Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

November 25, 2019

Due to the wet weather at the weekend, O’Toole Park was waterlogged, resulting in the postponement until Tuesday evening, of the U21A Hurling Championship final against Na Fianna. The U21B Hurlers won their quarter final against Good Council, but lost the semi-final against Naomh Mearnòg. The Minor A and B Camogie semi-finals also fell victim to the weather, no dates available yet. U15 Footballers however won their last game to finish third in the Division 1 league.

Our deepest sympathies to the Connelly family on the recent loss of Pauline's mother, and Laura's grandmother, Shiela Carthy. RIP.

Following the Club’s AGM on Thursday  last, the incoming Executive for 2020.

Adult Hurling

Joe Whyte has announced he is stepping down from the role of Director of Hurling after 4 years in the role. All in adult Hurling would like to thank Joe for his great service and commitment to the development of Hurling in the club. There is now a vacancy to be filled and anyone interested should contact Chairman Mike Bowler.

U21 Hurling ‘C’ Championship Semi-final:

Naomh Mearnòg 2-15 Lucan Sarsfields 0-8.

This game was played in heavy underfoot conditions in Portmarnock but that didn’t prevent the home side putting in a very good display to advance to the final. Lucan started reasonably well but a few early wides allowed Mearnòg build up an early lead which they never relinquished. An early goal had Mearnòg 1-3 to 0-1 ahead after 10 minutes. A second goal shortly before half time effectively settled the issue as Mearnòg led 2-6 to 0-3 at halftime. All of Lucan’s first half scores were pointed frees by Ciaran Keane. Lucan battled gamely in the second half but couldn’t threaten the hosts significant lead and they were comprehensive winners in the end. Ciaran Keane added three more frees and a superb point from a line ball in the second half, and Lucan’s only score from play in the match came from Evan Lombard. Ben O’Toole at centre back was the stand out performer on what was a very young Lucan team, most of whom will feature again next year.

Lucan Sarsfields Juvenile Football Report

Many of the Lucan juvenile football teams are now finished competitive action for the year but there are still some of the CCC2 juvenile teams who had their final football games this weekend

Date                 24th November 2019

Venue              Sancta Maria, Ballyboden

Opposition        Ballyboden St Endas

Competition     U15 A Division 1

Final Score        Lucan Sarsfields 0-14     Ballyboden St Endas 2-07

This was Lucan’s U-15 footballers last league match of a long season and it felt like it, that was until a harsh penalty was awarded to Ballyboden early in the second half. Despite leading for most of the first half, Lucan found themselves down by 1 at half time.  Slow to get going in the second half until that penalty was awarded against Lucan.  What a response.  Six points on the spin without reply and Ballyboden were struggling.  The pressure told with numerous yellow cards and two reds to Ballyboden as Lucan piled on the pressure and as the old maxim states “one point at a time”.  Lucan rounded off the game winning by the solitary score but it was a deserved victory for a panel of 20 lads that have given their heart and soul this season.

Many thanks to parents for their time and assistance throughout the year.  Whilst it was always going to be difficult to match last year, it wasn’t for a lack of trying and each and every player on the panel did themselves justice over the long season.  A break well earned and onto 2020.

Well done to all the teams competing during the week.
