Juvenile Football Report

A lot of action across both the CCC1 and CCC2 groups this weekend.

Special mention to the U-10 footballers and their mentors who braved the elements to come down and support the senior footballers on Saturday v St. Sylvesters. They got to warm up with the team, form a guard of honour and then play a mini game at half time. The enjoyed the experience and fully deserved their goodie bags at the end. Well done boys.

The under 8 boys played football against Geraldine Moran’s in AGP0, on a very wet morning.

It was a massive performance from the team one boys performing well in both of their games. The training is paying off with an excellent display of kicking fielding passing & scoring. Special mention to Ronan Kelly for playing for Geraldines in the first match finishing as their top scorer.

Well done all round to Daithi, Matthew, Reese, Daire, Cormac, Liam, Ronan, Matthew and Samuel.

Team 2  also played a blinder.  Great tackles by all players when playing in defence and some great scores.

There was also a fantastic performance by every single player for boys under 8’s team 3 today. Everyone did their job and put in a lot of hard work, no matter where they were asked to play. Impossible to pick out any players, every single one was man of the match. The hand passing and foot passing was like watching the Dubs cut through teams.

On Saturday, the U-9s were away to Ballinteer St. Johns and Templogue Synge Street. Some great performances by the boys and the training is really paying off.

The day of Dublin u10's medal blitz coincided with an extremely wet Saturday. The Green squads blitz was cancelled by their hosts, but the blitz which included Black Squad was in Lucan and was going ahead, no matter what the weather!

Players from Ranelagh Gaels and Cuala GAA also came in numbers and despite the weather continually worsening, there was some great skills demonstrated. 12 mini matches were played in total with Lucan dominant in all their games, so we had a very happy crew.

The treats provided to all the boys afterwards by the Lucan parents went down a storm and there were lots of compliments from the other clubs for the whole event. Na Sáirséalaigh Abu!

Both groups of U-11 footballers were at home, one at the club and the other in AGP. The first group played Round Towers Lusk and played really well on the day and showed no little skill in the difficult conditions.

The other group played three very competitive games versus St. Vincents. Again, these games were played in great spirit and some great exchanges and scores were seen in all of the games. Team and scorers below.

Team 1:

E Flynn, M Byrne, C Reilly, D Horan, G Lynch, D Taffe, K Costello (1-3), M O'Brien (1-2), C McCormick (0-1), O Brennan (3-0), L Whelan (4-1)

In the U-12 Division 2, Lucan continued their recent good form with a win over St. Vincents. Lucan started the game strongly and scored some good goals and points. Vincents came back into the game at the start of the second half but another strong finish saw Lucan win out on a score line of 3-09 to 2-06.

In Division 5, Lucan played Clanna Gael Fontenoy away from home and lost out narrowly on a score line of 1-05 to 0-03.

In Division 9, Lucan U-12s finished third in the league after winning against St. Judes on a score line of  1.5 to 0.3 on a very wet Saturday morning.  It was one of the few occasions where Lucan had a full panel to pick from  The score line could have been higher for Lucan but a great performance to finish the season off in style.

Team , M Brennan, S Wright, O Corry, D Harrington, D Thomas, E Walsh, S and H Geoghegan, J Browne, C Hartigan, KOConnor, R Egan, C Lawlor, F Haran, S Walsh, S Tormey.

The U13A footballers maintained their good run of form with a win away to St. Jude’s on Saturday afternoon. The game was played in very wet conditions at St. Paul’s School. Lucan played against the breeze in the first half and after a slow start began to find their feet and gradually took control of the game. Playing against a defensive Jude’s setup Lucan adapted well and started to pick of scores. By half time they led 6-02 to 0-00. The second half continued in the same way but slippery underfoot conditions meant scores were hard to come by. Cathal Kennedy won and scored a penalty to get the scoreboard ticking over again. St Jude’s scored two late consolation goals. The final score was Lucan 9-06 to St Jude’s 2-00 which means Sarsfields remain in third place in Division 1.

Team:  Conor Greally; Eoin Conheady, Darragh O’Toole, Sean Carolan; Dan Kane, Seanie Langton, Dara Walsh; Daragh Lyons, Ryan Clancy; Liam Brennan (1-01), Cathal Kennedy(3-03, 1 pen, 3 frees), Oisin O’Connor (2-00); Alex Derrien, Adam Burns (1-01), Adam Banim (1-1); Sub used: Paddy Ryan (1-00)

The U13B team had a good win against Trinity Gaels in AGP on Saturday on a scoreline of 5-14 to 2-07. The game was played in pretty terrible conditions but the lads showed great skills throughout the game with their handling particularly impressive. Gaels brought a lot of physicality to the game but the lads withstood their challenges and kept their heads and focussed on their football throughout the game.

The support play was superb with players having plenty of options to move the ball on to a teammate and this was illustrated when Calum Conway and Josh Murphy worked the ball upfield from the full back line with Kevin Hegarty finishing the move with a fine finish for a goal and the score of the game.

The whole team played well but in particular Kevin Gormley, Darragh Meehan, Joshua Delaney and Sean Corry who bagged 2-2 in the unfamiliar position of full forward.

Team; Lee Murphy, Josh Murphy, Calum Conway, Killian Gormley, Kevin Gormley, Dillon Ryan, Daragh Kenna, Darragh Meehan (1-3), Ben Armstrong (0-2), Kevin Hegarty (1-3), Joshua Delaney (1-2), Ryan Dunne (0-2), Oran Smith (0-1), Sean Corry (2-2), Ross Murray, Aidan Barry

In the U-13 football league Division 10 Top 4, Lucan received a walk over from Naomh Barrog B.

In U-14 Division 1, Lucan lost out to Kilmacud Crokes on a score line of 4-07 to 3-04.

In U-14 Division , Lucan lost out to Man O War in a low scoring affair.

In the U-15 Division 5, Lucan suffered a tough loss away to Naomh Barrog on a score line of 3-10 to 1-11. After a strong start from Lucan, Naomh Barrog got more into the game, were physically stronger in the tackle and won lot of turnover ball to run out deserving winners.

Well done to all the teams competing at the weekend.

Adult Hurling Report

Mixed fortunes for our Minor Hurling teams this week-end. The Minor A’s bowed out of the ‘A’ championship after a high-scoring draw with Oliver Plunketts, while the Minor B’s progress to the semi-finals of the ‘D’ championship as group winners after a good win over Sylvesters – see match reports below.

Next weekend, our Seniors play their final league game at home to Cuala, with both teams needing to win to avoid a relegation play-off. Throw in is at 4.30pm on Saturday 20th. Then on Sunday 21st our Junior B’s make the short trip to Commercials for a Championship quarter-final - throw in time tbc. Please support both teams in these crucial encounters.

Minor A Hurling Championship: Lucan Sarsfields 4-21 Oliver Plunketts/ER 4-21.

This score-fest played in beautiful autumn sunshine in AGP ultimately ended in disappointment for Lucan as they exit the Championship. Lucan needed to win by a good margin and hope the result in the other Group game went there way in order to progress to the semi-final. When the other result came through, with about 10 minutes left to play Lucan were 7 points ahead and the quick calculations showed they needed to win by 9. It was Plunketts who finished the stronger however and managed to secure a draw as Lucan’s hopes were dashed.

Lucan had started brightly with an early goal from Andy Carroll setting them on their way. Plunketts fought back well and had closed the gap by the time they had a man sent off 20 minutes into the half. However, the extra man proved little benefit to Lucan as Plunketts finished the half stronger and lead at half-time by 2-15 to 1-12. Lucan faced an uphill task at that stage but they responded to the challenge and played some great hurling early in the second half. A flurry of goals from Ciaran Keane, Any Carroll again and Charlie Keher left them in a strong position to push for the winning margin required. Matt Dunne kept popping over the frees and substitute Oisin O’Brien picked off 3 points from play, and with 10 minutes to go the unlikely target was suddenly attainable. Ordinarily, Lucan would probably have closed out the game at that stage but needing to add to the margin they continued to search for scores and were left a little exposed at the back. And Plunketts took advantage, as they finished strongly scoring two late goals to deny Lucan’s efforts. Their last goal came from a controversial penalty after Lucan keeper Luke Finnerty had blocked two 21 yard free attempts.

This was a very entertaining and high-scoring encounter, with both sets of forwards having the upper hand. Lucan will be disappointed not to progress but overall they acquitted themselves very well in the top level championship with three very competitive performances resulting in two draws and a narrow defeat.

Lucan Team/Scorers:

L Finnerty, D Kelly, G Millea, E Higgins, D Reid, A McNulty, D Kavanagh, C Walsh (0-2), E Connolly, C McHugh, C Behan, A Murphy, C Keane (1-3), A Carroll (2-2), M Dunne (0-11, 0-8f). Subs introduced: C Keher (1-0), O O’Brien (0-3).

Minor D Hurling Championship: Lucan Sarsfields 1-13 St Sylvesters 2-8.

Another determined and gutsy performance from the Minor B Hurlers, saw them overcome Sylvester’s on a score line of 1-13 to 2-8. Cathal Shanahan, after a great run, opened the scoring with a point in the first minute. This was followed within another minute by a Liam O’Connor point. Jake Mooney had to be alert after 5 minutes, with a great save followed by some fancy footwork and a strong clearance. While been totally on top, Lucan lacked composure in front of goal which resulted in nine wides in the first half. The Lucan goal came from another strong run from Captain Shanno as he drove the ball hard and low to the back of the net. A mighty free from Daire Murphy was worth the attendance fee. Daire said afterwards that he was on his own 13m line when he struck it, but I think it was closer to his own 20m line. The sides were level 1-7 apiece at half time. Eoghan settled them down at half time, looked for the same work rate and a bit more focus when striking. The team responded and drove on in the second half. Lucan were also more economical in front of goal with only one wide. Great work rate all over the field but none better than Niall Murray who was solid and assured all day in the full back line. Daire Murphy followed up his first half monster strike with two more long range frees in the second half. Shanno and Fintan won the midfield battle with both making strong runs and layoffs that produced scores. The half forward line of Charlie, Liam and Cormac won a lot of ball. Eoin Power came out to half forward in the second half, and capped off hard work with a lovely point. Liam O’Connor led the attack and was deadly as usual with his frees, ending the match with a tally of 7 points. Daniel Coogan, carrying a foot injury, came on in the second half, caused trouble for the Sylvester backs and scored a nice point just at the finish. Lucan progress as group winners and look forward to a home semi-final.

Lucan Team: Jake Mooney, Sean Egan, Rob Moloney, Niall Murray, Daire Murphy, Mark Gormley, Cian Duffy, Cathal Shanahan, Fintan Ward, Charlie Casely, Liam O’Connor, Cormac Sharkey, Pearse Farrell, Mark Daly, Eoin Power, Daniel Coogan, Adam Smith
