Hurling Match Reports

October 29, 2017

All roads lead to O'Toole Park next Sunday morning for the County Minor A Hurling Championship Final as Lucan take on Na Fianna. Lucan are looking to bridge a 12 year gap and win this title for just the second time. Throw in is at 11am and all support greatly appreciated.

There was action this weekend for seniors and Under 21's. Seniors had a good win over Ballinteer in the league and will now contest the promotion playoffs, while the U21's lost out to a very strong Na Fianna team in the championship. Match reports below.

U21 A Hurling Championship: Na Fianna 2-14 Lucan Sarsfields 2-6.
This was expected to be a tough ask for a Lucan team who were somewhat depleted with injuries and minors unavailable, against a Na Fianna side that had the pick of three minor championship winning teams. And that is how things turned out as Na Fianna came out on top. However Lucan put in a very committed performance and made Na Fianna work hard for their win.
Na Fianna had the elements in their favour in the first half and quickly took advantage with some nice scores and by half time lead 1-12 to 0-3.  Lucan fought back well in the second half and had an early goal from a Ciaran Dowling free.  Lucan held Na Fianna to just 3 scores in the second half but didn't get enough scores of their own to really exert pressure on the scoreboard. A second goal from a free from Dowling narrowed the gap further but it was too late as time ran out on Lucan. Despite defeat, it was a very spirited performance from Lucan and every player fought hard for the cause. Colm Keenan was very good in goals before a premature departure, as was his replacement Peter Fagan who saved a penalty with his first touch. Aidan Sheehan was very effective in a solid defence. Ronan Smith showed great strength and leadership while Rory Stapleton worked hard throughout. Ciaran Dowling lead the way with scores from play and placed balls while Paul Crummey won some good possession against a big Na Fianna defence.
Lucan Team/Scores: C Keenan, P Claffey, P Rigney, D Reynolds, R Twomey, A Sheehan, S Kelly, T Beahan, R Smith (0-1), R Stapleton, C Dowling (2-5, 2-3f), P Crummey, C O'Maolmhána, CJ Smith, E Lombard. Subs introduced: D Flannery, P Fagan, P Murtagh.

AHL2 Lucan Sarsfields 2-14 Ballinteer St Johns 1-9.
Lucan seniors put the championship trauma of last week behind them with a solid performance and comfortable league win over BSJ and now progress to the promotion playoffs. Ballinteer started well and had an early goal but Lucan gradually took control with a goal from Aidan Roche and some good points from Matt McCaffrey from play and Tommy Somers from frees. A second goal from a penalty expertly dispatched by Somers had Lucan in from 2-8 to 1-5 at half time. The second half was low scoring but Lucan were always in control and extended the lead to 8 points by full-time.  Kevin Roche was very solid in goal behind a very good Lucan defence. Matt McCaffrey was outstanding in midfield while Aidan Roche, Peter Kelly and CJ Smith were busiest upfront.
