Adult Hurling Report

Disappointment for Lucan’s Under 21 hurlers as both A and B teams bowed out of the Championship in their opening quarter-final games.  The A’s were very unfortunate to lose out by a point to St Vincents after a great second half come back, while the B’s went down by 7 to Wild Geese.  Highlight of the week was a great win for Minor B’s in the Championship semi-final, and they now progress to meet Commercials in the final.  Match Reports below.  Best of luck to our Junior B’s who play Championship semi-final away to St Pats of Donabate next Sunday, at 2.30pm.

Under 21 ‘A’ Championship Q’Final: Lucan Sarsfields 1-18  St Vincents 4-10.

This game was played in near perfect conditions at the 12th Lock with the pitch in great condition in the autumnal sunshine.  It was Lucan who started the better and created some early chances but failed to capitalise on them.  Vincents then got into the game and soon got on top, and with the help of a goal from long distance, they held a 4 point lead at half time, 1-7 to 0-6.  Lucan had lost key forward Ciaran Dowling to injury early on which didn’t help their cause.  It wasn’t a vintage first half by any means but the second half proved much more dramatic.  Vincents got a second goal early in the half and extended the lead to eight points and looked on course for a comfortable win.  Then a long delivery from Luke Walsh found the net and gave Lucan a life-line.  That was short-lived however as some hesitancy in the Lucan defence allowed Vincents in for a third goal.  That looked like being the decisive score but Lucan refused to give up and responded with some great hurling and a series of points in a dominant 15 minutes that saw them eliminate the deficit and finally take the lead with a 5 minutes to go.  They held a two point lead into the final minute when Vincents got a free about 30m out.   Vincents went for the goal and the low shot found the corner of the net off a Lucan hurl.  Lucan would have expected 4 or 5 minutes additional time but the referee decided otherwise and promptly blew the final whistle and Lucan were denied in the cruellest fashion.  This was a game Lucan didn’t deserve to lose and their great second half comeback was a heroic effort but ultimately the old adage of “goals win games” proved true once again.  Donal Flannery and Luke Walsh were the outstanding performers for Lucan, with minor player Anto McNulty also putting in a great hour in his first game at this level.

Lucan team/scorers:  D O’Neill, P Claffey, P Rigney, D Reynolds, R Stapleton, L Walsh (1-0), A McNulty, B Coffey (0-2), R Ward, E Allen (0-3), D Flannery (0-10, 0-8f), C Dowling, C Smith (0-2), P Crummey (0-1), E Lombard.  Subs introduced: A Carroll, E Seery, C O’Máolmhána.

Under 21 ‘C’ Championship: Wild Geese 3-15  Lucan Sarsfields 2-11.

Lucan U21B’s travelled to Oldtown with just the bare 15 players for their opening game in the competition and it proved to be a journey too far.  Lucan had a good start and took advantage of the breeze with David Kavanagh opening the scoring with an early goal.  Lucan continued to be the better team with Oisin O'Brien setting up Killian Boylan for a second goal and at half time, Lucan were ahead 2-7 to 0-5 and were fairly comfortable.

Wild Geese upped their game on the restart and converted two more frees to a point from Ciaran Keane. The Geese went on to dominate and whilst their next five efforts were wide, they subsequently got an unanswered 2-5 to go into a three point lead which they never relinquished. Nathan Browne went off injured so Lucan played the last quarter with just 14 men. The free man and coming out on the wrong side of a 21-7 free count mitigated against any hope of a Lucan comeback.

Lucan Team/Scorers: L Finnerty; P Murtagh, E Reynolds, E Higgins; D Kelly, D Reid, I Crowley; P Fagan, A Finnerty; C Keane 0-8 (0-3f), D Kavanagh 1-1, O O'Brien 0-1; K Boylan 1-1, E Kyne, N Browne.

Minor ‘D’ Hurling Championship Semi-final: Lucan Sarsfields 3-19  Na Fianna 4-9.

Lucan’s Minor B hurlers produced an outstanding finish at the end of normal time to force extra time in this very competitive semi final against Na Fianna. They grabbed that extra time opportunity with both hands and drove on for a well deserved victory.    Lucan had a slow start to the game and got into their stride with a good 8th minute Alex Hanley point from a free after a great Mark Gormley run out of defence. A minute later, a typical strong run by Cathal Shanahan produced a great point with a load of Na Fianna backs left in his shadow.    Eoin Gormley playing a defensive midfield role, cleared a lot of ball in the first half, linking up with brother Mark on a few occasions. Daire Murphy again proved to be a solid striker from long distance frees and forced the Na Fianna goalie into a mistake in the 26th minute when the ball ended in the net. Evan Dowling pointed a free in the last puck of the first half and Lucan went in 1-4 to 0-5 ahead at half time.  Manager, Eoghan Gately asked for more intensity in the second half and also made a few changes.  Eoin Power made a difference, won the ball, drove forward and earned a free which Dowling drove over the black spot. Jake Mooney made a point blank save after 7 mins into the second half and cleared his line. However Na Fianna struck a purple patch scoring 2-1 in a 5 minute spell.  Solid battling from Mark Daly earned another free, pointed by Dowling from 60 yards.  Shanno was fouled a minute later, with the same result.  Alex Hanley picked the sliothar from a forest of yellow jerseys and carried the ball on a great run until fouled.  Dowling again pointed the free.  Great clearances from Fintan Ward and Cian Duffy gave quality ball to the forwards who continued to drive at Na Fianna, earning free after free. Charlie Casely, Jack McCarthy and Eoin Power doing the damage. With 10 mins to go, Jake pulled off a great save, which appeared to have been deflected out for a 65, but the referee awarded a point.  A goal followed for Na Fianna which gave them a 4 point lead on the 25 minute mark. However, showing great courage and no shortage of self-belief, Lucan clawed back the 4 point deficit to level the scores by the end of normal time, Lucan 1-13  Na Fianna 3-7.  The equalising score came from a well converted free by Evan Dowling from 50 yards out, near the side-line and into a stiff breeze.

Lucan started strongly in the first period of Extra Time, with Charlie Casely pouncing onto a great delivery by Evan Dowling, to find the net.  Two more pointed frees won and converted by Dowling soon followed giving Lucan a commanding position. However Na Fianna were not going to go away so easily.  Jake saved from a free but Na Fianna scored a goal from the re-bound, followed by a pointed free leaving Lucan 1-2 to 1-1 ahead at the extra time break. The second period was owned by Lucan. After gutsy work by Alex Hanley and Charlie Casely drew frees, converted by the ever reliable Evan Dowling, Lucan took a firm hold of the match. Eoin Power, did the hard work and was rewarded by a goal, struck to the corner with his right boot.  Along the side line, near the local supporters, Jack McCarthy popped up with a delightful point to see out a memorable victory.  This was undoubtedly a team performance by Lucan with all 21 players making a contribution over 90 minutes of a very competitive hurling match. Jake Mooney set the example with bravery and great shot stopping.  He was well protected by his full back line of Daniel, Fintan and Niall. Cian, Mark and Daire hurled a lot of great deliveries into the forwards and never stood back from their task. Declan Lawlor and Pearse Farrell did their job when introduced. Eoin and Cathal were the midfield engines that never stood still. In the forwards, Cormac Sharkey, Jack Butler and Cathal Kavanagh put in solid shifts, while Mark Daly, Alex Hanley, Liam O’Connor, Charlie Casely, Eoin Power and Jack McCarthy proved a handful all day for the Na Fianna backs, causing free and free. Evan Dowling, nailing that last puck free in normal time, capped off a great team performance as Lucan now look forward to the final in two weeks time.
