Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

April 17, 2023

Team News

After a wonderful Easter break, all the action returned with a bang. Last week-end was Feile week-end for LGFA. Our Division 1 team was hosting and the club did a wonderful job, pitches were in excellent condition and the sun was shining not to mention the football.

The Jim McCarthy memorial match was well attended with many thankful of the numbers allowing a roll-on roll-off to occur much to the relief of the Johns ambulance who attended. Many recantations of old war tales followed in the bar where the lads could remember the old days with Jim over a sandwich and a pint.

There will be a special Gala Performance for Lucan Sarsfields at Fossett’s Circus at 11am on Saturday 29th April. Book online at http://bit.ly/CircusFossetts

Hurling

Four wins from five league games was a rich return from a busy weekend of action for our adult hurlers in the welcome late Spring weather. The only team to lose out were the Junior B’s who lost to Commercials. Our Seniors, Intermediates, Junior As and Junior Cs all won against Ballyboden, Cuala, Round Towers (Lusk) and St James Gaels/An Caisleán respectively. See match reports below.

AHL1: Lucan Sarsfields 0-21 Ballyboden 0-14, 12th Lock, 15/04/2023.

Lucan seniors remain unbeaten in the league after this decent performance against Ballyboden St Enda’s at the 12th Lock on Saturday evening. The large home crowd, which had enjoyed the rather leisurely paced football in the preceding Jim McCarthy Memorial game, had to adjust their sets for this higher tempo encounter. Lucan opened the scoring with a Seán Harkness free, his first of 10 points on the night. The game was tight and evenly contested throughout the first half as Boden used the breeze to pick off some nice scores from distance while Lucan were working harder for their scores at the other end. Nevertheless, Lucan led by 2 at the break, 0-10 to 0-8. A dominant third quarter proved decisive as Lucan added 5 points without reply to lead 0-15 to 0-8 after 45 mins and they held that advantage to the end, winning 21 to 14. Lucan used the bench to the full extent and great to see young players coming in and making an impact as we look to build the depth of the panel. Eleven different scorers and a very low count of scoreable frees conceded were positive signs also. The visitors were far from their best on the night and will certainly provide sterner tests in more crucial future encounters. Nevertheless, a pleasing performance with plenty to work on from a Lucan perspective.

Lucan team/scorers: S McClelland, L Walsh, P Rigney, E O’Connor, M McCaffrey (0-1), J McCaffrey, C Walsh (0-1), R Ward (0-1), C McHugh (0-1), C Dowling (0-1), K Fitzgerald (0-1), R Stapleton, S Harkness (0-10, 0-8f), J Dunne, C Keher (0-1). Subs introduced: L Garrigan (0-1), P Smith, M Coogan, B Coffey (0-2), H Cuffe (0-1).

AHL4: Lucan Sarsfields 8-25 Cuala 1-12, 12th Lock, Sunday 16th April 2023.

This game was as one sided as the scoreline suggests with Lucan establishing dominance from the start and had the game won well before halftime. At that stage they led 6-15 to 0-7 with full forward Ben Coffey helping himself to 4 first half goals. The other goals came from Niall Stagg and Brendan Kavanagh. Hugh Cuffe, Emmet Allen and David Kavanagh also kept the scoreboard busy in that half. The second half was slightly less one sided as the pace dropped considerably and the visitors managed to pick off a few more scores. Ben Coffey added two more goals however and Lucan ran out very comprehensive winners. Lucan Team/Scorers: C Murray, S Coffey, R Twomey, P Smith, J Finn, A McNulty (0-1), L Murphy, A Hickey, C Keenan (0-3), H Cuffe (0-6), E Allen (0-5, 0-4f), N Stagg (1-1), B Cavanagh (0-1), B Coffey (6-3), D Kavanagh (1-4). AHL7: Lucan Sarsfields 3-12 Round Towers (L) 0-9, 12th Lock. Sunday 16th April 2023.

Lucan Junior As had a comprehensive win over the visitors from Lusk on a beautiful spring morning at the 12th Lock. Evan Lombard set the tone with a good opening score and Lucan were always in front from there. Two goals within 4 minutes from full forward, Neil O’Leary, both old style ground strokes, in the middle of the half put Lucan in a commanding position which they never relinquished. They led 2-8 to 0-3 at half time and when Caoghan Cooney added a third goal near the end the game was well and truly settled. Eddie Connolly, Mikey Young and Cillian Morrissey all had very good games in the Lucan defence, midfielders Adam Finnerty and Cillian Boylan were both in the wars against some robust visitor actions and put in commendable performance while Evan Lombard and Gareth Kennedy were very lively upfront.

Lucan Team/Scorers: C Doody, J Doyle, J Byrne, E Connolly, D Reid, M Young (0-1), C Morrissey, A Finnerty (0-1), C Boylan (0-2f), C Cooney (1-0), E Lombard (0-3), C Keane (0-2, 0-1f), G Kennedy (0-3), N O’Leary (2-0), J Mooney. Subs introduced: A O’Neill, A Duffy, J McSweeney, L Farrell.

AHL 9: Lucan Sarsfields 0-13 Commercials 4-16 , 12th Lock, 16/4/2023

Following Commercials beating us in the Junior A Final last year and our U21 Final win over them, we are seeing an increased number of fixtures against one of our closer neighbours. On Sunday afternoon, their second team took home the spoils against our Junior Bs. In truth, they made the most of a quick start and established a lead that they would not relinquish. Two first half goals did a lot of damage and the visitors were more accurate in their point scoring. Their keeper also made an excellent save to keep James Cavanagh at bay when a goal was badly needed. At halftime, their lead was 2-10 to 0-6. Lucan rallied in the third quarter and our defence and midfield got on top to bring the score back to 2-10 to 0-10. Once Commercials scored though, it was as if a seal had been broken and they went on to add a number of scores in the final quarter and Lucan were not able to match them. Finan Breen was accurate from frees again and Jack McCarthy and Josh Brant showed for some good scores. Next game is a trip to Skerries and Lucan will be hoping to have some key players back for that trip.

Team: R Brant; P Farrell, C O'Neill, C Hannon; L Farrell, J McCarthy, D Quinn; C Ryan, D Lawlor; J Mooney, F Breen, R Campion; J Brant, J Cavanagh, E Power; P Kennedy.

AHL10: Lucan Sarsfields 2-17 St James Gaels/An Caisleán 5-7, AGP, 16/04/2023.

The Junior C Hurlers had their third match of the league campaign against St James Gaels on Sunday at AGP3. Having narrowly lost their first 2 league games the Junior C’s were looking to get their first win on the board on a very warm sunny afternoon.

Unfortunately St James Gaels could only field a team of 13 players on the day which meant that the game was 13 v 13. The extra space around the pitch seemed to work in St James Gaels favour very early in the game with them racing into the lead with 2 unanswered goals before a point from Conall Chambers settled the Junior C’s into the game and this was followed by a point from Deane Boylan.

St James Gaels responded with another goal as they again made better use of the space. Lucan dug in though after that goal and started to score points from play and frees from Deane Boylan and Adam Duffy to claw themselves back into the half and went to the half time break down by four points.

The second half saw Lucan go a little more direct and this paid off with a really well worked goal finished by Deane Boylan from a move that involved Niall Higgins and Donnacha Hassey. At this stage, halfway through the second half, the scores were level and Lucan seemed to be getting on top in areas of the pitch with Niall Higgins, Adam Whyte in Midfield and Jack Kelly and James Ryan getting a grip on the game in the Half Back Line. But there was more drama to come - St James Gaels managed to work a break and worked the chance to score their 5th goal of the game, with maybe 10 minutes left there was still time for Lucan to recover, a very well taken point from Jack Langan, before another free from Deane Boylan this time fell short but found the back of the net. The final few minutes saw both teams battling hard to win the game, and some last ditch defending from both sides, thankfully for Lucan they were able to manage their 1 point advantage till the end of the game.

In a very competitive game of hurling this relatively young team were able to dig in and get over the line to record their first win of the league campaign on a final score of Lucan 2-17 - 5-7 St James Gaels. Lucan Panel/Scorers: Luke O’Neill, Cian McCormack, Mick O’Malley, Sean Egan, James Ryan, Cillian Morrissey, Jack Kelly, Adam Whyte, Niall Higgins (0-1), Deane Boylan (2-04) Adam Duffy (0-6), Cian Cregg (0-2) Robert Hazley, Neil O’Leary, Conall Chambers (0-1), Jack Langan (0-1),Gareth Kennedy (0-2), Donnacha Hassey.

Coiste na nÓg/ Juvenile

Lucan had 3 ladies team compete in the Feile this week-end. The division 1 team hosted in the lock, whilst Division 5 travelled to Erins Isle with Division 10 travelling to Silverpark Kilmacud. All our teams competed well. Our division 1 team played some lovely attacking football in front of the home crowd. Having won 2 and drawn 1 they finished second in their group and progressed to a Semi-final against Naomh Mearnóg only to lose in the last half of extra-time to the eventual winners. Congratulations to all the girls, the future of Ladies football looks very strong.
