GAA launch initiative to eliminate single-use plastic bottles

As part of its new Green Clubs programme, the GAA, in collaboration with the Regional Waste Management Authority and Irish Water, recently launched an initiative to eliminate single-use plastic bottles from Gaelic Games clubs and grounds.

St Patrick’s GAA club in Limerick, Park/Ratheniska GAA club in Laois and Lucan Sarsfields GAA club in Dublin were joined by An Uachtarán CLG, Larry McCarthy, in Croke Park to launch the ‘Puc Single-Use’ initiative. The three clubs are amongst 45 clubs in Ireland taking part in the pilot Green Clubs programme and, along with Clarinbridge in Galway and Cappagh in Kildare, are members of the Waste group of the GAA Green Club programme. Waste is one of five thematic areas being explored by participating clubs, along with water, biodiversity, energy, and transport. Read full article here

David Moran was able to give some of the campers at the football camp last week a reusable water bottle from @IrishWater .  This is as part of our Green Club project and our commitment to reducing waste, eliminating single use water bottles and encouraging good habits.  The kids can bring their bottle to training and matches and fill it at the outdoor tap at the dressing rooms.  We should all follow their lead and ditch single use plastic!

Adult Hurling Division 5 League Final:

Lucan Sarsfields 5-8 Skerries Harps 0-14.

Lucan captured the league title with some well taken goals and a high work rate throughout to overcome a determined Skerries team. Lucan got a great start when Eoghan O’Connor burst through and fire a ground stroke to the net. A second Lucan goal came soon after from Evin Dowling and they led 2-2 to 0-4 at the first sos uisce. Skerries came strongly in the second quarter with a series of points but another goal from Lucan midfielder Eoghan O’Connor and a well taken point from Rory Stapleton saw Lucan ahead at the half time break 3-4 to 0-10.  Lucan were hungry for more goals and they came early in the third quarter with two expert finishes from Emmet Allen and Oisin O’Brien. That effectively finished the game as a contest and Lucan were comfortable from there to the end, though without troubling the score board operator too much.

This was a deserved win for a Lucan team in which the back line was very solid throughout with Anto McNulty and Luke Murphy to the fore. The midfield and half forward line worked hard and generally dominated around the middle third. And of course goals win games and Lucan excelled in that department with some excellent movement and finishing to see them home.

Lucan team/scorers: Fintan Clandillon, Aidan Sheehan, Anto McNulty, Tadhg Behan, Gavan Millea, Luke Murphy, Philip Smith, David Kavanagh (0-1), Eoghan O’Connor (2-0), Oisin O’Brien (1-0), Emmet Allen (1-5, 0-4f), Rory Stapleton (0-1), Cathal O’Maolmhana, CJ Smyth, Evin Dowling (1-1).

Subs introduced: Ian Crowley, Anto Lee, Diarmuid Reynolds, Keith Masterson, Jack McCarthy, Paddy Ward.

Panellists: Cian Canavan, Tadhg Clandillon, Fintan Ward.

Management: Dermot O’Brien, Kieran Murphy, Tom Flannery, Liam Strong, Seamus Clandillon.

GO AHEAD IRELAND Junior 3A Camogie Championship Round 1

BBSE v Lucan Sarsfields. 24 August 2021

Report by Dublin Camogie Reporter Grainne Hogan (Nh Olaf)

It was a close and skilful game between 2 evenly matched and skilful teams, on this August evening. The first half was very goal heavy, with Ballyboden scoring 3 goals that were put in the back of the net by Molly Conway and Ciara Woodcock. Lucan followed with their 1 goal scored by Laura Lawless. The Lucan ladies made up for the Boden goals with the 9 points that were put over the bar in the first half by Aoibheann Scott, Emma Kate Carroll and Laura Lawless. Lucan Sarsfields led by 1 point at half time, the score being Ballyboden St. Endas 3-2 to Lucan Sarsfields 1-9.

At the beginning of the second half there was a superb play by Lucan, the sliotar travelled from defender Kerrie Jones to Clara Finn and onto Aoibheann Scott who slotted it between the posts. 4 more points from BBSE followed. The Ballyboden goalie, Sarah Reynolds, kept her side in the game when she saved a hard ball that was heading for the back of the net. A Lucan free that was converted by Aoibheann Scott secured the 2 point win for Lucan Sarsfields. The final score being Ballyboden St. Endas 3-6 to Lucan Sarsfields 1-14
