Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

Team News

The adult hurling championships are reaching a crucial stage and this weekend was the penultimate round of group games. Unusually, we got two walkovers, with both the Junior A and Junior C teams receiving the points without playing as the opposition failed to field. For the games that did go ahead, we had mixed fortunes – the Seniors lost out to Kilmacud Crokes and the Junior B’s had a good win over Faughs – match reports below. As we head into the final round in two weeks time, the seniors face a do or die battle against St Brigids, a win will see us through to the quarterfinals, anything less will see us in a relegation playoff. Our Junior As and Junior Cs have both already qualified as group winners. The Junior B’s are well placed but need something from their final game to be sure of progress.

Senior Hurling Championship, Kilmacud Crokes 1-24 Lucan Sarsfields 0-18, O’Toole Park, Saturday 27/8/2022

Champions Kilmacud Crokes had a comfortable win over Lucan seniors in this penultimate group game. Lucan should have and would have been much closer, but for a large tally of wides from both play and placed balls, however Crokes were certainly the better team overall and fully deserved their win. Lucan had started quite well, getting the first score - a point from play from Chris Crummey, and were certainly competitive in the early exchanges. As the game reached the mid point of the first half, Crokes led by just 0-7 to 0-6. However, their talismanic full-forward Ronan Hayes then got on the end of a long delivery and managed to put the ball in the net despite the best efforts of Lucan full-back John Bellew and Sean McClelland in goal. This was a key moment in the game and it was Crokes who pressed on exerting their dominance in the middle third and establish a deserved half-time lead 1-13 to 0-9. Lucan made some changes at half time and sought to regain the initiative early in the second half but a succession of wides denied them any real momentum and Crokes were always comfortably ahead on the scoreboard and on the field. Lucan didn’t give up and laid siege to the Crokes goal in the final stages but couldn’t get the goal needed to put any pressure on Crokes. Overall, a disappointing day for Lucan and lots to ponder before the final Group game against St Brigids on Saturday 10th.

Junior B Hurling Championship, Lucan Sarsfields 1-17 Faughs 0-15, 12th lock, Sunday 28/8/2022

Lucan Junior B’s faced Group leaders Faughs needing a win to sustain the push for a quarter-final place. They responded to the task and emerged deserved winners after a very good performance. Lucan established early dominance and took their scorers well. Shane Donohue was very accurate from placed balls and the returning “yanks”, Ciaran Keane and Andy Carroll, showed they didn’t leave it all on the Californian beaches with some well taken scores from play. At half-time Lucan led 0-12 to 0-6. A response was expected from Faughs in the second half and it did come as the gradually got into the game and narrowed the gap. However, Andy Carroll broke through for a vital goal for Lucan in the 38th minute and that gave them the breathing space needed for the rest of the game. Caomhán O’Conghaíle made a notable impact when introduced in the second half and added two vital points. The Lucan defence was very solid throughout with Shane Coffey and Mick May both very impressive, and they denied Faughs the goal chances they needed to get back into the game. Overall, it was a deserved win for Lucan who showed some great team inter-play at times and were up for the battle also when needed.

Lucan Team/scorers: L Finnerty, S Coffey, K Roche, T Clandillon, J Mullins, P Fagan, M May, J Byrne, M Gormley, S Donohue (0-7, 0-5f, 0-1 ’65), E Lombard, C Keane (0-3), K Boylan (0-1), D Reid (0-1), A Carroll (1-2). Subs introduced: P Kelly (0-1), A Roche, C O’Conghaile (0-2), B Kavanagh, D Coogan.

Junior A LF Div 5 Cup Semi-final Castleknock B 2-12 Lucan 3-3, Somerton

The result didn't go Lucan's way on the night with a score line of 2-12 to 3-3 and Lucan took their exit from this year's cup competition. Our semi-final spot was booked earlier in the year with wins over Crumlin (6-5 to 4-12); Cuala B and a draw with Portobello (0-8 to 0-8). While it was very disappointing to exit at the semi-final stage as the girls worked hard to get to the final, it's another step in the right direction for this team who jumped up two divisions to play Division 5 cup and league and Junior C championship getting to a shield final.

This year's season had its challenges for the girls to balance the front loaded League and Cup season along with a summer championship but they gave 100% every match day with support from our minor and U16 girls when needed. We look forward to our final league game next Wed the 31st in Ballymun. Many thanks for those who travelled to support the girls on Wednesday night.

U11 LGF

The U11 ladies football teams were delighted to be back in action this week. The noise and excitement on AGP during the week was fantastic as we heard all their summer news and the fun the girls had at different sports camps over the break. We also welcomed some new members to the group and we hope they grow to love the sport and make lots of friends. On Saturday afternoon the girls travelled down the road to Castleknock where we got a very warm welcome. There was great support on the side-line from parents and mentors. The girls played two great games of football and enjoyed being back as a team. We all look forward to the term ahead and thank all our parents for their continued support.
