Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

October 06, 2020

The GAA, Camogie Association and LGFA Management Committees have endorsed the decision to suspend all Club games at all levels with immediate effect and until further notice. Training will continue to be permitted as per the guidelines outlined for the relevant levels in the Government's National Framework for Living with Covid 19.

Of the games that took place last week, the Ladies Football Juniors completed their league cup campaign with a win in dreadful conditions away to Fingal Ravens on Sunday last, giving them 18 points out of the maximum 21. Normally this would guarantee a semi-final spot, but with games suspended for the time being, we shall wait and see. Both the Mens and Ladies intermediate footballers suffered defeats.

The Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative is coming to Lucan! DEYLI has seen over 600 young GAA members (aged 15-18) complete the yearlong programme, gaining from NUIG a FETAC level 6 third level qualification in Youth Leadership and Community Action for their efforts.

This unique programme evokes and honours the values Dermot Earley epitomised and is designed to foster them in a new generation of young Irish leaders. The programme comprises of three modules, two of which are facilitated, and one is undertaken by the young people independently.

‘Your attitude is more important than your ability, your motives are more important than your methods, your courage is more than your cleverness and always have your heart in the right place’ - Dermot Earley Snr.

The Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative (DEYLI) takes its name from one of Ireland’s most inspirational leaders and one of Gaelic games most iconic proponents, Dermot Earley (1948- 2010).

The initiative, a tribute to Dermot’s lifetime of sporting and professional achievements and his commitment to community service, is brought to life through a partnership between GAA, Foróige, and NUI Galway. The programme empowers young people to enhance their leadership capabilities to better enable them to reach their full potential and have a positive impact on the world around them.

There is a limit of 20 places available on this programme. Please register your interest at the link below.

Sport Ireland and the network of 29 Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) in the country have developed a 4-week physical activity plan for older adults as part of Positive Ageing Week. The resource will support people to reach the minimum of 30 minutes of daily physical activity, as recommended in Ireland’s National Physical Activity Plan. This will help an individual’s strength and confidence in their body, supporting them to be more physically active as well as developing transferable skills for everyday life.

This resource has been developed by Sport Ireland and a working group of LSP Community Sport Development Officers in conjunction with Age & Opportunity.

This resource is fully adaptive for people of all abilities and ages and includes an activity planner to help individuals track their progress throughout the 4 weeks. Simply print out the resource or display it on a phone and be active. For more details please see www.sportireland.ie for more details.
