Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

January 05, 2021

Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh

A Very Happy New Year to all members and supporters, and despite the current pandemic situation, we know it will pass and everything will return to normal at some point.

The GAA have issued the following statement: Given the current exceptional rise in infection rates of Covid-19 and the increased risk of community transmission, the GAA has taken the decision that there will be no collective training permitted for inter-county teams for at least the remainder of the month of January. In addition, Club and County gyms must stay closed until further notice. As previously advised, and under the current Government Regulations in both jurisdictions, neither training nor games are permitted at club level currently.

Accordingly: All areas of the club and club grounds are closed and off limits to everyone, except for those involved in essential maintenance. Remember the HSE is asking everyone in Ireland to stay at home, and to effectively act like they have COVID-19.  This is in response to the very high rates of positive tests seen over recent days, and the widespread increase in infections in our communities nationwide.

Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club have applied for planning permission to construct a new Hurling Wall facility in the area behind pitch 1 at the scoreboard end. We expect a decision by 23 February 2021.

The Club are seeking volunteers from our club membership that have specific skills to provide advice and assistance, in particular those with knowledge and training in Video Recording/Editing, Statistical Sports Analysis, Public Relations. This may be of interest and benefit to those on relevant undergraduate programs. For more information or to apply in confidence, please email pro.lucansarsfields.dublin@gaa.ie

An bhfuil Gaeilge agat? An bhfuil suim agat píosa nuacht gearr nó rud beag suimiúil a scríobh nó a aistriú gach mí? Táim ag cur coiste beag le chéile ionas go mbeidh níos mó gaeilge le feiceáil agus le foghlaim inár nuachtlitir.  Bí i dteagmhail liom má tá!

Do you have Irish? Would you be interested in translating or writing a short news piece or an item of interest each month? I'm putting together a small committee so that our readers can see and learn more Irish from our newsletter.  If so, get in contact!

Lucan Healthy Club in association with our main Club Partner, Supervalu Lucan, are offering a volunteer led shopping delivery service to assist the elderly and the most vulnerable within our community. This service will be live this week. If you can help or need more details please email lucanhealthyclub@gmail.com with your name, mobile number and team.

How it Works:

  • Text SuperValu (0858760119) to request a volunteer member from Lucan Sarsfields to phone them and take their grocery order by 10am the next day. (Customers should text between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday only).
  • Lucan Healthy Clubs will phone a volunteer with the contact details for the elderly/vulnerable customer.
  • Our volunteer (aged between 18 and 59) will contact them by phone and take their grocery order.
  • Our volunteer will do their shopping as per the order and will receive priority access to SuperValu and a special checkout service will be set up.
  • Payment will be taken over the phone by SuperValu staff via card (or a special cash arrangement)
  • Our volunteer will deliver to the customer’s front door (no contact) in cardboard boxes provided by the store.

We are conscious at the moment of the toll the continued Covid crisis has had on our mental health and in particular on the mental health of our young people.  Please find below some useful links:

The Mental health awareness for parents course was developed by Jigsaw and is proudly endorsed by ESCI – Education Support Centres Ireland. Taking this 30 minute course will help you identify ways to support youth mental health. It also highlights how we can all be ‘One Good Adults’ for the young people in our lives.

One Good Coach online course: this is an online 40 minute course aimed at adults who coach or train young people in the GAA. https://learning.gaa.ie/courses/OneGoodCoach/#/

Minding Your Wellbeing Programme:  Brought to you by HSE Health and Wellbeing, this evidence-based programme provides a unique opportunity for people to learn more about mindfulness, gratitude, self-care and resilience. https://www2.hse.ie/healthy-you/minding-your-wellbeing-programme.html

One of the articles in the December GAA club newsletter mentions the new Green Club initiative. 45 clubs across the country will be in phase one starting the roll out that will eventually move across the country. Lucan Sarsfields will be one of the pilot phase one participants. Our Healthy Club group will be taking the lead on organisation, but obviously it won't succeed without participation from across the club and if anyone has contacts that would help with this (our initial strand is on waste management), please email lucanhealthyclub@gmail.com.
