Team News

We are happy to report a very good week for our adult hurlers, with 7 wins and a draw from 8 league games over the mid week and weekend rounds. All 4 teams are competing at the top of their Division with about two thirds of the league campaign completed.

AHL1: Na Fianna 1-16 Lucan Sarsfield 1-20 Mobhi Road, 28/5/2022

Lucan seniors got their second league win in 4 days in a very competeive tussle with last years league champions Na Fianna. The exchanages were evenly macthed throughout but a strong final quarter saw Lucan prevail. Na Fianna got an early goal from a penalty and held that advantage to half time, leading 1-9 to 0-10 at the break. Lucan were very reliant on Chris O’Leary for scores in the opening half, as he was accurate from play and placed balls. Lucan upped the intensity a notch in the second half and gradually gain a slight ascendancy. This was rewarded with a Chris O’Leary goal, also from a penalty to give Lucan the advantage on the scoreboard that they never relinquished. A better spread of scorers in the second half, and some very solid defending helped Lucan to a 4 point victory in the end.

Lucan team/scorers: S McClelland, P Claffey, R Rigney, E Seery, P Smith, C Crummey (0-2), A Byrne (0-1), Rob Ward, C McHugh (0-1), E O’Conghaile, C O’Leary (1-11, 0-8f, 1-0p), D Flannery (0-1), E Dowling (0-1), P Crummey (0-1), C Keher (0-2). Sub introduced; S Harkness.

AHL5: Whitehall Colmcille 0-7 Lucan Sarsfields 4-14 Collins Ave, 29/5/2022

A dominant third quarter helped Lucan to a comfortable win in this top of the tabel clash. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half, Lucan were well on top form the outset but some early inaccuracy meant the dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard. A deftly finished Sean Harkness goal eventually got things moving. Not too long after, Ian Crowley got a second goal finishing a move he started with a well timed tackle and turnover. However, the hosts refused to yield and it took a flurry of late points to give Lucan the type of lead theye needed at half time, 2-7 to 0-3. A strong fighback from Whitehall was anticipated when they turned with the wind at their backs but it was Lucan who stepped things up and played better against the breeze than with it. Two more second half goals, from Eoghan O’Connor and a second from Harkness had the game over as a contest long before the finish. Overlal a very godo team performance in difficult conditions, with Rob Twomey excellently leading a solid defence and the youthful pair of Sean Harkness and Liam Garrigan doing a lot of damage in the forward line.

Lucan team/scorers: C Murray, A Sheehan, R Twomey, T Beahan, G Millea, A McNulty, L Murphy, D Kavanagh (0-1), J McCarthy (0-2), I Crowley (1-0), E Allen (0-1f), E O’Connor (1-1), S Harkness (2-3, 0-1f, 0-1 ’65), N Stagg, L Garrigan (0-4). Subs introduced: O O’Brien (0-2), K Masterson.

AHL7: St Brendan’s 3-10 Lucan Sarsfields 0-23 Longmeadows, 24/4/2022

A pleasant evening away at St Brendan’s Longmeadow’s pitch saw the Junior B hurlers play the first half into a steady breeze and low sun. A Sarsfields team benefitting from new talent, started positively with a quick point from Evan Lombard that whizzed just over the bar. However, it wasn’t long before high lobbing sliotars by the opposition into the Sarsfields back line resulted in some quick goals. The goals were difficult to defend due to a low sun in the eyes of our defenders and goalie. Our cause was not helped by the Sarsfields level of ball handling errors, and an experienced and direct opposition who continued to add points and a goal. However, Sarsfields stayed in touch with sweet points from play and frees from Shane Donohue, Killian Boylan, and new joiner Shane Coffey and further key saves by Luke Finnerty. By half time the opposition were only 5 points ahead after having all the advantages.

Sarsfield got off to a good second half picking off points from play and frees to eat into the opposition lead. The Sarsfield defence was much improved and started to dominate the opposition, sending in long distance balls to the half forward line. While the opposition found it hard to score, and squandered a number of free opportunities, Sarsfield steadily closed the gap and took their chances. By the last few minutes of normal time Sarsfields were level, and within additional time Sarsfields pulled away with well taken frees to end up 4 points ahead at the finish.

Lucan scorers included: Killian Boylan 9 pts (5 frs), Shane Donoghue 8 pts (5 frs), Evan Lombard 2 pts, Shane Coffey 1 pts Cathal O Maolmhana 1 pts.

Lucan Jun C vs. Na Gaeil Óga 26/5/2022

We had an easy run out vs. Na Gaeil Óga on Thursday evening in AGP3. The visitors only had the bare 15 and went through a round of introductions before throw-in to get on first-name terms with their teammates - never a good sign! Playing with the wind in the first half, we put up a score of 2-20 at the halftime break. The number of scores was lower in the second half but the goal count was higher and we finished with a tally of 8-31.

Team and scorers: J Myler; A Flanagan, T Swords, C O'Neill; D Murphy (0-1), P Kennedy, R Moloney; L O'Connor (0-6: 0-3f, 0-1 65), L Farrell (0-1); S Keegan (0-1), R Hearne (0-4), C Ryan (2-4); C Caseley (0-7), P Keegan (2-2), M Daly (3-1); E Hollowed (1-0), C Chambers, S Egan, P Farrell, D Hassey.

St. Monicas vs Lucan Jun C 29/5/2022

Having been knocked out by Monicas at the quarter-final stage of the championship last October on a scoreline of 3-15 to 1-17, we were looking to close the gap on Sunday afternoon with a return visit to Edenmore. This was a closely contested game and we played with the aid of a blustery wind, blowing slightly from right to left. Paul Keegan opened the scoring but Monicas responded with a goal against the run of play. Cian Ryan & Oisin O'Brien levelled up the game before Monicas went up by two again. Ciaran O'Brien put over one from play and a placed ball to tie the game before Monicas sneaked ahead again. Another Oisin score plus a placed ball from Ciaran restored a slender lead for us. On 23 minutes, Monicas took advantage of a breaking ball which was hand-flicked to the net from close range. Charlie Caseley closed the half with his opening score with the higher wide-count being suffered by Lucan on a count of 12-9. We started with a greater intensity after the break and created a number of goal opportunities with Ciaran converting one after being put through by a Caseley cross-field pass. Four converted frees for Monicas against two points from Oisin tied up the game in the middle of the second half. Two further points by Caseley who was warming to the task coupled with an Oisin 65 - shaped nicely against the wind - moved us into the lead again. Monicas now started to score from play and closed the gap to the minimum before Ryan's second score gave some extra comfort. Another Monicas free was cancelled out by Caseley's fourth from play. Two closing scores for Monicas tied up the game which was blown up promptly. The end-game had descended into a bit of a farce with numerous stoppages and melees breaking out with the referee struggling to control the game. In the end-phase, we defended heroically and deserved to get something from the game.

Final score: St Monicas 2-12 to Lucan 1-15

Team and scorers: J Myler; A Flanagan, T Swords, C O'Neill; P Farrell, P Kennedy, R Moloney; O O'Brien (0-5: 0-1f 0-1 65), L Farrell; E Hollowed, S Keegan, C Ryan (0-2); C O'Brien (1-3: 0-2f), P Keegan (0-1), C Caseley (0-4); D Lawlor, D Hassey, J Brant, C Chambers, S Egan, R Brant, M O'Malley.

AHL7 Lucan Sarsfields 2-17 St Bridget’s 0-10 12th Lock, 29/5/2022

Following a successful outing against St Brendan’s earlier in the week, the Junior B Hurlers met a 15 man St Bridget’s team on Pitch 1 on Sunday 29th May for what turned out to be a one sided affair.

Sarsfields started the first half with a strong northerly breeze at their back playing towards the canal end. First score came to Killian Boylan who swung over a beautiful point from an acute angle to get Sarsfields up and running. It was to be the first of many for Killian. For the next few minutes the two teams traded scores, before Lucan started to pull ahead mostly due to free’s given away by a slow and undisciplined Bridget’s back line. Killian Boylan converted one of the frees to a goal when the sliother dipped under top right corner of crossbar and upright. The Bridget’s puckouts didn’t often get past midfield so that Sarsfield’s continued to rack up scores with fine points from Daniel Cogan and Evan Lombard. Bridget’s got off to a better start in the second half and they outscored Sarsfield in the 3rd quarter. However at no time was the Sarsfield defence ever threatened. The solid full & half back line and goalie kept a clean sheet. By the 4th Quarter Sarsfields reasserted themselves with a fine point from Shane Coffey, a great goal by Mark Gormley followed by points from Peter Fagan and Kevin Roche. By the end Sarsfield deservedly won by 13 points.

Lucan Team scorers included: Killian Boylan 1-12, Daniel Cogan 1 pt, Evan Lombard 1 pt, Mark Gormley 1 Goal, Shane Coffey 1 pt, Peter Fagan 1 pt, Kevin Roche 1 pt.
