Senior Football

Last week saw a double header for the senior footballers, visiting Somerton on Wednesday for a clash with Castleknock, followed by the visit of Ballinteer to the 12th Lock on Saturday evening.

First impressions proved impressive in Wednesday's clash with our affluent neighbours from Fingal. Reaching the half time break with a 5 point lead thanks to a goal from Luke Curran and a heap of points from the ageless wonder Brendan Gallagher, it looked like the hard work was done. Perhaps the lads thought that too as the second half brought with it completely contrasting fortunes from those enjoyed during the first half hour. As Westmeath import Tommy McDaniels began to leave his mark on the game for the home side, the Lucan men failed to capitalize on a plethora of second half chances. Ultimately, the game ended in a four point defeat, a late penalty putting a bit of gloss on the scoreline for the home side. Speaking after the game, selector Niall O Keefe indicated that there would need to be, "a lot of soul-searching ahead of Saturday night".

Saturday night brought with it a much needed win for Lucan. The restoration of Mark Gibbons and John McCormack to the starting team greatly increased the average age of the team, and perhaps this was reflected in a more mature performance. Moved out to centre back, Daire Newcombe found himself under less pressure than Wednesday night, as Darren Gavin dominated in midfield. The spritely Harry Ladd was forever busy upfront, even if one of his attempts on goal crept out for a line ball. Speaking to reporters after the game, Coach Ollie Collins was in a philosophical mood, emphasizing that his charges were still very much a work in progress.

Ladies Football

Minor Ladies Football Division 5b

Crumlin GAA 4-6, Lucan Sarsfields B 4-7 July 12th, 19:30 at Pearse Park

Following the previous weeks home win against Ballyboden, the Lucan Minor B's travelled to Pearse Park on a warm evening to face Crumlins first time and sole minor Ladies Football team. Although missing a number of the squad due to work commitments, holidays and to county camogie panels, the ranks were filled by some determined U16 players. The first half got off to a bright start with some great defensive work by Katie Maguire, Robyn Casey, Eabha Lillis, Erica Collins, Rachel Bracken and Erin Jones, who all worked hard to clear the ball to the midfield unit of Millie Hughes and Erins sister, Kerrie. Sars forwards used the ball well, Maria Furmanik scoring a penalty,  and despite a few wides had put up 3-4 to Crumlins 2-3 at the end of the half.

Despite the 4 point advantage, Crumlin, a tough physical team, were able to press harder during the second half, and used their substitutions well. Lucan without the luxury of subs, coped well with a few positional changes. Aoibheann Stokes and Caoimhe Keller put in great runs, splitting Crumlins defence on a number of occasions. Captain Chloe Beirne led by example, while playing in the forward line could be found supporting the back line when required, Erin Jones picked out a great score, and was causing Crumlin to concede frees almost every time she got the ball. After the second water break, although tiring, Lucan never gave up, Sadhbh Murray and Megan O'Leary worked tirelessly, Rhian Hawkins in goal, making her minor debut, pushed a penalty save over the bar, to prevent Crumlin taking the lead, as fresh legs helped them narrow the difference. Both teams went to 14 a side, when Caoimhe Keller picked up an injury, and in a nailbiting finish, Lucan hung on to take a well deserved win.

Lucan Sarsfields team: Rhiann Hawkins, Erica Collins, Katie Maguire, Eabha Lillis, Rachel Bracken, Robyn Casey, Erin Jones, Millie hughes, Kerrie Jones, Caoimhe Keller, Aoibheann Stokes, Maria Furmaniak, Chloe Beirne (capt.), Sadhbh Ni Mhuiri, Megan O'Leary
