It may have taken 119 years but the victory was all the sweeter as a huge Lucan crowd witnessed the Minor Hurlers take the County ‘A’ Title in a thrilling win over old rivals Ballyboden at O’Toole Park. A massive cheer filled the Crumlin venue as John Bailey, Chairman of the Co. Board, presented the Cup to John McCaffrey, Captain of an excellent Lucan team. Sarsfields are Club Champions in the County that took the Leinster title earlier this year also captained by John McCaffrey. Well done to Niall, John, all the mentors and all who helped make this wonderful day happen. Above all heartiest congratulations and thanks to the entire panel of dedicated hurlers for making the huge breakthrough. Is iontach an gaisce a dhein síbh. Ocáid bródúil do gach ball de Na Sáirséalaigh. Lucans minor hurlers made history in O’Toole Park by being the first hurling team from the club to win an A championship. A fiercely committed team performance saw Lucan hold on for a famous victory over the favourites. However, having elected to play into a gale and a goal down after 40 seconds it looked like it was to be another ‘glorious defeat’. But Lucan knuckled down and pulled back 2 points within minutes. The remainder of the half saw Lucan’s best hurling with goals from Mick May and the ‘Baby-Faced Assassin’, Aidan Roche (1-3) and superb points from Kevin O’Reilly (0-4), Peter Carroll (1-1) and Aaron Doonan (0-1) to see us go in at half-time 1 point up, 2-5 to 2-4. In the second half ‘Boden came storming back, but with Johnny McCaffrey (0-2) playing a true captain’s part, Carroll adding a goal, Roche heaping more misery on the ‘Boden backs and David ‘The Cat’ Quinn defying the laws of nature between the posts, Sarsfields reached the Promised Land or as one man put it, ‘We Crossed the White Line!’ When the final whistle blew after 36 minutes in the second half it was a very special and emotional feeling for all Lucan people present, and everybody involved will treasure the memories for a long time.
