On Saturday May 16, Lucan Sarsfields hurlers from u14 to senior took part in the ‘Hurl For Hope’ in aid of Pieta House Each player had a target of 2000 strikes, and were able to complete the task while also maintaining social distancing. 25 Years ago, as Lucan Sarsfields were preparing to meet St Vincents in the Intermediate Football Final replay, team captain, Fergus McNulty, featured in a ‘Player Profile’ for the Evening Herald. We caught up with Fergus during the week and asked him to fill it in again, here’s what he said:

  • Name: Fergus McNulty.
  • Living in: Dunboyne, Co Meath
  • Family: Married, thank God! Three children (16, 14, 12) – All big Meath fans!
  • Job: Company Director
  • GAA Sporting hero: Matt Connor, Offaly legend.
  • Magical Match: I was involved in arranging a Dublin v Meath charity game for a friend of mine, Sean Cox, last year. That was a very special day. Darren Gavin from Lucan played midfield that day and had a great game.
  • Fav TV comedy : Veep.
  • Fav Food: Anything that puts the weight on, is usually pretty good.
  • Fav book: There are some great GAA books like ‘Dublin v Kerry’. Jimmy McGuinness’ autobiography is a very good read.
  • Fav Footballer: Con O’Callaghan (Cuala)
  • Best footballer I ever played with: I was lucky to play with some great footballers and clubmen with Lucan like Richie Crean, Mick Casey (snr and junior), Stephen Shaughnessy, Damien O’Brien, Conor Bresnan… but I would have to say Jack Sheedy was the standout player.
  • Favourite Companion if you were stranded on a desert island: It would still have to be Laura, who despite my answer 25 years ago, decided to marry me.
  • Best Match: My favourite Lucan Sarsfield’s moment was winning the Junior A Football Championship in 2005 v St Brigids.
  • Most memorable GAA occasion: My local Club, Dunboyne, won the Ladies All-Ireland Intermediate Final in 2017. I was Club Chairman at the time and that was a pretty memorable day.
  • Biggest influence on my football career: I would have to say my father, Hugh. Unfortunately he passed away last year, and it was only looking back that I appreciated how many Lucan Sarsfield memories I had with him.
  • GAA Transfer Choice: Michael Murphy (Donegal) is a pretty special footballer.
  • Person you most admire: Without a doubt, front line health care workers.
  • Relaxation: Putting the feet up with a pizza still sounds good to me.
  • What would you do if you won the lotto: Keep it quiet!
  • Ambition: Obviously, health, happiness etc, but I would love to see Lucan win a Senior Championship.
  • Pet Hate: People who always point out the problem without putting any thought into the solution.
  • What would you tell the younger version of yourself: Avoid filling in player profiles. They may come back to haunt you!
