Juvenile Football Report

There was a lot of juvenile football action this weekend in the CCC2 groups.

However, last weekend, the Lucan U-8s began their football journey with an away game against Kilmacud Crokes and a home game against Ballinteer St. Johns.

Date:                     16th February 2019

Opposition:        Ballinteer St Johns (Home); Kilmacud Crokes (Away)

Competition:     u8 Boys Football

The u8 Boys had their first CCC1 football matches last weekend.  One group of 3 teams were at home to Ballinteer St. Johns and the other group of 3 teams were away to Kilmacud Crokes. Both groups got straight into their matches and were very competitive with some good tackling on display and some good passing.  There were some great points scored by the boys, which gave the teams a great boost. The boys all had a great time and are already looking forward to their next matches.

All three Lucan U-13 teams were in grading league games this weekend.

Date: 16/2/2019

Venue: St. Anne’s Park

Opposition: Naomh Barog

Competition: U13 Div 2 Grading

Final Score: Lucan Sarsfields 5-7 Namoh Barog 2-6

This U-13 match was played on a beautiful spring Saturday afternoon in St. Anne’s Park. Lucan started brightly and raced into an early lead from some early goals from Charlie McHugh and Gavin Collins. The game swung from end to end but the Lucan lads began to get on top up until half time with further goals from Louie Fanning and Charlie McHugh, where Lucan held a 10 point lead. This lead increased early in the second half with some great team scores. Naomh Barog did stage a late fight back to narrow the lead but never got close enough to impact the result and Lucan ran out convincing winners.

Squad: Sean Treanor, Chris Hylands, Reece Kelly, Oisin Sharkey, Robert O’Connell, Callum Morris, Aaron Malone, Liam Fitzgerald, Callum Keane, Gavin Collins, Adam Rock, Daire Collis, Charlie McHugh, Louie Fanning, Alex Keegan.

Date: 23 February 2019

Venue: Griffeen Park

Opposition: St Sylvester’s

Competition: Football Grading League Division 6

Final Score: Lucan Sarsfield 4.11 - St Sylvester’s 3.09

A workmanlike performance from Lucan saw them taking up where they left off last week creating a number of scoring chances.  The difference this week was the scoring boots were back on resulting in a first win at the grading level. Half time score saw Lucan trailing by the minimum of 2.03 to 1.05.  Direct ball into the full forward line saw Lucan reap their deserved reward and were economical converting all their chances. Overall a good team effort with solid displays all round.

Squad: Conor Dolan, Shane Dolan, Eoghan O Connor, James Scott, Luke Gibbs, Ryan Feighery, Aaron Cronin, Mark Deignan, Rory Eagan, Dylan Carr, Robert Keher, Gareth McDonnell, Adam Salmon, Ben O Keeffe.

Date: 23/02/19

Venue: Porterstown Park

Opposition: Castleknock

Competition:U13 Football Grading

Final Score: Castleknock C 6-11 – Lucan Sarsfield’s C 5-4

This was a game of 2 half’s. Lucan struggled with the pace of the game and in the first 20 minutes conceded 4.7 to no score. In the last 10 minutes Lucan got some possession ball and kept the play inside the opposition 45m line and scored 3-1. In the second half Lucan were a different team and had most of the possession scoring a further 2-3.with the Lucan goalkeeper saving a penalty. Unfortunately, Lucan allowed Castleknock in for some scores and they converted 2-4.

Squad: M Brennan, C Lawlor, S Wright, D Harrington, D Thomas, J O’Reilly, K O’Connor, H Geoghegan, C Murphy, S Geoghegan, F Haran, J Browne, S Tormey, S Walsh, C Hartigan

The U-14 teams were also in league action this week.

Date: 23/02/19

Venue: Silverpark

Opposition: Kilmacud Crokes

Competition: Division 1 Football League

Final Score: 1-04 to 2-09

Lucan U14A travelled to Kilmacud on Saturday afternoon. The game was played in fine conditions and Crokes started off the match strongly, however were kept at bay by a resolute green backline. Sarsfields opened the scoring with a long range free from Daragh Lyons, but were rocked by two quick goals to give them a huge mountain to climb. However, Lucan finished the half very strongly and helped by a goal from Adam Banim and further points from Daragh Lyons and Cillian Whelan went in trailing by three points 1-03 to 2-03. The second half was a tough defensive half, with a lot of fouling and scores were hard to come by for both sides. Lucan were guilty of a lot of wasted scoring chances but a Sean Langton point kept Lucan in the match up to the last few minutes but Crokes finished strongly with three late points to win on a score-line of 1-04 to 2-09.

Squad: Conor Greally; Sean Carolan, Dan Kane; Ryan Clancy, Cathal Kennedy, Dara Walsh; Daragh Lyons, Darragh O’Toole; Eoin Conheady, Alex Derrien, Cillian Whelan; Darragh Meehan, Adam Banim, Cormac Coffey; Subs Paddy Ryan, Oisin O’Connor.

Scorers: Adam Banim 1-00; Daragh Lyons 0-02; Cillian Whelan 0-01; Sean Langton 0-01

The U-14B footballers had a great win on a score line of Lucan 7:14.  Round Towers Lusk 3:11

This was a very positive performance and played great football. Lucan are enjoying their football but this was a tough game and only for a purple patch in the second half with three fairly quick goals the score could have been much tighter. Lucan were very focused and did a great job on closing the deal with some great scores. This team have had a good start to the season and it gives them a platform to work from for the rest of the year.

Date: 23rd March

Venue: 12th Lock

Opposition: Stars of Erin

Competition: U14 Football Division 10

Final Score: 1-5 to 6-14

This was the opening game of the season for Lucan and they were up against an eleven man Stars of Erin squad who won their game the previous week against O’Tooles by 10-10 to 0-0. Lucan looked somewhat ring rusty as Stars of Erin started strongly, clocking up a 0-0 to 4-2 lead in the first ten minutes. Lucan gradually got themselves back in the game with determined defending by Ronan Munnelly and Cian O’Driscoll, accurate free taking by Sean McGowan and scores from Conor Smullen, Cian Maher ad Ryan Donnelly. Lucan trailed by 1-4 to 5-3 going into the second half. The wind picked up at half time and was blowing into Lucan faces as the second half threw in. Stars of Erin scored a succession of points as Lucan struggled to get the ball up the field. Goalkeeper Sean Kearney was on top of his game and his efforts in particular along with a solid full back performance by Ryan Donnelly restricted the opposition to one goal in the second half.

Squad: Sean Kearney, Ronan Munnelly, Cian O’Driscoll, Sean McGowan, James Kearney, Jasper Nolan, Conor Smullen, Callum Normn, Alex Keegan, Daniel Mahon, Daniel Byrne and Cian Maher

Scorers: C. Maher 1-0, R. Donnelly 0-2 (1 f), C. Smullen 0-1, C. O’Driscoll 0-1, A. Keegan 0-1 (f)

Both U-15 teams were also in league action.

Date                      24th February 2019

Venue                  Juvenile Pitch

Opposition          Kilmacud Crokes

Competition       U15 Division 1

Final Score          Lucan 1-09 / Kilmacud Crokes 2-05

On the last Sunday before the footballers take a well earned rest, out U15s produced their best form of the league campaign thus far. Lucan entered the game on the back of an excellent performance last week.  The tackling was tough but the football was excellent yet Lucan coughed up 1-03 in the first half as the lads gave away some possession in the last 10 minutes of the half.  However, they finished strong to bring the deficit back to four points. The lads knew the first 10 minutes were crucial  and they responded with 1-03 of their own. Kilmacud fought back and they responded with 1-01, however Lucan were determined not to let this one slip and they responded with four brilliant points to put Lucan one point ahead with five minutes remaining. A Kilmacud equalizer spurred the lads on further as a booming long range free took the lads into the lead with little left on the clock.  Lucan saw the remaining few attacks from Kilmacud out recording an excellent victory by the smallest of margins.

Squad: Cathal Doody, Jack Doyle, Eoin Kilduff, Joey McSweeney, Alex Hickey, Finn Bruton, Zach Delmar, Jamie Smith, Jack Behan, Conor Hylands, Conor Sheary, Rian Fortune, Michael Cunningham, Gareth Kennedy, Charlie Mulqueen, Colin Duffy, David Mulqueen, Rossa Daly, Joey Dunne, Luca Kavanagh (injured)

Scorers: Rian Fortune (0-04), Conor Hylands (1-00), Conor Sheary (0-03), Davy Mulqueen (0-01), Jack Behan (0-01).

In the U-15 Division 7 league, Lucan lost out to St. Peregrines on a score line of 4-10 to 2-06.

The Lucan U-16 footballers were also in league action this weekend.

Date:                                     23rd February, 2019

Venue:                                 Loreto Park

Opposition:                        Ballinteer St Johns

Competition:                     U16 Football Division 2

Final Score:                         Ballinteer St Johns 3-10 - Lucan Sarsfields 0-13

Match Report: This game was ultimately decided in the first half as Ballinteer scored a couple of early goals, after that it was point for point for the whole match.Lucan showed great character to come back from the early goals conceded, especially in the second half, and outplayed Ballinteer for large periods.

Considering Lucan were missing a few players from the panel, we could not fault the players effort and played some great team football which resulted in some fantastic scores from play.

Squad – Cathal Doody, Neil O’leary, Aidan Sheary, Cillian Morrissey, Stephen Ramsay, Rian Carey, Jamie Lavin, Ciarán Scully, Jack O’Donnell, Sam Noctor, Tony Mulqueen, Jack Lawlor, Hugh Cuffe, Matthew Coogan, Louis Butler, Brendan Kavanagh.

Well done to all the teams competing at the weekend.

Adult Hurling Report

Our three adult teams were in action this weekend in the opening round of the Leagues, and all three had away fixtures. On Friday evening, the Seniors travelled to UCD to play Cuala and lost out by two points in a very competitive encounter. On Sunday, the Junior As played St Finians of Swords which ended in a draw, while the performance of the week came from the Junior B’s who had a comprehensive win over Ballinteer St Johns. See Match reports below.

Next weekend it’s the turn of the minor teams again with the minor A’s away to Oliver Plunketts and Minor B’s at home to Ballyboden. Both due to throw in at 11am on Sunday morning.

Congratulations to Fintan Clandillon and Aishling Clarke who got married on Saturday. Fintan has been a great stalwart of Lucan and Dublin hurling over many years.

AHL1: Cuala 1-15 Lucan Sarsfields 0-16.

Lucan seniors lost out by a narrow margin in this well contested opening round league match played under lights at UCD. Cuala started the better and got through for an early goal to establish a 4 point lead that proved decisive at the end. Lucan settled in to the game and fought back to narrow the gap to just 2 at half time, 1-7 to 0-8. The Lucan scores coming from Kevin O’Reilly (0-5f) and points from play from Donal Flannery, Kevin Fitzgerald and Ronan Smith. The early stages of the second half saw Lucan play their best hurling as they gradually eliminated the deficit and edged ahead by 2 points mid-way through the half. Cuala came again and it was tit for tat to the finish. Cuala got enough opportunities from frees to edge it by 2 points at the end. The Lucan scoring pattern was the same as the first half, with further contributions from O’Reilly (0-5f), Flannery, Fitzgerald and Smith. There were a lot of positives in this performance from a Lucan perspective, including the fact that three players from the 2018 minor ranks got a first taste of action at this level. After a shaky start the defence settled well and restricted Cuala to few scoring chances from play. However, Lucan were too reliant on the placed ball skills of Kevin O’Reilly for scores at the other end, and never threatened the Cuala goal.

Lucan Team/Scorers: C Murray, P Smith, P Rigney, J Bellew, R Stapleton, M McCaffrey, G Millea, J McCaffrey, R Smith (0-2), R Ward, K Fitzgerald (0-2), D Flannery (0-2), K O’Reilly (0-10f), P Kelly, P Crummey. Subs introduced: A McNulty, C McHugh.

AHL5: St Finians (S) 2-7 Lucan Sarsfields 0-13.

Lucan Junior A’s lead for most of this game and were denied an opening round victory by a last minute goal from the hosts. It will feel like a point lost, but in truth a draw was probably a fair result as Finians created more than enough chances but errant shooting let Lucan off the hook. Lucan got the opening score from Rory Stapleton (‘65) but Finians responded with a goal at the other end. Lucan fought back and began to dominate with the aid of the breeze and some good long range frees from Stapleton and a couple from play from Cian McHugh and Cillian Hogan had Lucan 2 ahead at the break, 0-7 to 1-2. Lucan started the second half on top and had built up a six point lead mid-way through the half and looked set to prevail as Finians continued to mount up the wides. Finians began to dominate in the closing stages and eventually found their range to reduce the deficit to three points, before that late strike at goal snatched a draw at the death. This was a young Lucan team with many of last year’s minors involved and overall they acquitted themselves very well.

Lucan team/Scorers: D O’Neill, A Sheehan, E O’Connor, T Swords, P O’Connor, R Stapleton (0-5, 0-4f, 0-1’65), A Lee, I Crowley, A McNulty, E Connolly, C McHugh (0-4, 0-2f), O O’Brien (0-2), D Kavanagh, R Lambert, C Hogan (0-1). Subs introduced: E Kenny (0-1), C O’Maolmhána, E Higgins.

AHL8: Ballinteer St Johns 0-12 Lucan Sarsfields 3-18.

Lucan Junior B’S started their competitive season with a comprehensive win over Ballinteer. Lucan lead all the way through and dominated for most of the game. The accuracy of Ciaran Keane from both frees and play and good scores from Killian Boylan and Evan Lombard contributed to a 5 point lead at half time, 0-10 to 0-5. Lucan stretched the lead to 7 early in the second half but then Ballinteer had a short purple patch and reduced to deficit to 4 points. However, the depth of Lucan’s panel was evident as two substitutes combined to get a vital goal. Eanna Kyne got on the end of a good line ball from Eoghan Gately and finished to the net to stop any temporary resurgence from the hosts. Shortly after, Evan Lombard cut through and finished to the net to effectively seal the issue. A further goal from Ciaran Keane put the icing on the cake late on, as Lucan ran out comfortable winners. This was a good team performance with young Luke Finnerty very steady in goals, well protected behind an experienced full back line of Stevie Farrell, Ian Fitzgerald and Sean Stapleton. Lucan’s youthful energy further up the field was put to good effect with the half forward line of Boylan, Lombard and Keane particularly impressive.

Lucan Team/Scorers: L Finnerty, S Stapleton, S Farrell, I Fitzgerald, J O’Connor, P Fagan, P Keane, S Donohue (0-2), D Ryan (0-1), K Boylan (0-2), E Lombard (1-2), C Keane (1-11, 0-8f), R Ward, D Parsons, S Keegan. Subs introduced: E Gately, E Kyne (1-0), M Condon, T Heffernan, D Twomey.
