Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

July 08, 2021

Congratulations to Abby Shiels, named on the Leinster LGFA Team of the LIDL National League 2021.

What a goal! from Chris Crummey, last Saturday, in Croke Park, ensuring the win over Galway and a place in the Leinster SHC for Dublin against Kilkenny. Chris is joined on the panel by Ronan Smith, John Bellew and his brother Paul

Lucan Sarsfields had 3 players out with the Dublin U14 camogie development squads on 26 June. Izzy Cuffe was in Antrim. Chloe O'Shea played against Wexford and Eva Collis played against Kildare, well done girls!!

Well done to the Dublin U20's and Lucans Mark Lavin, who beat Wicklow on Thursday evening to reach the Leinster U20 Semi-finals.

Best of luck to Lucan Sarsfields Finn Bruton who is named on the Dublin minor team to play Offaly on Saturday in the Eirgrid Leinster Minor Football quarter final.

Mixed fortunes for our adult hurlers in the leagues last weekend with the highlights being good wins for the Junior As over St Pats and the Junior Cs defeating Kevin’s, the senior team were unlucky to lose out to Cuala by 2 points, while the Junior B’s lost to a strong Thomas Davis side. In ladies football both junior teams recorded away wins against St Annes and St Finians, while the inters lost at home to Maurs.  Senior camogie took a win at home to Faughs as did the Junior 5’s against Cuala, followed by the Junior 3’s on Tuesday, winning, also against Cuala.  On Monday, an new first as our four minor ladies football teams opened their league campaigns with wins for the B’s and C’s.  All club results and match reports are below.

Congratulations and best wishes to Kevin O’Reilly and his new bride Jaclyn who got married in New York after recently moving there (photo attached). Kevin was one of the most skilful and talented hurlers in Dublin over the past 15 years and certainly among the best to ever to play for Lucan. He was on the minor team that won a first ever ‘A’ championship for the club in 2005 and captured another ‘A’ championship title at U21 in 2008. He was leading scorer for the seniors for over a decade before leading our Junior As to the championship final last year.  We wish him the very best for his new life in the USA and hopefully we will see him back in Lucan and maybe line out in the green and black again at some point.

Please note that dogs are not allowed on the premises of Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club. All teams are asked to inform visiting clubs of this when arranging home fixtures.

All teams are to return club equipment, (flags, nets, etc) to the correct storage area when matches are completed so that the gear is available to the next team. All teams using Pitch 1 and Pitch 2 are to replace the goalmouth protection at the end of the games. Due to the huge demands placed on our facilities at the moment, Home and Visiting teams are asked not to use Pitch 1 or 2 for warmups and drills prior to games.

Closure of Griffeen car-park

Earlier this year, Lucan Sarsfields Senior Hurling ran a Fantasy Golf Teams Competition based on The US Masters.

The competition was very successful, generating much-needed funds to help cover the costs of running our Senior Hurling Team in 2021.

The feedback from entrants in the Competition was also positive and the Competition added greatly to their enjoyment of the Masters. We have decided to run our Fantasy Golf Teams Competition again, this time based on the Open Championship (which takes place Thurs – Sun of next week, July 15 - 18).

This is again a fundraiser for our Senior Hurling team.

Each entrant will select 5 golfers and 1 standby golfer for their team.  There will be a change in the way the prize-winning teams are decided; in this Competition, this will be based on the lowest score achieved by the best 3 players on each team. Entries will cost €10, full details and rules of the competition are here: https://bit.ly/LucanSarsFantasyGolf.

Lucan Sarsfields Golf Society next outing is July 10th at Moyvalley GC. Contact Capt Jack Butler at 087 258 2780, or Seamus Fagan at 086 816 8984 to book your tee-time.

Hurling

AHL5:  Lucan Sarsfields 2-25. St Pats Palmerston 1-9.

This was a very comfortable win for Lucan Junior A’s at AGP. St Pats opened the scoring but Lucan soon got on top and dominated the opening half to lead 1-15 to 1-3 at half time with the goal coming from Emmett Allen.  The second half was little different and an excellently finished goal from CJ Smith had settled the issue long before the end.  Lucan had 10 different scorers including full back Rob Twomey who made a storming run up the field to get the final score of the match.  Clan Canavan was excellent in goals in his first outing at this level, and the backs in front of him were rarely troubled with Gavan Millea and Anto McNulty in the half back line dominant throughout. Oisin O’Brien and Emmet Allen were most impressive in the forwards and the subs introduced also made a positive contribution.  Overall this was a very good performance from a young Lucan second team who now have two wins from two and are competing at the right end of the league table.

Lucan team/ scorers: C Canavan, A Sheehan, R Twomey (0-1), A Lee, G Millea, L Murphy, A McNulty (0-2, 0-1f), B Aird (0-1), E O’Connor, D Kavanagh (0-2), E Allen (1-8, 0-5f), O O’Brien (0-5), C O’Maolmhana, CJ Smyth (1-1), K Masterson (0-2). Subs introduced; I Crowley, D Reynolds, T Swords, E Dowling (0-2), J McCarthy (0-1).

AHL10: Kevins 2-10  Lucan Sarsfields 5-14

Lucan lined out in Dolphins barn on Friday night looking to build on their round one league win. The game had a tentative start with Kevins getting the first scores. These were cancelled out however by a lively Daniel Coogan who found the net after a neat flick to gain possession in the danger zone. Daire Murphy also put over two scores to give Lucan a narrow 1-2 to 0-4 lead after the first quarter. Following the restart, Eoin Power fed Martin O'Shea who fielded excellently, spun and ripped the second goal to the net. Two Kevins scores came next before O'Shea found the net again - this time a more conventional follow-up from the corner forward. Lucan entered a period of dominance but a growing wide-count kept Kevins in the game. They netted themselves but Lucan had enough done to lead 3-9 to 1-8 at halftime.

After the break, Lucan stretched their lead with Coogan again breaking fee to find the net. Kevins goaled again but Lucan led by two goals entering the final quarter. Lucan subs made an impact in the final quarter with Cian Ryan scoring goal No. 5. Lucan were composed to the end and scored five unanswered points to see the game out. Lucan were generally on top with just three scores from placed balls and had ten different scorers but a wide count of 20-10 left room for improvement.

Lucan Team and scorers: J Myler; L Power, D Hussey, M O'Malley; D Lawlor, P Kennedy, C O'Neill; D Murphy (0-3: 0-1f, 0-1 65), E Higgins (0-2); D Quinn (0-1), F Breen (0-1), E Power (0-4); D Coogan (2-0), R Hazley, M O'Shea (2-0); J Brant, S Keegan (0-1f), M Daly (0-1), C Ryan (1-1), R Brant
