Pat Keane receives his President's medal from Chairperson Colm Farrell

The Annual Adult Awards for 2022 were presented on Friday 3rd March, and it was wonderful to see the function room packed to capacity, with a great attendance from players, mentors and parents. Chairperson Colm Farrell announced 36 presentations to Players of the Year across all 4 codes. These players were selected by their management teams and the reason for their selection is detailed below.

Two special awards were presented by the Ladies Football Committee. The first was to Siobhan Birnie, to mark the Dublin Under 16 Ladies Football team’s victory in the All-Ireland final last year. Not only did Siobhan claim an All-Ireland winners medal, but she also had the distinction of being awarded the player of the match award in the All-Ireland final. Siobhan is going to be continuing her Dublin journey this coming season as she is a member of this year’s Minor panel. The second award was to Triona Leonard, she was a coach to last year’s All-Ireland winning Dublin Under 16 team, and was a mentor to that team as they progressed through the age grades as a development squad.

The Club Person of the Year Award was presented to PJ Finnerty, in acknowledgement of the many roles he has played in the club, as a team manager, a maintenance volunteer, and participation in a number of fundraisers.

The Juvenile Management team of the year award went to Under 15A Camogie, for their remarkable success winning back to back league and championship finals in 2021 and 2022. The award was accepted by Eoin McDonagh and Laura O’Mahony on behalf of the management team which also includes Eoghan O’Shea and Anthony Nolan.

The Under 19A Hurling Management were awarded the Adult Management Team of the Year, for their achievement in winning the first and last Under 19 Division 1 championship in 2022. The management team was Tommy Flannery, Anthony Doody, Lenny McSweeney, Andy Harkness, Ciaran Murphy and Leon Breen.

Medal presentations were also made to Under 17B Hurling who won their championship and Under 17B Football who won their league.

The latest inductee to the Hall of Fame was also announced, none more worthy than Joe Byrne. Joe has been involved in the club for almost 40 years since his arrival in Lucan from his native Galway. He was a team manager at juvenile level for many years and managed a team who won a minor B hurling championship. He has been involved in many aspects of the club over the years and served as club president in recent times.

On the night, the new Club President was also inaugurated. Pat Keane Snr took over from Kathleen Roche who has served as club President for 4 years. Pat has been involved in several aspects of the club over many years, and most recently has been instrumental in the fantastic success of the Golf Classic last June. Pat is a dedicated supporter of the club, and it is only fitting that his contribution be recognised in this way.

A big word of thanks to Diamond and Gem for engraving all of the trophies. Thanks to Tim Crowley who was the photographer on the night. And finally a big thanks to everyone who helped out in preparing the room for the event.

    • Club Person of the Year

      PJ Finnerty

PJ has been involved in the club for over 20 years. He has managed teams all through juvenile level up to minor and won back to back championships at U15 and U16. After taking a brief break from management he took over the Junior B Hurling team. He has transformed the Junior B’s from a social team to a very competitive bunch of players and has won 3 championships with them. All of the players he has been involved with have great respect and admiration for him.

PJ’s involvement with the club does not stop with being involved with teams. He has strutted the catwalk in the Fashion Show and he took part the in hugely successful White Collar Boxing fundraiser.

During the Covid lockdown, PJ was part of the group of people who spent many hours doing general maintenance and repairs to the Club grounds. In recent years he has taken over responsibility for the maintenance of the pitches. He takes great pride in his work and gives up much of his spare time to ensure that the pitches are in pristine condition for all matches. Everyone will agree that the club pitches have never been in better condition and are commented on by opposition teams.

PJ Finnerty’s pride in his club can be seen in the work he does to ensure our pitches are maintained to an excellent standard and in his support for our teams throughout the year.

      Under 17B Football

      Dillon Ryan

Dillon thoroughly deserves recognition for his tireless work on the pitch. His consistency and battling have proved pivotal in games. He sets a standard in a game that can often give some of the other lads the boost they need. He is also a great guy to coach as he listens and never has a complaint when asked to take on a different role (except the odd occasion when he smells the chance to get a point and we need to get the hook out !!) All in all a brilliant attitude and that’s where it starts from, well done Dillon.

      Under 17B Hurling

      Sean Corry

Consistently doing the right thing, keeping a cool head and showing great leadership at full back

      Under 17A Football

      Jamie Smith

The Under 17A footballers enjoyed a fine year, reaching the Minor A Championship final as well as finishing joint second in the Division 1 League. Many players contributed greatly to the success of 2022 and it is very difficult to pick out one particular player to receive this award. However, our centre half back stood out in every match and demonstrated incredible leadership and consistency over the entire season. He also represented the club as a Dublin Minor in 2022. The U17A player of the year is Jamie Smith.

      Under 17A Hurling

      Ryan Clancy

Ryan was the preferred choice not only of the U17 management team but also of his teammates which speaks volumes of the influence that he had last season. His commitment to the group is an example to his peers. That same commitment was seen all season long, not only on the training field but also in challenge, league and championship games, where Ryan’s performances from midfield drove our team consistently.
But Ryan’s commitment to develop away from the collective sessions is where he has made his mark most notably. He is fearless. Driven. And coachable. All qualities that raise the standards of our group. It gives us great pleasure to name Ryan Clancy as the U17 ‘A’ Hurler of the Year.

She well deserves this award, and it’s my absolute pleasure to nominate her. Well Done Saidhbh.

      Blathnaid Ni Dhuibhir

This year’s U21B Camogie player of the year showed great leadership and a never say die attitude in her 1st year at this level.
She displayed a maturity beyond her years, especially in the final game, when she sacrificed her own natural attacking game in order to curtail the opposition’s best player. She is the 1st to arrive at training, never misses matches or training & constantly looks to improve her game. Our U21B Player of the Year is Blathnaid Ni Dhuibhir.

The Under 21 player of the year is in his last year at this grade. The team played 3 matches to win the B championship scoring 3 goals and 53 points over those games. This player scored 33 points of that total. His leadership as well as the example he provided on the pitch was an inspiration to those around him. Junior C Football

      Daraigh Quinn

Our player of the year has been a shining example of commitment, determination and pure grit. Between training, matches and walking the Camino, we commend his passion and leadership both on and off the pitch. When heads were down he was a leading voice and an inspiration to the team. He was always on hand to lend his experience to the younger members of the team.
Exemplified by an unbelievable block that was forever immortalised in photo and is probably on his mantelpiece. We are delighted to name Daraigh Quinn A.K.A Chucky as our Player of the Year

      Junior C Hurling

      Tiernan Swords

With eight different players getting a nomination across the management team, this illustrated how competitive the group has become with a run to the semi-final in championship and promotion in the league being achieved. However, one player was in everyone’s shortlist reflecting the regard that the management team had for his commitment, performances throughout the year and general positive attitude towayany challenge faced. The Jun C player of the year is Tiernan Swords.

      Junior B Camogie

      Riona McKearney

This year’s Junior B player of the year has showed great attitude & application throughout 2022. This was her first year at Senior Camogie, having had a very successful Juvenile career. She proved what a versatile player she is, starting at Centre Forward, moving to Wing Forward, and eventually ending up in Midfield, where her power and athleticism really came to the fore. She has a great attitude at training and works extremely hard at improving her game.
Our Junior B Player of the Year is Riona McKearney.

      Junior B Football

      Tommy Mulhall

For Junior B Football in 2022 proved to be a year of transition after a very disappointing 2021. New management members and several new players both young and some not so young, performances improved and eventually results followed. Finishing 3rd in the league was followed by a very successful championship campaign where we fell at the final hurdle to a very strong St. Judes team. Management had several candidates to choose from and our POY had consistent in his performance every game which was the outcome of total dedication in his preparation. His practice and his focus on the key skills of forward play delivered a massive personal score tally of 19-61. A player with a bright future ahead. The Junior B footballer of the year for 2022 ........is Tommy Mulhall.

      Junior B Hurling

      Mark Gormley

Outstanding season and commitment to team.

      Junior B Ladies Football

      Lauren Markey

Lauren has always shown great commitment and attitude in both training & games. She slotted into the half back position like a duck to water and gives it everything in matches. Unfortunately, Lauren suffered an injury during the season which kept her out of action for a while but she always came along to support the girls. Only for Lauren we wouldn’t have the support of her better half Craig, he was always willing to show his skills at being umpire when asked.

      Junior A Camogie

      Aisling Colfer

This player has shown continued improvement since joining our team from the juvenile ranks of the club. She has a great attitude in training and in games and is always encouraging towards her teammates. The Camogie Junior A player of the year is Aisling Colfer.

      Junior A Football

      Jordan Delmar

There were 3 names in the hat. All 3 of them were called Delmar. Honesty, bravery and outstanding commitment despite ongoing injury concerns, means that Big Bro, Jordan gets the nod

      Junior A Hurling

      Anthony McNulty

For consistent high level of performance throughout the year

      Junior A Ladies Football

      Erris Smith

Erris has been involved with the team for a number of years at this stage. Having been moved up two divisions to Division 5 last year, we were looking for everyone to stand up, and show that we deserved to be playing at that level. As a team, they did this in spades, and finished in the top half of the league. Erris was one of many who led this charge from the front. She has a never say die attitude to her game and has always shown leadership on the field and is therefore a worthy winner of our player of the year award 2022.

      Intermediate Camogie

      Rachel Boyhan

A newcomer to Lucan Sarsfields, this player settled in quickly. She is fiercely determined, not afraid of the hard tackles or fussy referees.
Despite working weekends her attendance at matches and training has been excellent, so long as she ends up at the right pitch. Laois’s loss has been our gain, our Intermediate Camogie player of the year is Rachel Boyhan.

      Intermediate Football

      Oran Tully

The intermediate football player of the year joined the squad from the Junior A team a couple of years ago. He had played midfield on that team but was moved into a corner back position at an early stage of his intermediate career. He has settled into this new role and is now an automatic inclusion in team selections. He is a strong and committed defender who uses the ball well and often is the starting point for attacks. He turned in a series of excellent performances throughout the year and one of his best attributes was his consistency across the whole season. His commitment to both training and matches was an example to all of his teammates. The Intermediate footballer of the year is....... Oran Tully

      Intermediate Ladies Football

      Patricia Gordon

This player showed unbelievable dedication and commitment throughout the season. Having picked up a very nasty ankle injury early in the season that required surgery she followed all medical advice and made sure that she was fit and well for both the championship and the end of the league, and all of this was done with a smile on her face.. Throughout both of these competitions she demonstrated great leadership both on and off the pitch and consistently performed at the highest level.  We have a young squad and Patricia is certainly a strong role model for those younger players and is very worthy of this award.

      Senior Camogie

      Laura Sharkey

This player is the type of player squads are built around. A player with an unbelievable appetite for improving her own game while raising standards around her. It was her first season to play in one of the most important positions on the field and made it her own early in the year. This player is also one of the most popular players in the squad, always with a smile on her face, while at the same time, the one player you want by your side when going to battle.

      Senior Football

      Darren Gavin

This is a player that needs no introduction as he has been a consistent performer for the Senior team for several seasons. No longer the young up and coming lad but he has developed into a mature well-rounded player both on and off the field. In the 2022 season he played consistently to a standard that sets him apart from most other players. His playing style is both easy on the eye yet and super effective within the often hard-hitting engine room of the team. He carried his good form in the league Division 1 into the championship with 3 very impressive performances. He capped off a great year on the field by then helping his younger teammates win an U21 Championship as a coach.  A sign of things to come in the future we hope........ Lucan Sarsfields Senior Footballer of the year is ....... Darren Gavin.

      Senior Hurling

      Chris O’Leary

This player has hit the ground running in 2022 and has been a very valuable addition to the team. His scoring contribution from play and placed balls has been significant throughout the year culminating in his callup to the Dublin Senior team for 2023. Senior Hurler Player of the year is Chris O’Leary
