AFL6 St Margaret’s v 0-19 Lucan 0-10 Sun 07/05/23, St Margaret’s

Oh but this was bitter medicine. It’s taken 2 whole weeks to get the taste out of my mouth. In fact it was so debilitating, that I couldn’t type for a full fortnight.

Beaten by 9 points would suggest that this went to the better team. It did. At least the better team at taking their chances. We don’t have a Stats Man (and lack a statesman, as well), but any list of Missed Opportunities would be lengthy.

A 4th defeat on the trot seemed inconceivable, after such a good start to the season. It’s hard to write these things when you’re on the losing side. I mean there’s only so many times I can put a positive spin on a dirty story. This is 4th spin of the wheel. Choices are:

1. Be nice Paul.

2. Don’t be nice………

As it’s taken 2 weeks to get over writers block, you’ll never know which option was selected. Discretion, tact, diplomatic. These are all words that spring to mind when you think of match reports.

Well, aren’t they?

Panel: S Kerins, C Sheary, C Kelly, M Young, C Buchanan (0-1), J Finn, A Garrigan (0-1), T Bradley (0-1), O Nolan (0-1), T Mulqueen (0-1), R Lamphiere (0-1), L Butler, N Moran, J Delmar (0-4), M Sharkey. Subs: P Carroll, A Dunne, C Gaire, D Lawlor, G Lenehan, D Walsh

Hurling

AHL 9: Ballyboden St. Endas 1-26 Lucan Sarsfields 0-14, Ballycullen 15/05/2023

This was a difficult away fixture against a team that is winning all games by wide margins. The game had an explosive start with a really high standard of hurling. Fifteen minutes in Lucan had four from play from the excellent Ross Campion and three frees converted by Finan Breen. Boden played to a high standard themselves and matched Lucan with 1-4 of their own. The performance levels diverged in the second quarter though - the better Boden got, the more the Lucan heads dropped; the more the heads dropped, the better Boden got! Boden added ten unanswered points before the interval with a combination of some poorly placed puckouts and a drop off in intensity offering up too many opportunities.

On the restart, Boden rattled off a further quick four points but Lucan regrouped to stem the tide. New blood and positional changes reinvigorated performance levels. Unfortunately, there were seven consecutive wides in the Lucan purple patch whereas the hosts added four more scores. Lucan's accuracy improved and they added six scores to finish stronger but it wasn't enough to alter the result.

Team: J Myler; P Farrell, T Swords, C O'Neill; D Lawlor, J McCarthy, D Quinn; L Farrell, J O'Connor; J Brant (0-2), F Breen (0-5: 0-4f), R Campion (0-6); R Brant, J Cavanagh, E Power; D Murphy, R Hearne, A Duffy (0-1), J McSweeney optimised our resources and all our teams fielded.

U17 Celtic Challenge

Dublin U17 Celtic Challenge hurlers have reached the Corn John Scott final on the 27th May in St. Brendan's Park, Birr at 1:30pm versus East Cork. Lucan lads Robert Kerr No.14 and Freddy Haran No.1 are part of the team. We would like to wish the lads and Dublin the very best of luck.
