a lot of guys that were under pressure. Maybe a less disastrous start; taking a few opportunities; and not giving up soft goals. All of the above would have helped the cause.

Maybe we get our ducks in a row, and we might just get a second chance with Olaf’s.

Shane Kerin, Michael Young, Eoin Farrelly, Cian Gaire, Conor Sheary, James Finn, Tony Mulqueen, Tim Bradley, Peter Carroll, Louis Butler, Aaron Garrigan, Sam Noctor (0-1), Dean Walsh (0-3), Jordan Delmar (0-3), Brendan Kavanagh (0-2) Subs: Declan Lawlor, Colm Kelly, Zach Delmar, Adam Conheady, Liam Garrigan, Gareth Lenehan, Dean Davis

JFC 6 South Lucan Sarsfields 2-16 Brendans 1-8

6 of Lucan’s Junior C south team members put their leaving cert celebrations on hold for this game. A heavy rain downpour just before throw-in couldn’t dampen the underlying buzz. Brendan’s went ahead and after Junior C settled into the wet conditions they went point for point until it was 0-2 each, by which time they began marking man for man, competing for and winning the majority of Brendan’s kickouts followed by scoring opportunities. The Junior C team controlled the game for all the first half and played with confidence even allowing Charlie Caseley to find free space to float into the air to take down balls and push on to score. Ciaran Scully was an absolute workhorse with ball control, pace, and awareness of others around him, he unselfishly set up most of the scoring opportunities for his teammates. As half-time approached Junior C led by 10 points and when the whistle blew management team didn’t even get a chance to speak as the lads knew what they had to do and communicated it colourfully amongst themselves.

A mixture of complacency, team changes, and a black card allowed Brendan’s to get back into the game with a goal and a number of sequential points. Fresh legs were added and a refocus with every man giving it all. A reignited team following Daraigh Quinn’s full-pitch run to score a point was what was needed followed by a goal by Ross Campion that settled the nerves. Ross had an outstanding game, scoring 1-9 and Neil O’Leary’s second goal finished the game with a deserved win for JCS, 2-16 to 1-8.

Special mention to two debut players, Jack Kelly, and Andrew Glynn, this was Andrew's first competitive game since a bad knee injury in early 2022. A quarter-final place is secured for JCS – however, before that St Mary’s in Saggart on Sunday 10th September.

Panel: Ian Brogan, Jack Kelly, Ryan Brant, Daraigh Quinn (0-1), Neil O’Leary (1-0), Ian Crowley, Andy Glynn, Mark Gormley, Ryan Quinn, Adam Duffy, Ross Campion (1-9), Ciaran Scully, Josh Brant (0-1), Kevin O’Reilly (0-1), Charlie Caseley (0-4), Mark Daly, Matthew Ryan, Shaun Keegan, David Donnelly, Finan Breen.

Hurling

Junior G Championship Sunday 20/08/2023

A disappointing day at the office for the JunB hurlers falling to a tough and physical O'Toole team in their third round match in the Jun G championship on Sunday. Having secured wins in their opening two games, and having beaten the same opposition in the league earlier in the summer, hopes were high for a third win. However we failed to get going at all in the game and played second fiddle to our opposition for most of the 60 min. O'Tololes had 1-3 on the scoreboard before we registered our first score which was quickly followed by a fine Liam Farrell goal which kept us in touch. However O'Tooles were more efficient in front of goal and they added further points to keep some daylight between us. A screamer of a goal from Adam Duffy and a late pointed free from Finan Breen gave us hope and saw us going into the break 6 down. We started the second half on the front foot, eventually reducing the deficit to two points, but despite having a number of chances we could not convert them into scores. A further goal and succession of late points saw them run out 8 point winners. Unfortunately we were missing a number of key players due to injury and holidays but even allowing for this it was a disappointing day for all involved.

Lucan: J. Myler, P. Farrell, A.Flanagan, D. Hasset, J.O'Connor, T. Swords, J.McSweeney, L. Farrell(1-0) E. Higgins, D.Quinn, F.Breen,(0-4) C.Casley90-1) E.Power,(0-1) P.Kennedy, A.Duffy (1-1), R.Moloney, L.O'Connor, D.Coogan, D. Murphy.

Camogie

Good start to the Senior Camogie Championship

It was an overcast drizzly morning on Sunday 27th of August when the Lucan Sarsfields Senior camogie team took on St Vincents, the reigning Leinster champions. However, this did not dampen their spirits as they took to the field for a phenomenal performance of pure skill and determination. The score was neck and neck as every player gave it her all and the supporters watched with anticipation to see which team would come out on top. At the short whistle, St Vincents held a slender one point lead with a score of 0-8 to 0-7. The teams continued to trade scores in the second half with Lucan turning the deficit into a two point lead. As the game entered its final moments, St Vincents clawed back to get a well-earned draw. This extremely entertaining game ended in 13 points apiece.

Intermediate Camogie register win in first round

The Intermediate camogie team opened their championship campaign with a win against recently promoted Fingallians. From the first whistle, Lucan set the tempo with some early scores. At half time, Lucan were leading with 1-05 to 0-03. The second half was a closer affair with Fingallians fighting back. However, Lucan would not be denied and ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-08.
