Junior A Championship, St Mary’s 2-9 (1-6) v 2-13 (1-7) Lucan Sarsfields 07/08/22, Saggart

Bit of a roller coaster. Definitely some ups and downs, with a bit of Punch & Judy in the middle. Definitely had the feel of championship midway through 2nd half. Nearly as much action on the line, as on the pitch. Mary’s players & Lucan mentors seem to have differing interpretations as to when a ball is in / out of play.

After a few tough assignments lately, Lucan could have been forgiven entering Pairc Mhuire, with some trepidation, but it was Lucan that started the better, and should have been further ahead than 0-1 v 0-4 after 10 mins. Noel & Jordan shared the spoils. Naturally Mary’s started to get into the game, and bossed the next 10mins, scoring a rather healthy 0-5, followed by an excellent move that left Dean no chance.

1-6 v 0-5 on the scoreboard looked bad, but it could’ve been worse, as Mary’s had fluffed their lines with 2 clear goal chances.

Hard to pin down what happened but their 10 min purple patch came to an end, and it was Lucan that wrested back the steering wheel. Jordan popped 2 frees, and Brian made the late run into the square, after a neat build up with Marc & Brendan, to take the final pass and pull the trigger for a bullet into the net. Dan Gallagher had joined the fray, and along with Davy, they had steadied the ship cutting out a lot of the through balls that had troubled us in the 1st half. But what helped calm nerves even further, was Brian popping up for a repeat performance with another well taken goal, but then wonder of wonders, he went and added a point. What is rare, is beautiful.

5 points clear approaching the final 10mins and Lucan looked in control. This is when Punch & Judy Show began. A couple of disputed line balls certainly added tension, and Mary’s were quick to latch onto this atmosphere. There were some interesting tackling techniques being practiced around the pitch, and some cards were brandished. Both sides can feel fortunate they were only yellow. A few other lads might feel fortunate that their head is still sitting on their shoulders. Zach was on exceptionally up tight and personal terms with their full forward. No truth in rumours that they’ve exchanged phone numbers! Joking aside it was championship fervour, but unlike Punch & Judy, no striking was witnessed.

The deficit was twice reduced to 2 points, and although time was ticking away, Mary’s were still throwing the kitchen sink at it. Niall, Seamus & James definitely put their bodies on the line, Davy somehow tipped a goal shot away, but it was Dean that stood tallest, twice taking balls under his crossbar, and clearing our lines.

Lucan broke free, and Louis was on hand to slot the point and give everyone a breather. Timmy collected the kick out and fed Noel in the corner. It looked as though he was running down the clock, but when his man got in a little too close, he pressed the accelerator and very gently allowed himself to be pulled to the ground. After some dusting down he added the free, and the ref had seen enough.

When I say he “pressed the accelerator” that doesn’t mean that there was any resulting change of pace.

A win in Saggart is never easy, but when you get them they are all the sweeter.
