Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club Notes

August 13, 2019

Senior Hurlers had a good win vs St Brigids on Saturday, and can avoid the relegation match with a win vs Crumlin on Wednesday week the 24th of August, if St Judes don’t pick up any points vs Craobh Chiarain tonight. And it was great to see our U8 hurlers up supporting the Senior hurlers. Well done to the Minor football team who were awarded the Herald/AIG team of the Month award. Well done also to the Dublin Senior football team and our own Darren Gavin as he prepares for a massive All Ireland Final vs Kerry. Well done to also to Rebecca McGrath, Siobhan Birnie and Leah O'byrne who were with the Dublin u13 development squad girls. They played 2 Kerry teams and Limerick today and won all three games.Great play from all the Dublin girls and Lucan Sarsfields was well represented. And Best of Luck to the Dublin Ladies Senior Football team and our own Abbey Shiels, Ken Robinson and Paul Casey part of the squad and backroom team, a massive game against Cork this weekend.

Adult Hurling Report

An important weekend for our adult Hurlers as the leagues come towards a conclusion, and the outcome was a good win for the seniors, a narrow 1 point defeat for Junior A's and two league points for the Junior B's courtesy of a walkover from Setanta. This leaves both the seniors and Junior As battling to avoid relegation, and the Junior B's pushing for a promotion playoff. Match reports below.

AHL1 St Brigids 0-9 Lucan Sarsfields 1-19.
Lucan seniors recorded their most comfortable competitive win of the year in this crucial penultimate round league game. The win leaves Lucan with a chance of avoiding the relegation play-off, with one regular game to play. Lucan started quite well but some early wides allowed Brigids stay in touch and the sides were level at 0-3 each after 10 minutes. Lucan began to find their range and gradually exerted dominance on the scoreboard, stretching to lead by 6 points, 0-11 to 0-5 at half time. The start of the second half was more evenly contested and Lucan led 0-14 to 0-9 after 45 mins. Lucan then had a good opportunity to extend their lead but a Ben Coffey penalty was well saved by the Brigids keeper. Lucan did stretch the lead further into the final quarter and a well taken goal from substitute Eoghan O'Conghaile settled the issue with 5 minutes remaining. Brigids failed to score in that final quarter and Lucan were very comfortable winners in the end. Overall it was a good Team performance. Peter Kelly looked more at home at full back with John Bellew very solid at no. 6, with Seanie McClellabd showing some great flashes beside him. The McCaffrey brothers were in top at midfield with Johnny in particular leading the way. Ben Coffey and the Crummey brothers were most prominent in the forward line.

Lucan team/scorers: C Murray, M May, P Kelly, P Smith, R Ward, J Bellew, S McClelland (0-1), J McCaffrey (0-1), M McCaffrey (0-1), B Coffey (0-8f), C Crummey, R Smith, P Crummey (0-3), K Fitzgerald (0-2), D Flannery (0-2). Subs introduced: M Dunne (0-1), E O'Conghaile (1-0), C McHugh.

AHL5 Realt Dearg 2-16. Lucan Sarsfields 2-15.
Lucan Junior A's once again came out the wrong side of a very closely contested encounter, having been in a winning position earlier in the second half. Lucan lead 1-9 to 0-8 at half time, courtesy of a nicely finished goal from Eoin Kenny and very accurate free taking by Tommy Somers. Another goal from Kenny had Lucan leading by 8, 2-11 to 0-9 after 40 mins. However Realt Dearg came storming back and lead by 2-15 to 2-12 after 55 minutes. Lucan fought their way back and eventually equalised through another Somers free five minutes into injury time. A sharing of the spoils looked likely but Realt Dearg broke down the field to snatch a late winner in the 67th minute. Lucan will be disappointed not to get something from this game and probably deserved to do so. However, some inexperience at times and being too reliant on frees for scores proved their undoing.
Lucan team/scorers: K Roche, K Masterson, T Clandillon, D Kavanagh, P O'Carroll, R Lambert, I Crowley, J Byrne (0-1), O O'Brien, T Somers (0-11, 0-10f 0-1 '65), P Ward, A O'Neill, A Lee, A Carroll (0-1), E Kenny (2-2). Subs introduced; P Kennedy, C Behan, F Clandillon, E Connolly.
