Hurling Championship Update

This Sunday was a critical day in the hurling championship calendar with all four of our adult hurling teams in quarter-final action. Our three Junior teams all progressed with good wins for the Junior As over Cuala, Junior B's over Naomh Fionnbarra and Junior C's over Stars of Erin. However, it was the end of the road for our Senior team who lost out by 4 points to Ballyboden St Endas. So a disappointing end to a championship campaign that promised much after our first ever league win back in July. Nevertheless, progress is being made and credit is due to the panel of players, management and backroom team who worked tirelessly over the season. The league win was a major achievement and a lot of new players got valuable senior experience and we are building a panel of greater depth to compete in future years. Our three Junior teams now progress to the semi-finals in two weeks’ time where promotion will be the prize, as well as a place in a championship final. The progression of these teams to the next level is important for the future of hurling in the club and we wish them well in their preparations over the next two weeks.

Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Final: Ballyboden SE 2-21 Lucan Sarsfields 0-23. Parnell Park, 25/9/2022

This was perhaps a missed opportunity for Lucan seniors, as they matched Boden in most facets of the game and will feel they could have won this. Lucan played with a significant breeze in the first half but it was Ballyboden that got the better start and led 0-3 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. Boden seemed to show more physicality in those early exchanges. Lucan gradually got into the game and had a one point lead, 0-4 to 0-3, after 15 minutes with the early scores coming from Chris O'Leary and the Crummey brothers. A key moment of the match came in the 20th minute when a short puck-out by Lucan got turned over and, after several failed Lucan attempts to secure possession, the ball ended up with a simple tap in by Niall McMorrow to the Lucan net for a very soft goal for Ballyboden. Boden quickly added the next couple of scores to open a six point lead after 22 minutes. However, Lucan then reacted to these setbacks and finished the half strongly, reducing the gap to just two points at the break, 1-10 to 0-11, helped by three well taken points from Colm Walsh. Lucan were facing the breeze in the second half and their task increased considerably when Ballyboden got a second goal in the third minute of the half, this time a well taken penalty by Paul Ryan. Lucan keeper Seanie McClelland was adjudged to have fouled the incoming Ballyboden forward, after Boden had capitalized on an unfortunate injury to Luke Walsh, to create a goal opportunity. Despite this setback Lucan kept battling and had slightly the upper hand for much of the second half. A couple of points each from John Bellew and Ciaran Dowling and the reliability of Chris O'Leary from placed balls helped reduce the deficit to a couple but Boden always managed to get the next score when needed to keep Lucan at bay. Lucan didn't create the goal chance needed to bridge the gap in the final minutes and Boden held on to win by 4 in the end. Veteran Johnny McCaffrey was once again to the fore in the Lucan defence while Colm Walsh had a very good hour at mid-field and Chris O'Leary carried most threat in the forwards, as well as being very reliable from placed balls. Lucan team/scorers: S McClelland, M McCaffrey, P Rigney, P Claffey, L Walsh, J McCaffrey (0-1), J Bellew (0-2), R Smith, C Walsh (0-3), C Dowling (0-2), C Crummey (0-1), C O'Leary (0-12, 0-9f), P Crummey (0-1), CJ Smith, C Keher. Subs introduced: A Murphy, L Garrigan (0-1), C McHugh, K Fitzgerald.

Junior A Hurling Championship Quarter-final: Lucan Sarsfields 0-22 Cuala 1-7. 12th Lock, 25/9/2022.

Lucan secured their place in the semi-final of the Junior A championship for the third year in a row with this very comfortable victory over Cuala. Lucan established their dominance from the outset and played with high intensity and workrate, linking up very well as a team, to build a commanding 8 point lead in the opening 20 minutes . While the intensity dropped somewhat after that, they held the advantage to lead 0-12 to 0-4 at half time. Sean Harkness was unerring from placed balls and Ben Coffey showed well with some early scores in this opening period. Lucan coasted for much of the second half and while the work rate probably didn't match the first half, they had more than enough hurling to see them through without too much trouble. Cuala did manage a goal midway through the second half and would have had another near the end but for an excellent save from Cillian Murray. Lucan used the bench and showed the strength of the panel in the second half, Overall, it was a good performance but the opposition were disappointing on the day and Lucan will face a much stiffer test at the semi-final stage. Sean Harkness (who was excellent from placed balls), Ben Coffey and Emmet Allen all played well in the forwards, Rob Ward and Eoghan O'Connor worked hard at midfield and Anto McNulty anchored a very solid backline. Lucan Team/scorers: C Murray, T Beahan, R Twomey, P Smith, G Millea, A McNulty, L Murphy, R Ward, E O'Connor, B Aird (0-1), E Allen (0-2), R Stapleton, S Harkness (0-13, 0-11f, 0-1 '65), A Carroll (0-1), B Coffey (0-4). Subs introduced: P Kelly (0-1), C Keenan, A Sheehan, O O'Brien, I Crowley.

Junior G Championship Q/F V Starts of Erin in the 12th Lock

This game started at 100 miles an hour with both teams tearing into each other. The tackling was intense which produced few scores, with both teams on 3 points apiece after 15 minutes. The game opened up suddenly when a well struck sideline cut by Stars of Erin went straight to our net. This gave the visitors a boost and Lucan's hopes of reaching a semi final took a dent until up stepped Finán Breen who ran from the 45 metre line and jinked past a defender giving him space to blast the ball to the net. Liam O'Connor then added a point from play which put us a point up. Breen was on hand again when he connected first time with a crossed ball from James Cavanagh to add a second goal to his tally. The half finished with both sides trading points from play to leave us 4 points up 2.5 to 1.4. For the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half it was all Lucan. We scored 6 unanswered points in that period and played some very direct hurling, with everyone playing their part. With less than 10 minutes to go things were beginning to boil over with the visitors' frustration coming out in some very rash challenges. In truth we kept our cool, but for one mistimed challenge the ref decided to produce a red card for Charlie Casely, who had been on the pitch for less than 10 minutes, but had added a point from play and had been involved in some very promising moves. With less than 10 to go and an extra man Stars of Erin pushed on, but with the game in the bag Lucan took their foot off the pedal, conceding 1.3, but we weren't finished - Jake Mooney found the net in the dying minutes to seal an impressive victory. Full Time Lucan 3.12, Starts of Erin 2.8

Team: Justin Meyler, Daire Murphy, Donnie Hassey, Pearse Farrell, Darragh Quinn, Paddy Kennedy (C), Tiarnán Swords, Rob Moloney, Cathal Shanahan, Finán Breen (2.0), Liam O'Connor (4F, 2 65's 0.1 from play), Jake Mooney (1.1), Eoin Power (0.1), James Cavanagh, Paul Keegan (0.2). Subs; Ray Hearne for R.Moloney, Charlie Casely (0.1) for Paul Keegan, Conor O'Neill for Donnie Hassey and Liam Farrell for Eoin Power.

U12 Camogie

Following the summer break, our U12 girls camogie team has been back in action with training restarting in late August. We are continuing to see good progress with the girls, in particular for those who have been practicing and taking part in summer camps. Our first match took place against St Vincent's at home. We saw a really strong performance from all Lucan teams. It was a wet and miserable day but all girls put in a really gutsy performance with some great scores from play. All 3 Lucan teams came away with a win. Our second match took place away to Faughs on Sept 17th. We lined out 3 (mixed) Lucan teams. All 3 matches involved tough physical encounters. We came away with one very strong win where we scored 8-3, with great contributions from some players. The other two matches went the way of Faughs, one very narrowly so a few tweaks needed for next time. We continue to develop all our girls at training and very much enjoy seeing the progress from players at all levels.

U12 Hurling Div. 2, O’Tooles Vs LS1

Lucan 1 travelled to Pairc Ui Taithaill last Saturday for U12 division 2 clash. O’Tooles started much the faster scoring 3 points before Lucan boys knew they were in a game. Leon Brennan and Johnny Donovan began to get the ball rolling and to ease Lucan into the game. Lucan led at half time 0-5 to 0-4. On a tight pitch and with O’Tooles playing with a sweeper meant the game was plagued with lots of rucks and low scoring. A fantastic goal by Jack Biggs seems to set Lucan up for a win but O’Tooles were not going away. The match finished O’Toole 1-7 Lucan 1-7 with both sides happy to get something from the game. Squad: Daire Sheehan, Victor Adankin, Óisin Brady, Tomás McSweeney, Conor O’Keefe, Liam Dunne, Leon Brennan, Jack Biggs, Ronan Kelly, Quinn Damer, Conor Colohan, Johnny Donovan, Alex Mahon, Conor Sheehan

U12 Hurling Div. 7, Fingallians 2 Vs LS2

Looks like a one sided game on the scoreboard but the reason was that our lads never gave them a chance. It was a brilliant performance throughout the team. First to react in their head and first to every ball. It was great to see the vocal team support for each other on the pitch and also the support of the injured teammates who came to cheer on, despite not playing. We can really see the skills improving every week, especially the first touch. Keep practising lads at home. Lastly, a very special thanks to Matthew Fogarty for keeping his eyes open in at least one of my snaps.. Sars Abú Squad: Darragh Mc Andrew, Dara Kelly, Andrew McGarry, Peter Hickey, Cormac Hallinan, Matthew Doherty, Alex Morley, Dylan Hearn, Dáithi O’Reilly, Matthew Colfer, Adam Breen, Liam Gamble, Daniel Carroll, Darragh Lynn, Matthew Fogarty

U12 Hurling Div. 10 Clanna Gael-Fontenoy 2 Vs LS3

Great game from boys today, hard fought for everything and pushed very hard for a win in a very evenly matched game. No score in first half from either team. Clanna Gael beat us 1:1 to 0:0- free's for Clanna Gael probably cost us the defeat. Overall, parents and mentors were very happy with boys effort. Squad: Jessie Byrne, Andrew Smyth, Eoghan Cawley, Daniel Hartigan, Alex Neville, Samuel DeLacy, Luke Flynn, Cian McGowan, Luke Delaney, Nathan, Kyle McCormac, Darragh Grenville, Ethan Smith
