Team News

Colm Nally a GAA Master Tutor attended Lucan this Monday with a great turnout from all our mentors who gained some useful insights to coaching football and also got some tips to refresh the training drills.

Thanks to Colm for supporting this it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

In Ladies Gaelic football, two of our Sars Stars Rebecca O’Reilly and Sophie McIntyre started for Dublin v Wexford in the Leinster Minor B Championship Semi Final. Full time Dublin 3-06 (15) Wexford 1-10 (13). Good luck in the final ladies.

Sean O Neill (U17 hurling keeper) representing Dublin came in 4th place in the Leinster An Poc Fada competition last Saturday.(Sean Langton was his spotter)

Another good weekend for our adult hurlers capturing maximum points from four league fixtures. Our seniors, Junior B’s and Junior C’s all had good wins on the field while our Junior A’s received a walk over. All four teams are either first or second in their league tables as we approach the final rounds.

AHL1 St. Vincents 3-18 Lucan Sarsfields 4-16, Pairc Naomh Uinseann, 26/6/2022.

Lucan Seniors edged ahead of St Vincents in the race for a place in the league final with this narrow win in a very competitive and entertaining game at Pairc Naomh Uinseann. A strong diagonal wind favoured St Vincents in the first half but Lucan started well and edged ahead with a goal from Charlie Keher after just 5 minutes. Vincents responded with a goal at the other end in the 9th minute but Lucan goaled again just a minute later when Eoghan O’Conghaile finished neatly after being played through by Ciaran Dowling. Vincents chipped away with a few points at the other end before Dowling got through for a great goal in the 16th minute to complete a remarkable opening quarter. Vincents used to breeze to resume ascendancy in the second quarter and took the lead with a goal in the 28th minute. St Vincents led by 2 at half time after a high scoring and lively first half ending 2-11 to 3-6.

Lucan turned with the wind in their favour for the second half but the challenge quickly got much bigger as Vincents goaled from a penalty at the start of the half to lead by 5 points. A couple of nice points from play from Paul Crummey and Charlie Keher and from placed balls by Chris O’Leary helped Lucan reduce the deficit and they got back on terms when Paul Crummey finished brilliantly for Lucan’s fourth goal mid way through the second half. It was tit for tat from there to the end as Lucan struggled to make use of the strong breeze with some long deliveries finding the end line before the Lucan forwards could get to them. However, Chris O’Leary scored a fabulous point from a side-line ball and was reliable from placed balls in the closing stages which helped Lucan to a one point win in the end. It wasn’t a vintage performance from Lucan and there is plenty to work on, but good to come out on top in such a tight encounter and in a venue where away wins are rare enough.

Lucan team/scorers: S McClelland, P Claffey, P Rigney, A Byrne, J McCaffrey, C Crummey (0-1), R Smith, J Bellew, C McHugh (0-1), K Fitzgerald, C O’Leary (0-10, 0-6f, 0-2‘65s, 0-1sl), E O’Conghaile (1-0), C Keher (1-2), C Dowling (1-0), P Crummey (1-2). Subs introduced: D Flannery, E Dowling.

Naomh Barrog Vs. Lucan Sarsfields,Jun C, 24/6/2022

Lucan played away in St Fintan's School in Sutton on Friday evening on a short pitch that looked to be closer to the Kalahari than the Emerald Isle - not a single blade of green grass to be seen. Barrog only had thirteen players at the start - they dug out another body as the game went on. Lucan won the toss and played with the aid of a very strong wind and took early advantage with eight scores converted in the first eight minutes - the last one being Shaun Keegan finding the net having been put through by Liam O'Connor. Lucan continued to chip away on the scoreboard despite Barrog getting their first point. Goal number two followed good work by Cathal Shanahan in midfield and was put away by James Cavanagh playing with an advantage. Lucan continued to put over a string of points and a fortunate goal by Barrog did nothing to slow our momentum. A late push towards the end of the half resulted in goal number three being touched home by Liam O'Connor who had pushed up from midfield. At the break, the lead was 3-20 to 1-1.
Against the wind in the second half, the key was to hold possession and this was executed to perfection by the forwards with Oisin O'Brien and Ciaran O'Brien working a succession of "one-twos" resulting in Oisin batting to the net. Shortly afterwards, Shanahan and Ciaran combined in a similar fashion with Ciaran finding the net this time. Barrog added three goals and a few points as the half wore on but O'Connor maintained 100% accuracy from placed balls culminating in a netfinder from outside the 20m line at the end of the game. Lucan backs were solid but not really tested. O'Connor and Shanahan in midfield did a lot of work with O'Connor scoring 1-5 from play. Shaun Keegan and the O'Briens - Oisin and Ciaran - were lively up front but it was a solid team performance that resulted in a 6-24 to 4-7 victory.

Team & Scorers: J Myler; D Hassey, A Flanagan; C Ryan (0-2), P Kennedy, R Moloney; L O'Connor (2-11: 1-5f 0-1'65), C Shanahan; O O'Brien (1-4), P Keegan (0-1), S Keegan (1-2); C O'Brien (1-3), J Kavanagh (1-0); C O'Neill, M Daly, C Chambers, J Brant (0-1), F Hazley.

U15 National Hurling Feile

Congratulations to our U15 Hurlers who made it to the Semi Final of the National Feile in UCD. The boys were unlucky only losing by 1 point in their last game.

U11 Football

Our U11 Boys continued their national tour travelling to Portlaoise on Sunday to play in a Blitz involving Naas, Tullamore and Portlaoise. We also had a couple of the players from the U-10 panel, who made a big contribution. Lucan entered 2 teams in the blitz. Each team played 4 games in testing conditions. The boys demonstrated great skill, determination and teamwork. With each game they improved and by game 4 had mastered playing in the inclement conditions. A particular highlight was watching the boys sing Amhran na bhFiann before their last match, great practice for when they line out in Croke Park in the future. We would like to thank the parents and coaches for bringing the boys to the game and coaching them through the Blitz. A massive thank you to Portlaoise GAA for organising the Blitz and for inviting us. The organisation and planning of the event was second to none. We look forward to hosting them at some point in the future.
