Football

We are delighted that one of our Senior Footballers Daire Newcombe has secured a Leinster Senior Medal after the Dubs strong performance against Louth. Here below is Daire with David O’Hanlon from Na Fianna

Last Saturday week our Senior Footballers took on a strong St. Sylvesters side in the Twelfth Lock in the latest round of AFL1 fixtures. Having made a decent start to the league campaign in 2023, progress hit a bump in the road the previous Wednesday evening, with a loss to Clontarf in St. Annes Park.

Another fantastic crowd turned up to see a great tussle between the two sides. Having established a decent lead, Lucan came under sustained pressure from the Sylvesters side, coming back from four points down to lead by one going into stoppage time. A tense few minutes ensued, with Darren Gavin eventually drawing us level, before a fantastic team move was rounded off by Alan Murphy with a close range finish.

Our next AFL1 fixture is away to Na Fianna on Saturday 20th May at 6.30pm. All support welcomed.

Hurling

A busy week of hurling saw Lucan adult teams scheduled for 11 league matches in which they secured 9 wins on the field, 1 walk over and just 1 loss. The minors set the tone last Sunday (7th) with comprehensive wins for the Minor As (v Judes), Minor Bs (v Nh Fionnbarra) and Minor Cs (v Cuala). On Tuesday the Junior As had a good win over Naomh Olaf’s and then Wednesday night the seniors and Intermediates both recorded good wins over Cuala and Clannagael Fontenoy respectively. On Thursday night the Junior Bs had an impressive win over Realt Dearg while the Junior Cs received a walk over from Kilmacud Crokes. Saturday night saw the only loss of the week with the seniors going down to Faughs in a tight tussle at Tymon Park. The Intermediates got things back on track with a good win away to Kilmacud Crokes the same evening, and then on Sunday morning the Junior As concluded the week with a hard fought win over St Brendan’s. With many players involved with Dublin or unavailable due to injury, some of our teams were very tight for numbers and it was great to see good cooperation between Mentors to make sure we optimised our resources and all our teams fielded.

AHL1 Faughs 2-18 Lucan Sarsfields 0-21, Saturday 13/5/2023. Tymon Park.

Lucan went into this match on the back of 4 successive league win while Faughs were searching for their first. But it was the greater hunger of the home side that was evident and made the difference in the end. The opening exchanges were evenly contested but Faughs gradually got on top and a strong second quarter saw them 3 up at half time, 0-12 to 0-9. Lucan had recorded a few too many wides in that half which didn’t help their chances. 5 of their opening half scores came from Sean Harkness placed balls with Cian McHugh picking off a couple of good scores from play. Lucan raised the intensity a notch in the second half but two goals from Faughs proved decisive. Lucan missed a penalty and a couple of other goal chances but it was the hosts who held on to get a deserved win by 3 points in the end.

Lucan Team/Scorers: S McClelland, E O’Connor, P Rigney, P Smith, K Fitzgerald, H McCaffrey, L Walsh, R Stapleton, S Harkness (0-12, 0-10f, 0-2 ‘65s), D Flannery (0-2), C McHugh (0-3), M Coogan (0-1), E Dowling (0-1), B Coffey (0-2), C Keher. Sub introduced: Liam Garrigan.

AHL7 Lucan Sarsfields 1-16 St Brendan’s 1-13, Sunday 13/5/23. 12th Lock

Lucan Junior As recorded their second win of the week in this hard fought success over a decent St Brendan’s team. Despite playing against the elements Lucan started quite well and an early Neil O’Leary goal helped them to a 4 point lead. Brendan’s then took control and a succession of points punctuated by a goal had them in front. Brendan’s deservedly led 1-8 to 1-6 at half time and might have been a few more ahead with greater accuracy. Lucan resumed with the breeze in their favour and regained ascendency with a series of Ciaran Keane frees and had build up a 3 point lead before Brendan’s got their first score of the half. It remained tight to the end but some solid defending and good scores from Keane, Evan Lombard and Aidan Roche saw Lucan home by 3 points. Veterans Kevin Roche and Joey Byrne along with young Mickey Young were outstanding in the Lucan defence while Evan Lombard, Ciaran Keane and Killian Boylan did most damage upfront.

Lucan team/scorers: C Doody, J Doyle, K Roche, E Connolly, C Duffy, M Young, J Byrne, M Gormley, K Cooney, A Finnerty, E Lombard (0-3), C Keane (0-9, 0-7f) K Boylan (0-2), P Brennan (0-1), N O’Leary (1-0). Subs introduced: G Kennedy, D Reid, B McGarry, A Roche (0-1), J Mooney.

U12 LGFA

Two U12 ladies football teams travelled to Ballyboden on Saturday. We were greeted by their mentor Owen, a former Lucan man, and with one of our own mentors an original Ballyboden man, there was some great banter between the mentors. However it was the super performance of all the girls that we were all talking about at the end. Two very exciting matches with great teamwork, wonderful scores, and fantastic skills on display. Well done to all the U12 girls.
