Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

Club News

Dublin GAA County Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Finbarr O'Mahony, St Patrick's Palmerstown, to the role of Dublin GAA CEO/ Rúnaí. We would like to wish Finbarr from our neighbouring club all the best for his tenure as Rúnaí.

This week we sailed difficult seas and some of our players got lost in the fog ending up at the right latitude but the wrong longitude. To all those finished the leaving certificate and travelling away for the first time we wish you a safe trip and remember to look after each other as we do on the pitch and at training each week.

Most leagues have ended or are in the final stages, Camogie 7s has commenced, Ladies football Championship will commence in July as will Hurling Championship with the first match on the 14th July with Lucan Seniors playing Crokes in O’Toole Park.

The format of the Club notes will focus on a feature match each week from each code, with one team nominated to capture the excitement of championship, we will also try to get some player profiles from our players of the match.

Don’t forget that we are updating our website and need content, please send the PRO your panel portraits and any action photos. If you have a keen supporter who is a photographer please ask them to help capture the action and history.

Football

AFL6 Lucan Sarsfields 3-11 Na Fianna 2-14. Mobhi Road, 2/7/2023.

Not sure where to start. Snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat in a game where it always (well most of the time), felt that Lucan were one pass away from pulling clear.

The forwards scored 3-9. Midfield chipped in 1-1, and held their own, against a strong Na Fianna pairing; and the backs? Well they had a tough gig, and never stepped back. Shane got the choc bar for his string of exceptional saves, but in my head, none of the above would have mattered if we didn’t arrive with 15 players. Ken and his team somehow got 15 players on the pitch, and a bench. Missing 8 players from last Tuesday’s panel, meant the hunt for guys went on all week.

Holidays, J1, injuries, work and whatever you’re having yourself!!! Cathal & Ross from MF were much appreciated. Cathal got a late pass from baby duties. Work shifts were changed. Anyway we got a team out, and fair play to all.

You can’t drop in half a new team, and change roles for a few more, without getting hiccups. Lucan looked like a team that had been introduced to each other in the dressing room. Which, of course, they had. Na Fianna got the jump, with 3 early points. Cian, Eoin & Niall got an early demonstration that they would have an exacting morning.

Maybe a lot of new faces, but after a 9 minute introduction they got it together. Cathal broke up the left, unloaded to Tony in the corner, who popped to Adam off his shoulder, and there was Brian to do his “onion bag bursting” thing again! Back in the game. A minute later Adam made another lung busting run, David transferred to Jordan, and 3 down had become 3 up in just 2 minutes! It was a scrappy game. Perhaps Na Fianna had similar problems, because both teams were serially guilty of unforced errors. Turnovers aplenty may make for exciting viewing for the neutral, but nobody ever accused Ken of being neutral. It was tough on the line. Points were exchanged. That “exacting morning” I referenced above was reflected in Na Fianna picking up 8 of their 16 scores from placed balls, including 2 penalties!

Lucan were less fortunate at earning frees, so had to work hard for their scores, and none quite matched the simplicity of the 47th minute. Shane’s kick out to the wing was collected by Louis, on the run (as usual). Peter tipped on to Jordan, and Adam, who had been involved in both 1st half goals, was again the man in the right place. The goal pushed Lucan 5 clear, with a quarter to play. Unfortunately the goal lit a fire under Na Fianna, and Lucan were under the cosh until the end, but held on bravely for a point that keeps the playoffs on the table. James’s Gaels & Ballyfermot await. Outcome is in our hands.

Team: Shane Kerins, Niall Noran, Eoin Farrelly, Cian Gaire, Cathal Smyth, Callum Buchanan, Conor Sheary, Adam Conheady (1-1), Peter Carroll, Louis Butler, Brian Tracey (1-0), Tony Mulqueen (0-1), Dean Walsh (0-2), Jordan Delmar (1-7), David Brosnan. Subs: Daniel Coogan, Brendan Harkin, Ross Murray MF, Cathal Geraghty MF, Dean Davis.

Coiste na nÓg / Juvenile

U10 LGFA

Lucan would like to thank Straffords GAA for inviting us to compete in a blitz on Saturday 1st July in Ardclough GAA club. It was a really well run welcoming event with plenty of treats and snacks for the players and tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes for the mentors and parents, that was much appreciated. Please check out the action of the day on Straffords GAA facebook

Games were 10 a side and we had two panels of 13 players who put in a great effort in all six 15min games. Lucan entered 2 teams.

All the girls really stepped up their level of performance and there was plenty of skills and great team scores on show. Their dogged tacking and constant pressure on the opposition really impressed the mentors.

The girls and mentors had a really great day out and it was great to see both our teams perform so strongly against teams from Kildare, Meath and Offaly.

Both Lucan teams had some really great tight games against the two Edenderry sides who had some very talented players.
