Hurling Championship Update

We had another successful weekend of hurling results with our seniors accounting for St Brigids on Saturday afternoon in O'Toole Park to set up a quarter final vs. Ballyboden. On Sunday morning, our Junior A’s completed the group stage with five wins away to St Vincents. The Junior B’s also won and topped their group beating St. Finians Swords away by 2-15 to 2-12. In the afternoon, the Junior C’s also completed the group stages unbeaten at home against Clontarf. As all Junior teams won their groups, we are assured of home quarter finals in two weeks’ time. Well done to the management teams and players for all qualifying for the knock-out stages. See match reports below.

SHC Lucan Sarsfields vs. St. Brigids, O'Toole Park 10/9/22

With just six teams qualifying for the knock-out stages of the remodelled ten-team Senior A Championship, as opposed to the eight-from-sixteen of previous years, this year was always likely to produce some tense moments. And so it proved in this encounter which was a must-win game for both sides. The early exchanges were edgy with little fluent hurling on display as the teams traded some opening scores. Lucan gradually eased into the ascendency but some wides and slight inaccuracies prevented them from taking a firm grip on the scoreboard. Lucan led 6-4 after the first quarter which featured six different scorers. Lucan tightened up on their play in the second quarter and four Chris O'Leary frees and a Ciaran Dowling point left the score line at 11-6 at the break.

Chris Crummey kick-started the second half when he powered through and found the net to put some daylight between the teams. A lone John Bellew point was Lucan's only other contribution for the next while in a phase when Brigids won a lot of frees but were unable to take advantage. Midway through the second half, Brigids did win a penalty. Seanie McClelland saved the first effort from Johnny McGuirk but the referee ruled it be retaken for encroaching. McGuirk converted on the second attempt. The Brigids momentum was short lived however as O'Leary worked hard to convert an immediate reply from close range. Cian McHugh and O'Leary combined shortly afterwards with admirable precision to send a second goal crashing to the net. Brigids free-taking woes continued and stymied any chance they had to close the gap. Sub Liam Garrigan scored two tidy points either side of two converted placed balls. A late second-yellow for O'Leary had no bearing on the result and Lucan deservedly qualified for the quarter-finals on a score line of 2-17 to 1-11.

Junior A Hurling Championship, St Vincents 2-5 Lucan Sarsfields 8-15. Pairc Naomh Uinsionn, 11/9/2022

Lucan Junior A's completed the group stage of the championship unbeaten after this facile win played in a downpour at PNU's all weather pitch. The combined impact of the weather conditions, the very tight pitch and the relatively poor opposition will mean Lucan will have learnt little from this win but, nevertheless, it was a good performance and they will be pleased to complete the group stage and progress to the quarter-final unbeaten and top of the Group. Lucan started well with a couple of nice early points from Rory Stapleton and Andy Carroll. Lucan continued to dominate and goals from Luke Murphy and Carroll and a couple of more points from Stapleton had them comfortably ahead at half time 2-7 to 0-3. It continued to be largely one way traffic in the second half. While Vincent did manage to break through for a couple of goals, they were raining in at the other end as half time substitute CJ Smith helped himself to 3 and there were also goals for other substitutes Ben Coffey and Matt Coogan while Andy Carroll got a second. Philip Smith and Barry Aird were very composed in a Lucan defence that was seldom troubled, while Rob Ward in mid-field and Rory Stapleton in the half forward line were excellent throughout. Andy Carroll showed very well at full forward while the second half scores from the substitutes, particularly Smith and Coffey, showed the strength in depth. Overall, Lucan completed the task in hand very comfortably and played some decent hurling despite the conditions. There will be tougher tasks ahead but they have a strong panel to draw from with plenty of competition for places ahead of the quarter final in two weeks time.

Lucan team/scorers: C Murray, T Beahan, R Twomey, P Smith, G Millea, B Aird (0-1), L Murphy (1-0), R Ward (0-2), E O'Connor, O O'Brien, E Allen, R Stapleton (0-6, 0-1f), C Keenan, A Carroll (2-2), J Dunne. Subs introduced: B Coffey (1-3), CJ Smith (3-1), K Cooney, I Crowley, M Coogan (1-0).

Junior C Hurling Championship vs. Clontarf, 12th Lock, 11/9/2022

Our Junior C's again played out the last adult fixture of the weekend on Sunday afternoon. The rain cleared up before the start but there was a gusty wind at times - this favoured the visitors in the first half. Clontarf started well and converted two scores almost from the throw-in. Lucan's first attack showed intent though and Jake Mooney fed Eoin Power who duly found the net. Clontarf bounced back and put over two more scores but this time is was Paul Keegan's turn to find the net with just seven minutes on the clock! Clontarf then became a little wayward with their shooting and went on to have nine wides before half time. They did score 1-2 but Lucan settled into the game and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Mooney was proving a handful and Liam O'Connor was accurate from placed balls so Lucan stayed ahead on a scoreline of 2-6 to 1-6 at the interval.
Following the resumption, Evan Hollowed struck a low shot off his left for goal number three. Clontarf were unable to make any significant impact as every time they scored, Lucan responded until there were just ten minutes remaining. Keegan then added another goal before a long range effort from Finan Breen also found the net for goal number five. Mooney got a closing point for Lucan who won on a final score of 5-12 to 1-12 and completed the group stage of the championship unbeaten.

Team & scorers: J Cavanagh; P Farrell, A Flanagan, C O'Neill; L O'Farrell, P Kennedy, T Swords; D Quinn, R Moloney; L O'Connor, F Breen, J Mooney; E Hollowed, P Keegan, E Power; D Lawlor, J O'Toole, C Ryan, S Egan, C Chambers; M O'Malley, R Brant, J Brant.

U12H Div. 2, Lucan Sarsfields 1 Vs Castleknock 1, St. Catherines Park, 10/9/22

After picking up their first league win against St. Sylvester’s two weeks ago, Lucan 1 hosted Castleknock 1 in Catherine’s Park. Conditions were perfect for hurling and both teams gave a great account of themselves. The game ebbed and flowed with neither side able to gain dominance for very long. A draw looked the likely outcome, but Castleknock scored late to take the points. Lucan were left a bit disappointed but can be proud of their performance.
Final result Lucan 3-6 Castleknock 4-7

Squad: Daire Sheehan, Victor Adankin, Óisin Brady, Daniel Carroll, Tomás McSweeney, Conor O’Keefe, Liam Dunne, Leon Brennan, Jack Biggs, Ronan Kelly, Quinn Damer, Conor Colohan, Johnny Donovan, Alex Mahon, Conor Sheehan

U12 Div. 7, Lucan Sarsfields 1 Vs St Vincents 2, Fairview Park, 10/9/22

A brilliant performance by Lucan 2 this Saturday, Lucan started a little slow up front against a very strong St Vincent's team, but our defence was like a rock all day keeping the Marino boys to 1.1 for the entire match. First half was a very tough battle and we had difficulty making the ball stick and scoring, only managing 1 point from a free.  The second half was a totally different affair where we were switched on fully in every position. We started with an early goal which helped spur us on a little.  We drove hard against the opposition, were first to every ball, made the ball stick to us, drove through tough challenges and peppered their goal with 5.1. The second half score was unanswered due the continuing pressure our defenders and goalkeeper placed on every single Vinnies attack and player. A brilliant 1.1 v 5.2 win for Lucan Sarsfields. The boys should all be very proud of their performance today. Keep up the hard work on picking and catching at home.
Final Result, St. Vincents 1-0 Lucan Sarsfields 5-2

Squad : Darragh Mc Andrew, Dara Kelly, Andrew McGarry,  Adam Elhadi, Peter Hickey, Cormac Hallinan, Matthew Doherty, Dylan Walsh, Alex Morley, Cameron Lindsay, Dylan Hearn, Dáithi O’Reilly, Matthew Colfer, Adam Breen, Liam Gamble

Lucan Sarsfields 2 U12H

U11 LGF & Camogie

The U11 girls had a busy weekend. On Friday evening they were delighted to have Triona Leonard and Siobhan Birnie with their U16 Leinster ladies football and All Ireland cups. Many of the girls recognised Triona from her days training at the academy and even though the girls had grown since then Triona was able to address many of them by name which was an added bonus. The girls had plenty of questions for Siobhan and were delighted to take photos with Triona, Siobhan and the cups. On Saturday afternoon the U11 ladies football teams had a home game with St. Judes. Between the 2 groups we had almost 90 girls playing football, which was a great turnout. We would like to thank our four Lucan referees who did a great job on the day and had no trouble explaining to the girls why they blew the whistle etc, which was of great benefit.

Then on a very wet Sunday morning the U11 camogie group went up to the club to support the senior camogie team. They gave the senior girls a lovely guard of honour as they left the dressing room. The U11 girls cheered on the senior team and even got to play a quick game at half time. The U11's then continued to watch the senior girls and were very impressed with their skill level. Many of our U11's want to follow in the footsteps of these senior players.

U9 Ladies Football

Well Done to all our U9 girls who braved the downpours on Sunday morning, great dedication and teamwork.

Masters Football

Dublin Masters just missed out this weekend on an All Ireland triumph, hard luck to Tommy and the lads. Perhaps you are one of those lads at home watching these games still yearning for an intercounty call-up, or missing the crack of training and then a well deserved mid-week refreshment. It’s not too late to kick start the journey back in your club. Our Masters Footballers are looking to recruit new players to their squad. They meet on Thursday nights and play a reduced-contact Go-Games style football with the emphasis on enjoyment. Players of all levels are very welcome. It's a great way to meet other club members, get some exercise and have a bit of fun.

Remembrance

We regret that the club learned of the passing of Fr. Tom McCarthy who served the Lucan parish of St. Marys as Chaplain. Fr. Tom played both codes for the club in the 70’s. His team mates have fond memories and remember him for his dedication on the field, so much so they tell us that he often shortened the mass service so he could attend the match.
