Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

July 23, 2021

A very busy week for all our intercounty players. Dublin Senior Footballers are once again in a Leinster final following last Sundays win over Meath, congrats to Emmet O’Conghaile.  Despite a superb goal from Mark Lavin, Dublin U20 footballers lost the Leinster final by three points to Offaly on Thursday evening. Commiserations to Mark, Colm Walsh and Luke Curran. The night before, Dublin Minor hurlers were edged out by Wexford by the same margin in the Leinster Semi. Again commiserations to Jack Behan, Liam Garrigan, Joey Dunne and Rossa Daly.

This Saturday sees the minor footballers taking on Meath in the Leinster Semi Final, Best of luck to our Sars players, Finn Bruton, Zach Delmar, Jamie Smith and David Mulqueen all hoping for game-time. In round 2 of the senior camogie championship, Emma Flannagan, Ali Twomey and the injured Laura Quinn are the Lucan Sarsfields representatives on the panel to face Waterford in Parnell Park on Saturday, while on Sunday, the intermediate squad, with Ellen Dunphy and Laura Sharkey travel to Meath for championship round 1. Dublin’s Camogie minors are also in action this Sunday, in round 1 of the championship, when they take on Galway at 2pm. Best of luck to manager John O’Connell,  Cliobhna Ní Bhuchalla, Hannah Gibbs, Phoebe Shannon, Millie Reid, Sinead Daly and Sophie McIntyre. Best of luck also to Dublin camogie U15’s Aisling Fitzpatrick, Caoimhe Costello, and Mia Farrell; facing Antrim; and Shauna Rooney and Eve Bruton; facing Kildare. In Dublin U14 Camogie, Eva Collis will be part of the team to face Westmeath and Chloe O’Shea will be part of the team playing Tipperary. We wish all the very best of luck.

The third round of the adult hurling leagues were played last weekend and it was mixed fortunes for Lucan with wins for our Junior As and Junior Bs, but defeats for the Seniors and Junior Cs. The action commenced on Thursday night when the Junior As got the better of Faughs in AGP, and then the following evening the seniors lost out to Kilmacud Crokes at the 12th Lock - see match reports below.  Also on Friday evening the Junior Cs lost to Good Counsel/Liffey Gaels on a scoreline of 2-7 to 6-13. Then on Sunday morning the Junior Bs had a good win over Kevins 4-12 to 2-8.

Our Senior Footballers recorded their first win over Thomas Davis for 10 years, with a pair of goals in each half to run out 5 point winners. Read the match report on the Dublin GAA website

In Ladies football, the inters had an away league win at Skerries, while both junior teams won their first championship matches at home. Minor A and C both won at home to Kilmacud in the last of the round-robin league games.

U16A camogie reached the Div1 League final with a win over Erins Isle. Elsewhere in Camogie, the seniors took the points away to Plunketts while the Inters shared the spoils with Naomh Olaf.

Results for all games and match reports are below

Adult Hurling Report

AHL1: Lucan Sarsfields 0-13. Kilmacud Crokes 0-19.

Lucan seniors lost out to Crokes in what was a rather niggly match with not very much fluent free flowing hurling from either side. Lucan had started well and got the first three scores but Crokes gradually got into the game and were just one behind at the first water break. By half time the visitors had taken the lead, 0-10 to 0-8.  The second half had a lot of stop-start periods and Lucan could never get enough momentum to close the gap. By the second water break the visitors had extended the lead to 6 and they held that advantage to the end. John Bellew was the outstanding performer for Lucan on the night.

Lucan team/scorers: D O’Neill, B Aird, P Rigney, P Claffey, J Bellew, J McCaffrey, M McCaffrey (0-1), R Smith (0-1), K Fitzgerald (0-3), P Kelly (0-1), E O’Connor, L Walsh (0-1), C Keenan, C Dowling (0-5, 0-4f), D Flannery (0-1). Subs introduced C Keher, R Stapleton, H Ladd.

AHL5: Lucan Sarsfields 1-16. Faughs 0-13.

Lucan Junior As continued their good start to the season with this third league win. This was a hard fought win and Lucan needed a late goal from CJ Smith to settle the issue. Faughs led at half time 0-6 to 0-5 but Lucan gradually got the upper hand in the second half and were deserving winners in the end. Eoghan O ‘Connor was excellent in midfield for Lucan while the half forward line of David Kavanagh, Emmet Allen and Oisin O’Brien did most of the scoring damage. This game also saw the welcome return of Rory Stapleton to competitive action after an 18 month absence through injury.

Lucan team/scorers: C Canavan, A Sheehan, R Twoney, T Behan, G Millea, A McNulty (0-1), A Lee, E O’Connor, I Crowley, O O’Brien (0-2), E Allen (0-10, 0-6f), D Kavanagh (0-3), R Stapleton, CJ Smith (1-0), K Masterson. Subs introduced: F Clandillon, J McCarthy, C Hogan, D Reynolds.

Ladies Football

Junior A Ladies Football Update July 2021

With the numbers taking part in underage Ladies Football at the club continuously growing over the last number of years, it was always only a matter of time before this fed through to the adult section. This started to emerge in 2019, when two teams took part at minor level for the first time, with 3 teams emerging last year, and this year there are 4 teams at minor level.

The next challenge was to try and ensure that as many of these minor players as possible would continue to play at adult level, and have an ongoing production line feeding into the first team.

There were two adult Ladies Football teams for a number of years, so the plans were afoot to get a 3rd team in place for 2020, but the big C struck, and things were put on hold. However a year on, with the numbers continuing to grow, (players not Covid that is!), the planning started. In early June, the club had 3 adult ladies football teams participating for the first time.

From a Junior A (2nd of 3 teams) perspective, the first game out was in the Cup against St Annes. After a slow start, the girls got back into the game, but ultimately poor shooting was to prove costly and we lost by 2 points. But at least things were up and running, with plenty to work on. Over the next few games, a slow start would be a common theme. Thankfully though as the confidence grew, and the girls got more and more familiar with each other, the results started to come. One more Cup and 2 League games followed, with the girls remaining unbeaten along the way. This week we played our 1st Championship match of the season, and with that traditional slow start (albeit reduced to the first 5 minutes for this game), the girls maintained their ongoing unbeaten run. It was a great week for the adult ladies football teams overall, with all 3 recording wins.

Next up is Na Gaeil Og in the next round of the championship, so fingers crossed the duration of the ‘slow starts’ continues to reduce, and the duration of the winning run increases.

With an overall panel of 23, the season so far has been a real team effort, with the girls bonding more and more as the weeks progress. Between girls doing leaving cert and college exams and then the ongoing Covid challenge, the team sheet takes a different angle every week. Thanks also to some 2004 girls who have also helped out when required. The next cog in the wheel is already taking shape!!!!!

Panel : Emma McGivney, Lauren Finan, Lorna Sexton, Cliona O’Donnell, Aimee Kate Clynne Farrelly, Niamh Stokes, Katie Hegarty, Lauren Dawson, Dani O’Connor, Aisling Kavanagh, Ali Dune, Anna Cuffe, Chloe O’Connor, Erris Smith, Aoife Seery, Aoife O’ Kane, Faye Murphy, Roisin Egan, Bella Faye, Orla O’Toole, Cora O’Toole, Maria Furmaniak, Phoebe Shannon.

U15 Ladies Football League div1

Ballinteer St Johns v Lucan Sarsfields, Marlay Park, 17-07-21

Lucans U15 LF have had a steep learning curve in their first full league campaign in division 1.  In the first 5 games, while the scoreline hasn't favoured the Lucan girls, the effort has never dropped and their performances and scoring rate have improved in every game.

On Saturday 17th July, Lucan travelled to play Ballinteer in Marlay Park on a balmy hot, for their 6th league outing.

After a 'warm up' in the shade of the trees, both teams tore into a well contested game.

Lucan dominated the early possession but failed to convert their chances, while BSJ made the most of their chances to take an early lead. The Lucan girls kept their workrate high and were  rewarded with a few scores before h/t to lead by 4 at the break.

In the second half the game was end to end and it took a fantastic defensive effort by Lucan to keep the BSJ girls out. Lucan also missed a few chances of their own at the other end to keep the game tight going into the last 5 minutes, when a Lucan goal looked to have given them some breathing space with a 6 point lead.

BSJ girls had other ideas however, and launched 3 late attacks on goal but more fantastic Lucan defending ensured BSJ only came away with a point from each attack and the Lucan girls held out for a well deserved 3 point win.

Lucan girls put in a fantastic team effort with some wonderful defending throughout, and although we missed some chances in attack Lucan girls kept working & creating chances and were rewarded with our highest score to date, with 8 different girls getting on the scoresheet.

Well done to all girls & special mention also to; Rebecca Mc Grath, Tegan Kelleher & Lauren McGivney who missed this game due to holidays but played a big part in our earlier games. Thanks also to u14s Zara, Grian & Niamh who helped out giving us much needed subs on a very hot day.

Lucan Team: Faye Sutcliffe (1-1),  Aoife Fox, Kerry Leahy, Katie Taaffe, Naoise O'Sullivan, Shauna Rooney, Eve Bruton, Aisling Fitzpatrick (1-0), Siobhan Birnie (1-2), Tara Curran, Caoimhe Costello (0-1), Leah Duffy (1-0), Niamh Doolin, Leah O'Byrne (1-2), Fina Keller (1-1), Niamh Lamon (1-1), Grian Galligan Byrne, Zara Casey Lancaster.

U13A Ladies Football

On Sunday 18th U13A played their last match of the league against Clanna Gael. Both teams were down players due to the holiday season. We agreed to  played 14 aside.

The match was broken into 2 water breaks per half due to the scorching temperatures.

Lucan got off to a great start and scored 1.6 before the 1st water break to Clanna Geal 1point.  At half time there was only 1 point between the teams. The second half was messy with injuries and girls feeling dizzy from the heat and we were down to 12 players for the rest of the match. Lucan stepped up a gear and scored 4 goals and 5 points. The girls were delighted with the win.

Final score Lucan 5.14 to Clanna Gael 4.8

U12 Ladies Football

The U12 Ladies Football team played host to three teams from St. Sylvester’s on a sun kissed AGP1, on Saturday afternoon that was more suited to being on a beach than playing free flowing football.

Despite the searing heat there were some great displays of attacking football across all three pitches with goals flying in across the games with extremely competitive matches all round, and it has been fantastic to see the new joiners to the squad develop over the past few weeks as they have gained their first match experience.
