Football

Congratulations to Abby Shiels who played for Dublin in their 2-11 to 2-07 league victory over Mayo last Saturday. Great to see Daire Newcombe starting again for Dublin in their win over Clare in a double header that featured Chris O’Leary for the Dublin Senior Hurling in Croke Park. Maith Siabh.

Minor B LF

Lucan Sarsfields Minor B LF welcomed St Bronagh's GAA club Rostrevor from County Down on Saturday the 18th of February for a challenge match to kick off the season. Rostrevor turned up in their own very impressively labelled GAA minibus. Lucan sportingly supplied two players Emma Kavanagh and Kamile Bertonas to Rostervor who had a few players unavailable on the day. Lucan's two players then scored 5 points and 1 point against the home side! Niamh White Captained the team for Lucan. Goals from the Keller sisters from Lucan made a very exciting game with plenty of scores on all sides. Dylan from Rostrevor refereed ensuring no injuries and a game that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to the parents for the sandwiches and cakes which were appreciated by our guests.

Hurling

Lucan fielded 5 adult hurling teams for the first time this Sunday as the new season commenced with the opening rounds of the Leagues. Our seniors obtained a draw away to St Brigid’s, the Junior As had a good win in Donabate against St Pats while there were narrow losses for the Intermediates, Junior Bs and Junior Cs.

AHL Div 1:St Brigids 0-19 - Lucan Sarsfields 0-19. Russell Park, 26/2/2023.

This opening round league game was played on a bright crisp spring morning in excellent conditions for the time of year. A strong breeze straight down the pitch had a significant influence on the game as both sides struggled against it. Lucan had the benefit of the breeze in the first half and started very well. They established superiority early in the middle third and provided a platform for the inside forwards to create openings. Some early chances went abegging before the scoreboard started to click over more regularly with both Donie Flannery and Cian McHugh coming onto ball in space and taking some nice points. Lucan were 0-13 to 0-7 at half time and will feel they should have been further ahead.

The roles were reversed in the second half as Brigid’s got on top around the middle and took some great scores from distance to gradually narrow the gap. They eventually levelled and when they went a point up with a few minutes left they had all the momentum and it looked ominous for Lucan. However, Lucan retained their composure and finished well to force a draw. Overall, a draw was a fair result and both sides will look for improvement in their next outing. It was a youthful Lucan team with some of last years Under 19's getting their first taste of competitive senior hurling and they acquitted themselves very well. Paul Rigney and Johnny McCaffrey were as solid as ever in defence while Donie Flannery had a great game at midfield. Cian McHugh shone in a forward line in which Ciaran Dowling was also prominent scoring well from both play and frees.

Lucan Team/Scorers: S McClelland, P Smith, P Rigney, M McCaffrey, C Walsh, J McCaffrey, L Walsh, D Flannery (0-4), R Stapleton, E Dowling (0-1), C McHugh (0-3), H Cuffe, S Harkness, C Dowling (0-9, 0-5f), C Keher (0-1). Subs introduced: E O'Connor (0-1), R Smith, S Coffey.

AHL Div 9: Na Gaeil Óga 3-7 Lucan Sarsfields 0-14, St Catherine’s park 26/2/2023

Lucan had an away fixture against near neighbours Na Gaeil Óga on Sunday afternoon. Lucan conceded an early goal in a slightly slow start and were 1-2 to 0-3 behind after the opening exchanges with Ryan Brant, a Finan Breen free and another by Jake Mooney getting Lucan on the board. As the game progressed, Lucan started to take more control but were unable to convert a number of chances. Lucan did end the half the stronger with three more Breen frees opening up a slender 0-7 to 1-3 advantage at the interval.

The first seven minutes of the second half were quite significant. Despite another Breen free and some early pressure, Lucan conceded 1-2 and were reduced to 14 men. This wake-up call proved something of a catalyst and Lucan went on to dominate. Five further Breen frees and a second from play from Jack McCarthy put Lucan into a three point lead as the game entered the closing stages. The home team converted a contentious 65 and added another placed ball. With the game in injury time, an excellent strike following a break down the right found the net and was the final act in this tense encounter. This was a typical early-season game and both teams will be looking to improve on a rusty performance. Lucan will need to add more scores as there was an over-reliance on Breen's striking from placed balls.

Team & Scorers: J Myler; E Power, P Farrell, C O'Neill; C Hannon, T Swords, D Lawlor; J McCarthy (0-2), C Ryan; J Brant, F Breen (0-10f), R Brant (0-1); G Kennedy, J Cavanagh, R Campion; J Mooney (0-1).

U8 Ladies Football

The under 8 girls football had their first challenge match of the year with St Judes in Tymon park. On a cold February morning we had 35 girls, 11 mentors and countless parents, guardians, aunties, uncles and grandparents travelled with us for what was a very enjoyable morning.

From the picture it looks like alot of fun and an enjoyable first outing.

Camogie

Lucan Sarsfields U15A Camogie team got their league campaign off with a home win against Ballyboden St Endas. Last time out Lucan Sarsfields played Ballyboden St Endas was in the championship final in October, but this league game was a much closer affair with tough battles been fought in all areas of pitch. Ballyboden St Endas started well with an early goal but Lucan Sarsfields came back into the game with a half time lead on a score line of 2-5 to 1-1 .

The second half saw Lucan Sarsfields extend their lead with some well taken points and a goal. But in the last 10 minutes of the game Ballyboden St Endas rallied to score two quick goals to make it a nail biting finish.

Lucan Sarsfields survived to secure a win with the final score line of 3-10 to 4-2 .

Next game in the league is away to Na Fianna

Our number 1 priority is player welfare and we’d like to remind parents and adult players that players need to be registered and paid members of the club in order to be covered by insurance.
